Release form
Gabantin 50 is supplied in capsule form. Each capsule contains 50 mg of the active substance – gabapentin. The package contains 30 capsules.
Pharmacodynamics
Gabantin 50 is an antiepileptic drug that acts as an inhibitory mediator in the central nervous system. It is believed that the principle of action of the main substance (gebapentin) has some differences from other anticonvulsants that act through the connection between neurons (or neuron and cell).
Studies show that gabapentin leads to the formation of a new molecular binding site in brain tissue, particularly in the hippocampus and cortex, which may be related to the anticonvulsant effect of the drug (the studies were conducted in vitro, i.e. outside a living organism).
There is no binding of the active substance of the drug to other neurotransmitter receptors and drugs in the brain.
To date, the definitive mechanism of action of gabapentin has not been elucidated.
Pharmacokinetics
Gabantin 50 is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Absolute concentration of the active substance in the blood is observed 2-3 hours after administration. The pharmacokinetics of gabapentin is not affected by simultaneous food intake (including fatty food).
Gabapentin does not bind to blood proteins.
The drug is excreted only with urine. No signs of chemical transformation of the drug in the human body have been identified. Complete excretion of the drug occurs in 5-7 hours, regardless of the dosage.
In children (over 12 years of age), plasma concentrations do not differ from adult levels.
With the extrarenal method of blood purification, the drug is completely removed from the blood.
The rate of cleansing the body in old age and with impaired kidney function is reduced.
Dosing and administration
Gabantin 50 is taken orally, regardless of food intake.
For epilepsy, children over 12 years of age and adults are usually prescribed 6 tablets per day. The dosage of the drug is increased by 300 mg every day to achieve the desired therapeutic effect.
The optimal dosage is 300-600 mg three times a day (900-1800 mg per day). For some patients, the dosage is increased to 3600 mg per day. The interval between doses should not exceed 12 hours.
For children aged 8 to 12 years, 10-15 mg per 1 kg of body weight per day is prescribed.
The optimal dosage is 25-30 mg per 1 kg of body weight per day (the daily dose should be divided into three doses). The dosage is increased over three days.
Treatment may also be prescribed according to a different regimen:
- Weight from 26 to 36 kg – 300 mg three times a day.
- Weight from 37 to 50 kg – 400 mg three times a day.
- Weight from 51 to 72 kg – 600 mg three times a day.
For neuropathic pain, 300 mg per day is prescribed, with the dosage increased by 300 mg each day until the desired therapeutic effect is achieved.
The maximum daily dose should not exceed 3600 mg per day (the interval between taking the drug should not exceed 12 hours).
In case of kidney dysfunction, the dosage depends on the creatinine level:
- more than 60 ml/min – 300 mg three times a day
- from 30 to 60 ml/min – 300 mg every other day
Patients undergoing extrarenal blood purification are prescribed 300 mg of the drug every 4 hours of purification.
Use Gabantine 50 during pregnancy
There are no comprehensive studies on the use of Gabantin 50 in pregnant women.
When prescribing a drug to a pregnant woman, a specialist evaluates the expected therapeutic effect of the drug and the possible risk to the fetus.
When taking Gabantin 50, penetration of the active substance into breast milk is observed. The effect of gabapentin on the newborn has not been established.
Side effects Gabantine 50
Gabantin 50 causes fatigue, dizziness, tremors, excessive nervous excitement, depressive states, feelings of anxiety, hostility, headaches, drowsiness.
Possible abdominal pain, problems with stool, dry mouth, inflammation of the pancreas, vomiting.
In rare cases, urinary incontinence, swelling, inflammation of the sebaceous glands, darkening of tooth enamel, blood glucose surges (in diabetes), capillary hemorrhages, fever, tinnitus, and allergic reactions develop.
Interactions with other drugs
The probability of interaction of Gabantin 50 with other drugs is extremely low. It is allowed to take the drug simultaneously with other drugs for the treatment of epilepsy.
The active substance of the drug does not affect oral contraceptives containing ethinyl estradiol or norethindrone.
A decrease in the bioavailability of the active substance is observed with the simultaneous use of drugs for the treatment of heartburn and acid-dependent gastrointestinal diseases. In this case, it is better to take Gabantin 50 two hours after taking antacid drugs.
Storage conditions
Gabantin 50 should be stored in a place protected from light, the storage temperature should not exceed 25 0 C. Keep out of reach of children.
