Thrush is a very common infectious disease caused by a yeast-like fungus of the genus Candida. Along with drug therapy, gynecologists often practice douching for thrush: as practice shows, this method is very effective in combating fungal infection.

We will talk about how and what to douche with in this article.

Treatment of thrush with douching

Treating thrush with douching – washing the vagina with a certain liquid – is a very common treatment method. However, it cannot be used by everyone.

It is not recommended to use douching:

  • women in menopause due to excessive dryness of the vaginal walls;
  • during pregnancy, as there is a risk of infection from the expectant mother to the baby;
  • during menstrual bleeding due to the risk of deeper penetration of microbes;
  • the first month after an abortion or the birth of a child (during this period, the genitals are more vulnerable to infection);
  • before going to the gynecologist (this may make it difficult to diagnose your disease).

Before you begin using douching, you should consult with your doctor and discuss your specific medical condition.

If you want to douche yourself, carefully read the instructions on the packaging with the ready-made solutions.

If you want to use a homemade folk remedy, then cool it down to a warm state (not hot!) immediately before douching.

Self-treatment with douching carries a certain risk of spreading the infection further, making it more difficult to treat in the future.

The best option for treating thrush is to use drug therapy prescribed by a doctor, in combination with douching.

How to douche for thrush?

It is advisable to start douching procedures with 2 times a day (after waking up and before going to bed), then gradually move to once a day, then every other day until you completely abandon the procedure. The optimal number of procedures is 8-10.

In hospital conditions, the procedure is carried out using an Esmarch mug: such douching is more effective, but at home, using such a device is somewhat difficult. Therefore, either visit a gynecologist to perform the procedure, or do it at home, using a regular syringe - a rubber bulb with a removable tip.

It is forbidden to use a bulb for douching that was previously used for enemas: if you do not have another one, you will have to buy a new one. The tip of the syringe must be disinfected before use: for example, boiled or treated with an antiseptic.

Fill the bulb with the prepared solution, lie down on your back in the bathtub, placing your feet on the edges of the bathtub. The procedure can also be performed while sitting, leaning slightly forward, but this position is slightly less effective. The tip should be inserted as carefully as possible so as not to affect the mucous membrane. Relax and begin a gradual, non-aggressive introduction of the solution. The duration of one procedure is about 10 minutes. The optimal amount of solution introduced is from 200 to 300 ml. After douching, it is recommended to lie down for 15-20 minutes.

If the symptoms of thrush do not disappear after 7 days from the start of douching procedures, it is necessary to consult a doctor. Perhaps thrush was present in the vagina against the background of some other infection, or the treatment was carried out incorrectly.

Douching during pregnancy for thrush

Most doctors are of the opinion that douching during pregnancy for thrush should not be done. There may be several reasons for this:

  • there is a risk of air entering through the cervix during douching;
  • the infection may spread from the vagina to the fetus, which threatens damage to the fetal membrane;
  • During the procedure, the normal flora of the vaginal environment can be washed out, which significantly weakens local vaginal immunity. As a result, a secondary infection develops.

If you still decide to use douching during pregnancy for thrush, consult a gynecologist, choose an effective and harmless solution for the procedures together and try to follow the doctor's recommendations exactly. Perform the procedure slowly and with minimal pressure on the bulb. The course of douching during pregnancy is no more than 5 days.

Douching products for thrush

As a rule, for douching with thrush, astringent and anti-inflammatory solutions and liquids are used, which are sold in pharmacies or prepared independently at home.

Among folk remedies, herbs are especially popular: chamomile, St. John's wort, oak bark, succession, calendula, water lily. Pharmaceutical preparations also produce a good effect. Among them are hydrogen peroxide, furacilin, potassium permanganate, boric acid. Among home remedies, good reviews were received about baking soda, saline solution.

Douching with soda for thrush is probably the most common. This procedure is used for vaginal dysbacteriosis, candidiasis, and even to increase a woman's chances of getting pregnant. To prepare a soda solution, we take half a teaspoon of baking soda and dilute it in 200-300 ml of water. The water for the solution must be boiled and warm, but not hot. The procedure is practiced 1-2 times a day for a week, but no more, otherwise you can cause great harm to the vaginal microflora, washing away the natural protective barrier on the mucous membrane.

Douching with hydrogen peroxide for thrush is not such a common, but no less effective method. Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful antioxidant that destroys almost all known types of pathogenic bacteria, including viral and fungal infections. Such a solution inhibits the viability of anaerobic microorganisms living inside the vagina, which significantly alleviates the general condition during the disease. In order to prepare the liquid for the procedure, mix a tablespoon of peroxide and 0.5 liters of water (warm and boiled) and douche. If there was heavy discharge during the fungal infection, the procedure helps almost immediately. However, if you are not sure of the cause of the discharge, you should not use the method without first consulting a gynecologist.

Douching with chlorhexidine for thrush can only be done with symptoms of irritation of the mucous membrane due to thrush, as well as with vaginitis, erosion and some venereal infectious diseases. Chlorhexidine does not actually act on fungal infections and viruses, so this remedy does not directly stop the cause of vaginal candidiasis. For douching, use a 0.02% solution of chlorhexidine, 200 ml is enough for one procedure.

Douching with potassium permanganate for thrush is effective due to the antiseptic (disinfecting) property of the drug. When preparing the solution, it is extremely important to observe the dosage: too concentrated a solution of potassium permanganate can negatively affect the mucous membrane and lead to irreparable consequences. The same applies to a poorly filtered solution with grains of the drug. A properly prepared solution for douching should be light pink and transparent, but in no case dark. Do not douche with potassium permanganate too often: you can dry out the mucous membrane.

Douching with boric acid for thrush is not recommended for pregnant and lactating women, as well as those who have kidney disease. Everyone else can use boric acid in two ways:

  • buy special vaginal capsules with a boric acid solution in a pharmacy and use them according to the instructions for the drug;
  • Prepare a solution from a glass of boiled water and 1 teaspoon of boric acid powder. Perform the procedure 1-2 times a day.

Douching with furacilin for thrush will not rid you of the fungal infection, but it will ease the condition, relieve itching and temporarily stop the discharge. To prepare the solution, take 1-2 furacilin tablets, grind them to a powder state (so that they dissolve better) and add to 200 ml of warm boiled water. After dissolving the furacilin, it is advisable to filter the solution, getting rid of undissolved particles. Douching with the solution is carried out as usual.

Douching with kefir for thrush is a rather risky method of therapy from the point of view of official medicine. Of the numerous myths about the benefits of kefir for douching for thrush, the only truth is that kefir contains lactobacilli that are beneficial for the vaginal flora. However, in addition to them, kefir also contains a lot of other microorganisms and substances that have a far from positive effect on the mucous membrane. Thus, you can not only fail to cure, but also aggravate the situation. To improve the composition of the microflora, kefir is best consumed internally, but not as a douche.

Douching with salt for thrush helps relieve inflammation symptoms, but, unfortunately, salt does not affect fungal infections. Therefore, it is advisable to combine douching with salt for thrush with other antifungal agents, both systemic and local. Usually, sea salt or, in extreme cases, table salt is used. Dilute a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm boiled water and use for douching. Make sure that there are no large salt crystals in the solution: if there are any, the liquid must be filtered. To enhance the effect, you can add soda to the douching liquid in the amount of 0.5 teaspoon per glass of water.

Vinegar douching for thrush helps restore the natural level of the vaginal environment. To prepare a vinegar solution for douching, dilute 2 tablespoons of vinegar (preferably apple cider vinegar) in 1 liter of boiled water at room temperature. This solution will not actually destroy the fungi, but it will slow down their development a little.

Douching with chlorophyllipt for thrush is an excellent way to relieve inflammation and cope with foreign bacteria. For this purpose, use an alcohol solution of chlorophyllipt, which can be purchased at a pharmacy. To prepare a liquid for douching, take 1 tablespoon of the drug and mix it with 1 liter of boiled water. You can use this liquid not only for douching, but also for treating the external genitalia.

Serum douching for thrush is done to counteract the development of symptoms of the disease. For the procedures, we use freshly prepared serum from goat's milk. Bring half a liter of fresh (!) serum to a boil (do not boil) and cool to a warm state. Douching is done in the morning and evening for 10 days. Before each procedure, a fresh portion of serum should be prepared. Serum douching restores and renews the vaginal microflora, eliminates putrefactive processes. Before using the procedure, a consultation with a gynecologist is required.

Douching with herbs for thrush

Often, women prefer medicinal herbs in the treatment of thrush: very effective decoctions and infusions are prepared from them. A positive effect is observed after using chamomile, yellow water lily, St. John's wort, calendula, yarrow. Such herbs can be prepared separately or as a mixture of herbs, which increases the effectiveness of the treatment.

Calendula douching for thrush is used quite often and very successfully. Calendula has a powerful bactericidal property, has a detrimental effect on fungal infections, and also helps restore tissue damaged by the inflammatory process. To prepare the infusion, put 2 tablespoons of dried calendula flowers in a container, add a glass of hot water, cover with a lid and keep in a water bath for 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Cool for 45 minutes, filter. Add boiled water to the prepared medicine to the original volume (one glass). The infusion can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Douche 1-2 times a day, preferably at night, until the symptoms disappear completely.

Douching with chamomile for thrush is done for anti-inflammatory and wound-healing purposes. Chamomile does not actually affect fungal infections, so it is recommended to combine it with calendula and yarrow for a more pronounced and lasting antiseptic effect. Chamomile relieves signs of inflammation well, soothes and heals damaged mucous membranes, eliminates itching, as well as swelling and pain caused by an inflammatory reaction. To prepare a solution for douching, place 4 tablespoons of dried chamomile in a container, add a glass of boiled water, cover with a lid and keep in a water bath for up to half an hour, then cool for 10 minutes and squeeze out. Add boiled water to 200 ml and carry out douching procedures. In addition to dry chamomile raw materials, you can buy a ready-made special solution from this plant in a pharmacy - romazulan. For douching, dilute 1 ½ tablespoons of this solution in 1 liter of warm boiled water and use as usual. Romazulan, in addition to chamomile extract, contains essential chamomile oil, which provides effective relief of the inflammatory process and relief of the main symptoms of irritation of the vaginal mucosa.

Douching with oak bark for thrush is due to the astringent, anti-inflammatory and anti-putrefactive properties of the herbal preparation. When the oak bark solution gets on the mucous membrane, the tannin substance interacts with proteins, which leads to the formation of a protective film that protects the vaginal walls from further irritation. This property allows you to slow down the inflammatory process and relieve discomfort in the vagina. The presence of tannins in the preparation promotes the denaturation of protoplasmic proteins of pathogenic bacteria, which provokes a delay in their development and death. To prepare a decoction, 2 tablespoons of oak bark are enough, which we put in a container, add a glass of hot water and cook in a water bath for about half an hour, cool to a warm state, filter, dilute a little with boiled water and use for douching.

Douching with celandine for thrush is a very effective procedure. Celandine has a wide range of antibacterial activity: it destroys gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, yeast-like fungal infections and trichomonads. The plant should not be used by people suffering from bronchial asthma, epilepsy, and cardiac disorders. To prepare a liquid for douching, pour 1 tablespoon of dry crushed plant into a container with 200 ml of water, heat in a water bath for 15 minutes, cool and use. It is advisable to prepare a fresh solution for each douching procedure, although the prepared one can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Douching with miramistin for thrush

Miramistin is an antiseptic drug that

It has a destructive effect on all representatives of gram-positive and gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, including microbial groups resistant to antibiotic therapy. In addition, miramistin destroys bacteria that cause the development of sexually transmitted diseases (Trichomonas, gonococcus, chlamydia, treponema, etc.), fungal infections (yeast-like fungus, dermatophyte, ascomycete) and viruses.

Miramistin solution is used to wash the external genitals and vagina, to moisten tampons for intravaginal insertion. Sometimes women practice vaginal douching using 5-10 ml of Miramistin. The duration of treatment is 5-10 procedures. Douching is used for vaginal candidiasis, to restore damaged microflora in the vagina, and to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. In the latter case, the procedure should be performed no later than 2 hours after sexual contact.

Sometimes, immediately after using the drug, a tingling sensation may be observed, which disappears on its own within a minute. This is considered normal and does not require cancellation of the procedures.

Miramistin can be used to treat thrush in pregnant and lactating women, as numerous studies have not revealed any negative impact on either the course of pregnancy or the unborn child.

Douching with citeal for thrush

The use of the medicinal antiseptic Citeal in the treatment of thrush is due to three active components of the drug: chlorhexidine, hexamidine and chlorocresol. These substances are known for their pronounced fungicidal, bacteriostatic and antitrichomonal properties. The complex action of the drug allows you to destroy all types of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, as well as fungi and herpes simplex viruses.

After a single douching, the bactericidal effect of the drug lasts for 18 hours, without causing irritation of the mucous membranes or disruption of the natural pH of the vaginal environment.

Before the douching procedure, Citeal is diluted with clean boiled water in a ratio of 1:10. The last injection with a syringe should preferably be done with clean water to wash away the remains of Citeal. The duration of the therapeutic course and the frequency of procedures are determined by the doctor in each specific case.

Use the product only if you are sure that you are not allergic to the components of the antiseptic. Pregnant and lactating women are not prohibited from using the product.

Douching with Malavit for Thrush

Malavit is a popular and effective herbal remedy that can be purchased in pharmacies. The drug eliminates itching and unpleasant odor, relieves pain and swelling, destroys aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. For thrush, Malavit is recommended to be used in combination with other antifungal agents: in such cases, the effect of the drug will be maximally positive.

To prepare a solution for douching, Malavit must be diluted in the following proportion: 15 ml of Malavit and 300 ml of boiled water. The duration of treatment can be from 5 to 10 days.

As a further prevention of thrush and other inflammatory diseases of the external genitalia, it is recommended to add the preparation while taking a bath. In such cases, 10 ml of Malavit is used per 180-200 liters of water.

The drug is approved for external use during pregnancy, if there is no allergic reaction to the components of the product. The composition of the drug is represented by herbal extracts (chamomile, calendula, elecampane, echinacea, sage, yarrow, wormwood, calamus, etc.), stone oil, fir and cedar resin, extracts from pine and birch buds. Malavit also contains mumiyo, healing mountain dew, glycerin and structured spring water. The drug does not contain dyes, preservatives or alcohol, so Malavit has virtually no contraindications or side effects.

Douching with iodine for thrush

Iodine is a good remedy for inflammatory and other skin diseases. However, undiluted iodine cannot be used to treat thrush, as it has an extremely negative effect on the mucous membrane.

Iodine can be added in small quantities to an aqueous solution for douching, for example, as in the following recipes:

  • take one teaspoon of baking soda and iodine solution, dilute in 1 liter of boiled water. Take a sitz bath or douche once a day until the symptoms of thrush disappear;
  • take 1 liter of boiling water and add 2 tablespoons of sea or table salt, boil for three minutes. Cool to body temperature, add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 10 drops of iodine tincture. Douche with the resulting mixture twice a day for 5 days.

It is certainly possible to cure thrush at home, but for your own safety and to obtain a positive effect from the treatment, it is advisable to consult a good doctor. Based on the examinations and the established diagnosis, the specialist will advise you exactly the douching for thrush that will be effective in your particular case.
