Black dots on moles are changes in skin color on the mole itself or on adjacent areas of skin. A person who has many moles hardly pays attention to them. But if a black dot does appear, it is very clearly visible and this change can hardly be compared to a scratch. The reasons for their occurrence can be very different.

A mole can be smooth or raised, and in some cases, it can be easily felt when touched. The color of moles ranges from light brown to dark chocolate. Sometimes black dots may appear on the surface of the mole. From this point on, this spot should be carefully monitored. If it does not begin to lighten and gradually disappear after a couple of days, it is better to consult a doctor to establish an accurate diagnosis.

Causes black dots on the mole

A black dot on a mole may be a consequence of damage or a signal that the mole is gradually degenerating into melanoma. In order not to despair, you need to know several reasons why black dots may appear on a mole:

  • Damage of various kinds. Since a mole can be located anywhere on the human body, it is quite easy to injure it. When damaged, a mole does not turn red like skin, but begins to darken. A mole can be damaged by nails, combing hair with a comb with hard teeth, metal elements in clothing or jewelry. The pain is much stronger than when injuring the skin, but it quickly passes.

If you have injured a mole, observe its appearance for a while.

  • Formation of melanoma or cancerous tumor at the site of a mole. Due to damage, excessive exposure to the sun or other factors, the surface of the mole begins to change externally. If there were no injuries, but black spots appeared on the mole, consult a doctor immediately. Only a good specialist can confirm or refute suspicions of a dangerous disease.

The reasons for the appearance of black dots on a mole are mainly these. But heredity and weak immunity may also play a role. After all, most malignant tumors occur when the immune system is weakened or fails.

Pathogenesis

Every person has moles. They appear in the place where melanin accumulates, which is responsible for tanning. That is why moles appear on the body gradually. They can disappear or, on the contrary, become more distinct.

The pathogenesis of black spots on a mole is the occurrence and development of the disease. In this case, the degeneration of a mole into melanoma will be considered. Most often, this occurs due to excessive exposure of the skin to sunlight.

The pathogenesis of the disease is quite simple: in places where moles appear, there is the highest accumulation of melanin. These cells are the pigment for the skin and hair, so the mole differs from the skin color. UV rays have a detrimental effect on melanin cells, they cannot protect themselves from harmful rays, so they mutate into cancer cells.

It becomes clear why melanomas occur so often in people with fair skin or those who spend most of their time indoors. The skin cannot withstand strong exposure to the sun, a malfunction occurs, and moles are at risk of turning into melanoma. Before spending the whole day on the beach, think about what a tan can "turn out" like. People with fair skin and hair, as well as freckles, should be in direct sunlight for a limited amount of time.

Symptoms black dots on the mole

Symptoms of changes in a mole and its transformation into a cancerous tumor are quite noticeable. If black spots appear on a mole, along with some of the symptoms listed below, consult a doctor immediately.

  • A mole with a black spot begins to itch, and you may feel a slight burning sensation.
  • The hairs around the mole gradually disappear. The neoplasm has a detrimental effect on the hair follicle and destroys it.
  • The color is uneven, like a normal mole. The black spot may appear on the left, right, or center of the mole.
  • The mole with a black spot becomes larger.
  • Cracks may appear on the surface of the mole, from which blood or clear liquid oozes. If such changes continue to be ignored, the mole will turn into a kind of abscess.
  • New small spots that were not there before may form around the affected mole.
  • The skin at the site of the mole's formation becomes denser and harder.

Redness may also appear around the mole. This means that the body is fighting the formation on its own. With timely treatment in this case, the disease can be overcome much faster. The doctor will prescribe a course of treatment aimed at stimulating the immune system.

Black spot on mole - superficial spreading melanoma

Black spots on a mole are divided into several types. Superficial spreading melanoma is considered the most common and widespread form of the disease. It mainly affects middle-aged women, less often men. The disease is complicated by metastases, which can occur in more than half of cases.

The surface of the mole becomes black, dark brown or acquires a bluish tint. At first, the spot is very small, but gradually it begins to grow. From a spot, the mole turns into a small bump on the skin, the edges lose their regular outline. To the touch, the mole becomes dense and hard, and the surface is slightly rough. The color also gradually changes - the skin becomes shiny, a small light area appears in the middle of the spot.

If all these changes do not become a reason for visiting a doctor, then the mole begins to bleed constantly and hurt. Even with the slightest friction or pressure, ichor or yellow liquid mixed with blood begins to flow.

A black spot on a mole constantly brings discomfort and pain. Even during sleep or rest, you need to be careful not to touch the place where the plaque is formed. In a more progressive form, a black spot causes redness of the skin around it and constant discomfort.

A mole with black spots is a Hutchinson freckle

This type of degeneration of a mole into a tumor is the most favorable. The disease develops over a long period of time, sometimes for years. Hutchinson's freckle begins to develop on the most exposed areas of the skin: face, hands, neck, back. A small mole gradually loses its clear outlines, the edges become blurred. The surface begins to darken, and darker-colored inclusions appear.

A mole with black spots is most often observed in older people with pigment spots. Signs of changes become noticeable far from immediately. The positive side of Hutchinson's freckle is that during its slow development, the immune system itself can detect and destroy the cancerous formation.

It is quite easy to determine the disease on your own. Black inclusions appear on the surface of the mole, then a knot forms. The mole begins to bleed or secrete a clear liquid. All this is accompanied by pain and noticeable discomfort. In addition, the mole itself begins to increase in size. The diameter reaches 10 centimeters or more.

Black nodules on a mole - nodular melanoma

This type of melanoma is the most dangerous. The disease develops very quickly. It lasts no more than a year and a half, unlike "Hutchinson's freckle". If immediate action is not taken, the patient may die.

Black nodules on a mole appear quite quickly and are hard to miss. The surface becomes convex. At the slightest touch to the nodule, blood or ichor begins to flow. The surface darkens significantly, acquiring a black, dark brown or bluish color. Ulcers gradually form on the nodule itself.

Not every patient can understand that it is nodular melanoma, because the spot can be of a different color - from pink to red. But the place of formation will certainly hurt and bleed. That is why it is necessary to immediately consult a doctor.

This type of melanoma is considered the most dangerous. Depending on the state of the immune system and the body's resistance, the complication itself also gains speed. The immune system cannot fight this type of disease, as in the previous case, so only surgical treatment is possible.

The mole is covered with black spots - acral lentiginous melanoma

Like nodular melanoma, acral-lentiginous melanoma develops very quickly. It is dangerous because it can occur at the border of the skin and mucous membranes. For example, on the eyelid, near the lips or nostrils. But most often, such melanoma is observed on the nails, feet and hands. People of different ages are susceptible to the disease. But most often the disease is noted in people with dark skin who spend a lot of time under the scorching sun.

This form is the most aggressive, so it develops quickly and noticeably. Black spots appear on the surface of the mole, then ulcers form. If the disease develops on the nail, it gradually destroys it. Ichor or transparent discharge begins to appear.

If your mole is covered with black spots, be sure to monitor it. Especially if these moles are located in the listed places of formation of this type of melanoma. Do not self-medicate, otherwise you can harm the skin around the melanoma and accelerate the process of tumor formation.

Complications and consequences

The consequences of black dots on a mole can be different. If it is a simple injury, then after some time it will completely disappear, leaving no traces on the skin. But if these are signs of an incipient cancerous tumor, it is worth knowing about a number of complications:

  • Possible bleeding at the site of formation. It can occur even with the slightest touch to the melanoma.
  • Rapid formation of metastases. This is the main danger with this disease. You should immediately consult a doctor.
  • Disorders in various organs – kidneys, lungs.
  • Rapid tumor development, possible spread of melanoma nodules over large areas of skin.

Surgery is also necessary. A noticeable scar remains on the skin at the site of the operation. After successful treatment and removal of dangerous melanoma, moles often degenerate into melanomas. Therefore, frequent diagnostics and regular examinations were very important. Patients are limited in their exposure to the sun after surgery. It is imperative to check the condition of the lymph nodes, which are the first to react to a possible disease.

Complications

As with any disease or illness, the formation of black dots on a mole and its development into melanoma can have complications. The main one is metastases. They spread very quickly throughout the body. Melanoma spreads through the bloodstream, metastases can affect any organ, settle in the lungs or brain.

This is why melanoma is so dangerous. If a cancerous tumor of the usual type develops in one organ, then melanoma affects the entire body at once. Complications can appear not only in the body, but also on the surface of the skin. If melanoma has formed in a place where there is constant contact with clothing, then it will secrete ichor, blood or yellowish discharge.

Constant pain, discomfort and an increase in the size of the mole can also be considered complications. If melanoma is diagnosed and operated on in time, the harm to the body will not be as noticeable as in advanced stages.

Some melanomas can grow to large sizes. "Hutchinson's freckle" is very similar to pigment spots in older people. It gradually increases in diameter and is more difficult to remove.

Diagnostics black dots on the mole

If you find a mole with a black spot on your body or a mole that has changed in size and shape for no apparent reason, you should undergo diagnostics. But first, you can independently determine whether the mole is dangerous. Conduct the following diagnostics:

  1. The mole has changed from flat to convex, raised above the skin level. This is quite visible under side lighting.
  2. The mole has started to grow in size. Observe the suspicious mole for a few days. You can measure it with a centimeter or monitor its growth in any other way. A cancerous mole will grow quite quickly.
  3. The edges of the mole are "ragged", irregular. A normal mole has smooth, rounded edges. A "sick" mole has irregular edges.
  4. The mole grows unevenly. One half may noticeably increase in size, while the other half may remain the same shape.
  5. Check the diameter. If the mole has increased in diameter more than the diameter of a ballpoint pen, this is also an alarming signal.
  6. The color of the mole is uneven. Black, brown, gray, bluish, white, pink or red spots appear on the surface.

Diagnosis of melanoma consists of a whole complex of procedures. If you have identified one or several of the listed changes, you will need to go through all the stages of diagnosis to establish an accurate result.

Tests

When you visit a dermatologist, you will certainly receive a referral for a general blood and urine test. They will not give a 100% answer to the question "Do you have a malignant tumor?" First of all, a blood test will show the state of the body and changes in the blood composition. There are several factors that indicate a possible malignant neoplasm:

  • Leukocytosis. The level of leukocytes in the blood is decreased or increased.
  • The leukocyte formula has a shift to the left.
  • Low hemoglobin. Cancer cells deplete blood molecules.
  • Platelets are significantly reduced.
  • ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) is elevated.

A mandatory procedure will be checking coagulation or blood clotting. Cancer cells contribute to the occurrence of micro thrombosis and interfere with the proper circulation of blood in the body. At the first analysis, all these changes will be reflected in the biochemical formula of the blood.

Urine analysis will provide information about how the liver, kidneys, urinary system and protein metabolism work. With different forms of cancer, the composition of urine also changes. It helps to determine whether there is a tumor and what type it is.

Instrumental diagnostics

It is possible to determine whether a mole with a black spot is dangerous or not using different methods and equipment. But the most effective in instrumental diagnostics are considered to be histological examination and a dermatoscope.

Dermatoscope. This is a kind of ordinary microscope that will help determine whether a mole is dangerous. The dermatoscope makes the upper layer of skin, the horny one, transparent. The doctor will be able to see whether the mole is malignant or not.

Histological examination. A mole with a black spot is cut out from the surface of the skin. Then a thorough examination of all tissues located under and near the mole is carried out. This way, a cancerous formation can be identified more accurately.

Other types of instrumental diagnostics include:

  • X-ray image from different angles.
  • Computed tomography.
  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).
  • Ultrasound.
  • Endoscopic examination.

Instrumental diagnostics together with the obtained blood and urine tests will help to determine the presence of a cancerous tumor and the stage of its development as quickly and accurately as possible.

What do need to examine?

How to examine?

Differential diagnosis

The exclusion method can also be used to determine whether a black dot on a mole is dangerous or not. It is necessary to conduct a series of studies and take tests in order to gradually exclude all possible diseases and leave only one.

Melanoma is often confused with pigment spots. Most often, a biopsy is used. This method involves collecting cells or tissue from the site of the neoplasm. A biopsy will help determine whether it is a pigment spot or not. You can initially independently determine a pigment spot by several signs:

  1. Correct form.
  2. Smooth edges.
  3. Uniform color.

But to determine a cancerous mole, you can remember the signs according to the UDAR formula (accelerated growth, diameter more than 6 mm, asymmetry, multi-colored).

The task of differential diagnostics is to accurately confirm the suspected diagnosis. This will help prescribe treatment and direct all efforts to a specific disease. Sometimes there are cases of incorrect treatment, which can lead to negative consequences.

Treatment black dots on the mole

There are different ways to remove a mole with black dots. Medicine offers many options that are more or less painful. A mole with an even dot can also be removed at home. Among the most common methods for removing a mole are:

  • Laser removal. A dermatologist uses a laser beam to affect tissue and destroy it. This method is as painful as others. Therefore, an anesthetic injection is required. Many patients imagine this procedure as the easiest, fastest and most cosmetic method. But the laser also leaves scars on the skin.
  • Electrocoagulation or exposure to low-frequency current. The procedure is painful, it resembles burning, which was popular a couple of decades ago. Scars remain on the skin.
  • Ointment. A special ointment is applied to the mole, which cauterizes it. The result is very difficult to determine, because it is impossible to say how deeply the medicine has acted and whether it has completely destroyed the mole.
  • Biopsy. This is the removal of a mole and adjacent tissue within a radius of 2-3 cm around it.

Medicines

If the mole does not develop into a malignant tumor, it can be safely removed. But first of all, you should decide whether you need a scar or not. If the mole is located in a visible place, then it is better to try to avoid a scar. To do this, you can try to remove it using non-surgical methods. Many available methods leave behind a noticeable scar, which must be additionally treated.

Pharmacies offer a huge list of drugs that can quickly and painlessly remove moles of any size. But in folk medicine there are also many ways to get rid of them. Advantages and disadvantages of removing moles with drugs:

  • An expensive medicine or drug may not be right for you.
  • May cause allergies if they contain chemical components.
  • If a mole degenerates into a malignant tumor, an unsuccessfully chosen drug can only speed up the process.
  • The drug from the pharmacy has undergone thorough testing and is safe for the body as a whole.
  • No special efforts or time expenditure are required for treatment.
  • Most often there are no scars left.

We can recommend such drugs as Foresol (applied once or several times), Viferon (can be used during lactation, synthetic agent), Isoprinosine (tablets, have a fairly quick effect), Paneavir gel (penetrates deep into the skin).

Traditional methods also have their pros and cons:

  • The effect of the chosen method is unknown. The drug has not been tested in laboratories, so there is no guarantee that it is safe.
  • It is difficult to calculate the dosage.
  • The speed of action is significantly lower than that of pharmaceutical drugs.
  • Most often, folk remedies consist of accessible, harmless components.

Folk remedies

Garlic and lemon juice. The mole is lubricated with garlic juice, and then immediately with lemon juice. A small mole disappears in about a week. The remedy is absolutely safe and harmless. If you are not allergic to these components, then this method can be considered ideal. It does not cause irritation, no side effects.

Egg yolk and pumpkin seeds. This is one of the oldest methods of removing unwanted moles. Mix 7 hard-boiled yolks, 5 tablespoons of dry pumpkin seeds and 5 tablespoons of flour and pour in 0.5 liters of vegetable oil. The resulting mixture is infused in a water bath for 30 minutes. Pour into a glass jar and store in the refrigerator.

The remedy is taken for 5 days in the morning on an empty stomach, one spoon at a time. Then you need to take a break and repeat the course. The medicine is taken until it runs out.

Paste of baking soda and castor oil. Mix baking soda and oil in equal parts to make a cream. Not watery and not dry. Apply it daily to the mole for several hours. You can also apply it before going to bed and leave it on overnight.

Ointment from chalk and linseed oil. Make a paste from crushed chalk and linseed oil, mixing the components in equal parts. Apply to the mole for a couple of hours or overnight.

Herbal treatment

Celandine. You will need fresh celandine stems. Apply the juice of the plant to the mole, pressing the cut of the stem to it. This will result in a kind of cauterization of the unwanted growth on the body. It is advisable to lubricate the mole with celandine juice no more than 3 times a day. To speed up the removal process, tie it with a thread at the base. As it dries, the thread should also be tightened a little.

If you do everything carefully and correctly, the mole will disappear in about a month. There will be practically no traces left on the skin, and the procedure itself will be painless. You also do not need to smear the mole with juice too often or tighten the thread too much. This can cause allergies and bleeding.

Dandelion and nettle. Make a paste from the dandelion root and apply it to the mole. Keep the compress on for a couple of hours. Make a decoction from stinging nettle. Boil 2 tablespoons of dry nettle and 12 tablespoons of water over low heat for 10 minutes. Then let it cool and strain. Take half a glass 4 times a day before meals.

Lemon and apple cider vinegar. Chop the lemon together with the peel. Mix 100 grams of vinegar and 100 grams of lemon and leave in a dark place for 7 days. Then strain and apply the resulting liquid to the mole in the morning and evening.

Onion. Apply fresh onion juice twice a day. If you do this regularly, the mole will gradually dry up and disappear.

Surgical treatment

Surgical treatment of benign and malignant moles differs slightly from each other. Moles that are not dangerous to humans can be removed at any medical center without additional examinations. It is necessary to check the depth of the mole root. The surgeon removes the mole with a scalpel. When removing, an area of skin around it is captured. But the area of capture is very small - from 0.2 to 0.5 cm. The resulting wound resembles a cone. The edges of the wound are pulled together and stitched. The surgeon applies a cosmetic suture, which after a while becomes completely invisible.

If doctors have diagnosed you with a malignant mole, a biopsy is prescribed. This is approximately the same operation, but first blood and urine samples are taken to check for infections and cancer cells. It is necessary to determine the nature of the degeneration, the depth of the lesion, the presence or absence of metastases, and the damage to adjacent tissues. During a biopsy, a larger area of skin around the mole can be removed - up to 5 cm. The edges are also pulled together and stitched. The scar is more pronounced, and it takes longer to heal.

During surgical treatment, anesthesia is required, since any place on the human body where a mole is located is more sensitive. It is recommended to contact only specialized clinics that have the necessary tools and equipment. If the operation is unsuccessful, the mole may become inflamed, there is a risk of infection.

Prevention

To avoid the degeneration of a mole with black dots into a cancerous tumor or to prevent secondary formation, follow these simple rules:

  1. Avoid direct sunlight. The sun is good for the skin only in the morning and evening hours. The rest of the time it carries solar radiation to the skin.
  2. Be sure to wear headwear. This should be a hat or a Panama with wide brims made of impermeable, dense material. It will protect the skin of the head, face, ears and neck. A small hat does not protect from the sun, but only covers the head from sunstroke.
  3. Sunglasses. Choose those with very dark lenses. They will protect your eyes, eyelids, and the skin around your eyes.
  4. On a sunny day, you need to choose clothes that cover your body as much as possible. For men, the best option is a long-sleeved shirt and linen trousers. Women can wear a long dress, a sundress, a skirt and a long-sleeved blouse. Natural materials do not let in sunlight, but at the same time do not prevent air from penetrating.
  5. Protect your skin with special creams and your lips with hygienic lipstick.
  6. During midday hours, when the sun is especially active, stay in the shade. Don't count on small clouds in the sky. The sun passes through them and has a detrimental effect on sunbathers.
  7. Visiting a solarium is strictly prohibited. Excessive exposure to artificial sun or poor quality equipment also very often leads to the formation of melanomas.
  8. Keep an eye on your moles. If you have a lot of them, make a visit to a dermatologist a regular one.

Forecast

The prognosis of black dots on a mole depends on the stage at which its transformation into a malignant formation is detected. If a cancerous formation is detected at the first stage, then the prognosis is very good. If the formation is neglected, then the prognosis is not so positive.

Most patients notice changes in the mole already at the first stage and consult a doctor in time. After treatment, many patients recover completely. The prognosis depends on whether the lymph nodes are affected or not, the degree of metastasis and the stage of development (there are only four of them).

Scientists have noted that melanoma or malignant tumors are more common in people with dark skin or, conversely, in people with very light skin, light hair and freckles. Women recover faster than men, and treatment results become noticeable earlier.

As with any oncology, the prognosis for the tumor is as follows: regular examination and diagnosis of moles on the body, removal of suspicious formations, limiting exposure to the sun, maximum protection from direct rays in the warm season.
