With the onset of warm spring and summer days, protection from various types of blood-sucking insects becomes especially important.
We all want to spend as much time as possible outdoors – walking in the park, on evening streets or embankments, or going out of town: to the beach, to the country, on a hike or a picnic. And how we would like nothing to spoil our long-awaited leisure. But an unpleasant addition to fresh air in the summer are mosquitoes, midges, horseflies, ticks and other blood-sucking insects that can spoil our mood and pleasant pastime.
Therefore, when planning a vacation in nature, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the methods of protection against this misfortune, and choose the best one for yourself. After all, in rare cases, the consequences of bites are not only redness and itching - insects can be carriers of diseases dangerous to humans. How to choose the right mosquito aerosol?
Names of mosquito repellent aerosols
Repellents are preparations whose chemical composition is designed to repel insects with minimal impact on humans. The variety of these products includes all kinds of aerosols and sprays, creams, lotions, gels, bracelets, etc.
Mosquito aerosols are deservedly recognized as the most convenient and effective form of repellent. They are easy to distribute evenly on the skin and/or clothing, they evaporate quickly, leaving no unpleasant feeling of stickiness.
There are also aerosols for perimeter protection on sale – they are used to treat bushes and trees before sitting outside or window frames, mosquito nets, doorways before going to bed. The most popular mosquito repellents are OFF!, Raid, Raptor, Gardex, Mosquitall, Picnic.
Directions for use and precautions
The methods of application and dosage are indicated on the can in the form of infographics. Basic recommendations: spray from a distance of about 20 cm directly onto the skin and/or clothing made of natural fabrics, no more than once every 2-4 hours, no more than twice a day, avoid application to irritated/damaged skin, do not inhale, avoid contact with eyes and mouth, do not use near open fire, thoroughly wash the treated areas of the skin as soon as the need for protection disappears.
To treat facial skin, apply the spray to your palms and carefully spread it over your forehead, nose and cheeks, avoiding contact with your eyes and mouth, and rinse off any remaining liquid from your hands.
Another important point: if you think that by increasing the dose of the drug you will be more protected, this is not true - only the risk of side effects will increase.
Overdose and side effects of mosquito repellent aerosols come from failure to follow the recommendations for use, and can manifest themselves in the form of irritation of the skin and mucous membranes, headache, drowsiness, and respiratory failure. In addition, DEET has a delayed effect, which is especially dangerous for expectant mothers and small children.
The manufacturers also did not tell us anything about interactions with other drugs, but based on logical considerations, you should not use several drugs with the same active ingredient at the same time, so as not to provoke an overdose.
Storage conditions are dictated by the fact that the product is a poison and a flammable liquid, therefore it cannot be heated above 40 0 C, under no circumstances should the container be punctured even after use, store separately from food products, in dark, cool places inaccessible to children, do not apply to fabrics made of synthetic materials, plastic and leather products.
The expiration date is also indicated on the packaging and is approximately 3 years.
Mosquito repellent aerosols are a product that never loses its relevance. Despite the fact that these products should be used with extreme caution, if recommendations are followed, they will help protect us from the dangers that bites of blood-sucking insects threaten us with.
Selecting the degree of protection and contraindications
All brands have several lines, so that everyone can choose the best product. For example, Gardex offers a special service on its website for selecting repellents, the criteria for which are the type and intensity of the accumulation of insects, the duration of contact, age and motor activity of people.
The effectiveness of a protective agent depends on the percentage of toxic substances – pesticides – it contains.
The instructions must indicate the concentration of the chemical. Please note: 40% or more is likely to be hazardous to health, 15% to 30% is average protection for adults.
Considering that all repellents are pesticides, it would be worth considering the issue of their impact on our body in more detail. We could learn about this from the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics sections in the instructions, whether they are medicinal products, but manufacturers do not specify such details. However, the packaging always contains a line about precautions or contraindications for use, such as hypersensitivity and individual intolerance.
The use of mosquito repellent aerosols during pregnancy and for children under 1 year is not recommended if the active ingredient is DEET. Preparations with a different composition have shown lower efficiency, at a higher cost, so it is extremely difficult to find them here. However, Gardex, in the Baby line, offers an aerosol against ticks and mosquitoes with a low content - 8% - of diethyltoluamide (aka DEET) for treating clothes, which, according to the manufacturer, is suitable for children from 2 years old and pregnant / nursing mothers. But for lovers of fishing, rafting, hiking, powerful protective equipment is simply necessary. In such conditions, the use of mosquito repellent aerosol Off! Extreme or products from the Gardex Extreme line are appropriate and justified.
