Home care depends on the cause of your leg pain. For sprains and strains of the leg muscles or ligaments, the initial recommendation is to apply ice, with 15 to 20 minutes between each. Ibuprofen (Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be used to control pain. Although over-the-counter medications are generally unsafe to take because they may interact improperly with other medications you are taking with a prescription. Be sure to consult your doctor before attempting home treatment.

How to treat leg pain at home?

Treatment for leg pain depends on the diagnosis. Once the cause of the pain is identified, treatment is aimed at managing and controlling the pain, as well as preventing future pain or recurrence.

Tendon and calf muscle injuries are usually treated by forcing the body to produce collagen fibers. These will help produce scar tissue in the area of muscle damage. Depending on the severity of the damage, it may take several days or weeks for the leg to fully heal after an injury.

In the initial stage of leg recovery, it is important that the muscles are restored in length. That is, they should be able to bend and straighten. To do this, stretching exercises are used to help restore the work of the hamstring muscles along their entire length, so that the full range of motion of the knee joint is restored. The decision about when to begin these exercises or use other types of physical therapy is individual for each patient. A doctor can help with this.

Crutches for leg pain

Crutches may be used for the first few days after the injury to rest the leg. Elastic bandages (or wraps) may be applied to the thigh, starting at the knee and moving up to the hip joint, to provide compression. Ibuprofen may be suggested for anti-inflammatory and pain relief. As with any medication, it is important to consult a pharmacist or orthopedic surgeon to ensure that ibuprofen is safe to take in your particular situation.

Sciatic pain

People with sciatic pain after a leg injury should consider a short period of bed rest (usually less than 24 hours) before getting up and doing leg exercises. Ice and heat applications may be helpful, and acetaminophen and ibuprofen may be used in conjunction with physical therapy.

If leg pain is associated with spinal problems, it may mean that the spinal cord is at risk of permanent damage and emergency medical care should be provided immediately.

Leg pain in chronic diseases

For patients with chronic conditions (such as diabetes), injury prevention is often the best treatment. Leg pain in patients with diabetes is very difficult to manage; a normal daily routine and feasible physical activity are needed.

In addition, it is important to control high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and the development of diabetes. Controlling these conditions, as well as quitting smoking, will help minimize the risk of peripheral vascular disease in the legs.

Most conditions that cause leg pain develop slowly, the patient often does not know what and how to treat, and home care for the legs should be individual for each patient.

Your doctor is an important person for you who will help you make the right diagnosis and advise you on how to care for your feet at home if pain occurs.

If there is acute pain with swelling of the legs or loss of sensitivity, while the legs are very cold, there is numbness in them, medical assistance should be provided immediately. Do not limit yourself to home treatment.

Folk remedies for leg pain

Steam baths and massage once a week are very helpful in eliminating leg pain.

Take 10-15 grams of camphor and 200-250 grams of mustard oil and mix in a glass bottle and keep this bottle in the sun until the camphor dissolves properly. Massage the affected area every day, this is one of the best home remedies for leg pain.

Proper nutrition - 4-5 walnuts a day is a very good remedy for relieving leg pain in a short period of time.

Taking fish oil helps in treating all types of leg pain and removes general weakness of the body.

When to Seek Medical Care for Leg Pain

People often hesitate to seek medical attention after an injury based on their ability to stand, bear weight with their legs, and most importantly, walk. This is reasonable, but if there is concern that a bone is broken or if there is significant joint swelling following a leg injury, medical attention should be sought urgently. One important reminder: just because a leg can move does not mean it is not injured.

In most other situations, leg pain increases gradually, and patients seek medical attention only when the pain begins to interfere with their daily lives. Often, leg pain is part of many symptoms that are difficult to assess separately without the help of an orthopedic or traumatologist.

Sudden pain

If leg pain starts suddenly, it should be a cause for concern, and medical help is needed urgently. This is especially important if the leg is hot, swollen, or if deep vein thrombosis is diagnosed. It is also worth calling a doctor immediately if the leg is pale and cool, or if there is a risk of developing blood clots in the veins and arteries.

If pain occurs simultaneously in the back and legs with episodes of increasing muscle weakness, after a fall, if there are changes in the functioning of the intestines and bladder, this may indicate an emergency situation of the spinal cord, which may be damaged, and then medical assistance should be provided immediately.

Moderate leg pain can be cured by a simple massage with ointment, while persistent pain requires professional consultation with a traumatologist, physiotherapy and even surgery. The degree of damage to the legs and muscle tissue determines the type of treatment. Back and leg pain can be combined due to excess body weight. Then the legs bear increased load and very often get sick.

Leg pain during pregnancy

Leg pain can occur during pregnancy due to overuse of the abdominal muscles, which leads to lower back pain and pelvic tension. This pain can be mild or sharp. Some home remedies include simply resting the muscles without using medication, especially if the muscle pain goes away after such rest. However, a dislocated disc in the lower back also causes severe back and leg pain. Treatment for such complications requires surgical intervention by qualified doctors. It is very important to call an ambulance at such times.

Symptoms that require immediate attention

Some symptoms that require immediate medical attention include: change in skin color in the affected part of the leg, sharp and constant pain, fever, moments when the leg or back is immobilized.

Depending on the cause of your foot pain, the need for further care after home treatment may be minimal if it is due to an injury. But foot care and pain control may be lifelong if it is due to a chronic condition such as diabetes or arterial disease.
