Ancient Tai Chi gymnastics helps improve memory
Last reviewed: 01.07.2025

Scientists from the University of South Florida and Fudan University in Shanghai have found increased brain volume and improved performance on memory and thinking tests in elderly Chinese who practice the ancient Tai Chi exercise three times a week, Medical Xpress reports.
Experts conducted an 8-month randomized controlled trial, during which they compared people who practiced Tai Chi with those who did not do anything similar. The observation showed an increase in brain volume and cognitive improvements in the group that took part in lively discussions three times a week. In the other group, a decrease in brain volume was observed, which over time can cause dementia in people aged 60-70 years.
Previous studies have found increased brain volume in people who did aerobic exercise, and one study also found improved memory.
"Being able to reverse the trend of brain decline through exercise and increased mental activity may help delay the onset of dementia in older adults," said study author Dr. James Mortimer, a professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of South Florida College of Public Health.
The study examined whether regular physical and mental activity could help prevent Alzheimer's disease. "Epidemiological studies have repeatedly shown that people who exercise and are socially active have a low risk of developing Alzheimer's disease in old age," Mortimer said.
Regular practice of ancient Chinese gymnastics eliminates blood stagnation, has a positive effect on the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, improves metabolism, strengthens psychological balance, and relieves stress.
