Normally, antibodies to neutrophil protein kinase-3 are absent in the blood serum.

Protein kinase-3 is a neutral serine protease localized in azurophilic granules of neutrophils. Antibodies to protein kinase-3 are most characteristic of Wegener's granulomatosis, in which they are detected in 30-99% of patients. Antibodies to PPK-3 are detected in 30-40% of patients with limited or generalized forms of Wegener's granulomatosis during remission, in 70-80% of patients during the period of activity, and in 80-99% of patients with active generalized forms of the disease. The diagnostic sensitivity of antibodies to protein kinase-3 in relation to Wegener's granulomatosis ranges from 30 to 99%, specificity reaches 98%.
