Today is International Friendship Day
Last reviewed: 01.07.2025
International Day of Friendship is one of the youngest holidays in the calendar. The decision to hold it was made by the UN General Assembly on April 27, 2011, at its 65th session. The ideological basis for the new date was the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace and the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Benefit of the Whole Planet (it covered 2001–2010).
The United Nations has proposed that government agencies, as well as international and regional organizations, celebrate this day in accordance with the cultural traditions of a particular country. The UN resolution particularly emphasizes the importance of the new date in strengthening friendly relations between different nations. “Friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire efforts to ensure peace and provides an opportunity to build bridges between societies that honor cultural diversity,” the document says.
In addition, one of the goals of International Friendship Day is to involve young people, including future leaders, in public activities aimed at respectful perception of different cultures.
Nowadays, many countries around the world hold annual events related to the promotion of friendship. From now on, the Friendship Day program will be added to their list.
