Ascoril for adult cough
Medical expert of the article
Last reviewed: 04.07.2025

Although a productive cough is easier to bear than a dry one, it will still pass faster if the body is helped to remove the mucus formed in the bronchi, relieve their spasm, and fight the respiratory tract infection. The combined drug Ascoril successfully copes with this task. [ 1 ]

Indications Ascoril for coughing
Ascoril is used for wet cough with various mechanisms of pathology development (viral, bacteriological, allergic) [ 2 ]. These may be the following diseases and infections of the lower respiratory tract:
- bronchitis;
- tracheobronchitis;
- whooping cough;
- pneumonia;
- bronchial asthma;
- tuberculosis;
- cystic fibrosis;
- pneumoconiosis.
Dry cough is not treated with this drug.
Release form
For ease of use by all age groups, Ascoril is produced in two dosage forms: syrup (more suitable for children) and tablets (for older children and adults), although the mixture can be taken by everyone.
Pharmacodynamics
The drug combines 3 components, two of which have a mucolytic effect and one has a bronchodilator effect. Cough most often develops as a result of a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract.
Phlegm forms on the walls of the tracheobronchial tree, which the body tries to get rid of by deep inhalation, forced exhalation, and increased tone of not only the respiratory muscles, but also the abdominal muscles.
Ascoril contains:
- salbutamol - beta-2 agonist, relaxes muscles, relieves bronchial spasm, increases lung capacity, has the properties of an adrenergic stimulant, improves the mechanisms for removing viruses and bacteria from the respiratory tract; [ 3 ], [ 4 ]
- bromhexine - has an expectorant effect, increases the volume of secretions, liquefies them and promotes their removal from the body; [ 5 ]
- guaifenesin - reduces the viscosity of sputum, reflexively stimulates its discharge. [ 6 ]
Pharmacokinetics
Salbutamol is absorbed in the digestive tract, its bioavailability is 50-85% regardless of food intake. In the blood, it is maximally concentrated after 1-4 hours. The vast majority of it is excreted from the body by the kidneys and only 1-7% with feces.
Bromhexine - is metabolized in the liver to the metabolite ambroxol, the highest percentage in the blood serum is observed after an hour. Its half-life is 6 hours, excreted mainly in the urine. [ 7 ]
Guaifenesin - more than half of it is hydrolyzed in the blood as lactic acid. This takes 7 hours. It is excreted in urine. [ 8 ]
Dosing and administration
The duration of the course of treatment is determined by the doctor. Usually - 3 times a day.
The syrup is recommended for small patients aged 2-6 years in a dose of 5 ml, 6-12 years - 5-10 ml, children over 12 years and adults - 10 ml three times a day. Shake it well before use. The syrup should not be given to children for longer than a week.
The tablet preparation is prescribed to children aged 6-12 years at 0.5-1 piece at a time, for the rest - one tablet 3 times a day.
In terms of effectiveness, 96% of doctors rated Ascoril as a drug with “very high effectiveness” in treating cough in children. [ 11 ]
