What causes back pain?

Stenosis of the spinal canal

Vertebral stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal, which causes compression of the spinal roots (sometimes the spinal cord) before their exit from the intervertebral foramen, positionally dependent back pain and compression symptoms of the nerve roots.

Sciatica and back pain

Sciatica is pain that spreads along the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is usually caused by compression of the nerve roots of the lumbar spine. The most common causes are disc pathology, osteophytes, narrowing of the spinal canal (stenosis of the spinal canal).

Lumbar radiculopathy and back pain

Lumbar radiculopathy is manifested by a combination of symptoms, including neuropathic pain in the back and lower limb, generated in the lumbar spinal roots.

Pterygoid scapula and back pain

Pterygoid scapula syndrome is a rare cause of musculoskeletal pain in the shoulder and posterior thoracic wall. The pterygoid paralysis caused by the pterygoid scapular syndrome begins as a painless weakness in the muscle with the pathognomonic shape of the scapula developing at the same time.

Cervical and back pain

Cervical-lingual syndrome is a rare condition characterized by pain in the neck with numbness of the ipsilateral half of the tongue, which is strengthened when moving in the upper cervical spine.

Myogenic pain in the back

In modern clinical medicine, two variants of myogenic pain (MB) are identified: myogenic pain with the presence of trigger zones and myogenic pain without trigger zones. If with the first option doctors are more or less familiar ("myofascial pain syndrome" - by the most common terminology), then the second option, as a rule, for most doctors is terra incognita.

Osteochondrosis and back pain

Unfortunately, the term "osteochondrosis" has become firmly established in the practice of Russian doctors, which has become a convenient diagnostic cliche for back pain. It should be recognized that this term was probably justified at a time when neurologists invaded the field of orthopedics (diseases of muscles and joints), creating a doctrine called manual medicine.

Osteoarthritis (osteoarthritis) and back pain

Osteoarthrosis (syn: degenerative joint disease, osteoarthrosis, hypertrophic osteoarthritis, osteoarthritis) is directly related to pain in the neck and back.

Neurogenic arthropathy (neuropathic arthropathy, Charcot joints) and back pain

Neurogenic arthropathy is a rapidly progressive destructive arthropathy, combined with a reduction in the perception of pain and positional sensitivity, which can be the result of various diseases, the most frequent of which are diabetes and stroke.

Fibromyalgia - muscle pain in the back without trigger zones

The syndrome of fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and increased soreness in a multitude of sites called "sensitive points".
