Transplantation

Uterine transplantation

Congenital aplasia (agenesis) of the uterus is often discovered only in adolescence, when a girl goes to see a gynecologist for an examination due to the absence of menstruation.

Skin grafting

Our skin is not only the largest organ, but also a very important one, so injuries and pathologies with serious damage or loss of skin can be life-threatening. Skin transplantation or grafting is the most common way to restore the integrity of the skin.

Transplantation: indications, preparation, technique of transplantation

The first successfully transplanted organ was a kidney (Murray J., Boston, USA, 1954). It was a related transplant: the donor was the identical twin of the recipient, who suffered from chronic renal failure. In 1963, T. Starzl in Denver (USA) initiated clinical liver transplantation, but he achieved real success only in 1967.

Corneal transplantation: procedure, prognosis

The most common indications for corneal transplantation are bullous keratopathy (pseudophakic, Fuchs endothelial dystrophy, aphakic), keratoconus, re-tissue transplantation, keratitis (viral, bacterial, fungal, Acanthamoeba, perforation) and stromal corneal dystrophies.

Tissue transplantation: procedure, prognosis

Skin allografts are used in patients with extensive burns and other conditions with massive loss of skin. Allografts are used to cover large areas of damage and thus reduce the loss of tissue fluid and proteins and prevent the development of invasive infections.

Small bowel transplantation: procedure, prognosis

Small bowel transplantation is indicated for patients with malabsorption syndrome associated with bowel diseases (gastroschisis, Hirschsprung's disease, autoimmune enteritis) or bowel resection (mesenteric thromboembolism or advanced Crohn's disease)

Pancreatic islet cell transplantation: procedure, prognosis

Pancreatic islet transplantation has theoretical advantages over whole organ transplantation: the procedure is less invasive, the islets can be cryopreserved, allowing for optimization of transplantation time.

Pancreas transplantation

Pancreas transplantation is a form of pancreatic β-cell replacement that helps restore normal blood sugar levels - normoglycemia - in diabetics.

Lung transplantation

Lung transplantation is a life-saving option for patients with respiratory failure who are at high risk of death despite optimal medical treatment.

Liver transplantation: procedure, prognosis

Liver transplantation is the second most common solid organ transplant. Indications include liver cirrhosis (70% of transplants in the US, 60-70% of which are associated with hepatitis C); fulminant liver necrosis (about 8%); hepatocellular carcinoma (about 7%).
