Ulcerative membranous laryngitis

Ulcerative membranous laryngitis is very rare and is caused by fusospirillosis microbiota similar to that which causes Simanovsky-Plaut-Vincent angina.

The diagnosis is established on the basis of characteristic exudate and the presence of ulcerations of the mucous membrane of the epiglottis and aryepiglottic folds, as well as on the basis of a simultaneously occurring or preceding similar process on the palatine tonsils. The final diagnosis is established by bacteriological examination. Clinically, ulcerative-membranous laryngitis can be confused with diphtheria or with the initial stage of laryngeal pemphigus.

Antibiotic treatment results in rapid recovery.

Acute fibrinous laryngitis

Acute fibrinous laryngitis is characterized by the presence of fibrinous deposits on the mucous membrane of the larynx, which appear after thermal and chemical burns, or as a consequence of banal purulent inflammation, mostly caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or as a post-influenza complication.

The clinical course does not exceed 2-3 weeks, after which, with appropriate symptomatic and antibacterial treatment, recovery occurs.

Treatment is the same as for common acute catarrhal laryngitis.

The prognosis regarding the vocal and respiratory function of the larynx may be uncertain in the event of post-burn cicatricial stenosis or post-influenza paresis of the internal muscles of the larynx.
