Stroma Medical Corporation has introduced a new method for changing eye color from brown to blue.

As explained by the company's employees, this procedure involves the destruction of the melanin pigment, which is responsible for the dark color of the iris , using a special laser. The procedure takes about 20 seconds, and the change in eye color occurs within 2-3 weeks.

Some doctors have already questioned the safety of the procedure. For example, Elmer Tu of the College of Ophthalmology in the United States said that the melanin released into the intraocular fluid during the procedure could cause pigment glaucoma, which could subsequently lead to vision loss.

To confirm these concerns, scientists intend to conduct additional studies over the course of 6 months. If the safety of the method is proven, the device will be able to appear on the medical market in 18 months. The cost of the device, according to preliminary calculations, will be about 5,000 USD.

Stroma Medical Corporation Director Doug Daniels said that changing eye color with a laser will free a very large number of people from the need to wear contact lenses, which often interfere with vision and lead to the development of conjunctivitis and dry eye syndrome.
