How do you diagnose yourself with metabolic disorders?
Last reviewed: 02.07.2025
Metabolic disorder is a complex disorder of metabolic processes that can lead to serious consequences over time. Experts say that such disorders affect the functioning of the heart and endocrine system, and also increase the likelihood of stroke. To prevent adverse effects, many people need to urgently change their lifestyle.
As scientists representing the American National Heart, Lung, and Circulatory Institute have found out, an enlarged belly with excess fat in the waist area is a clear symptom of metabolic disorders. Moreover, this sign can be determined visually in any person.
Unsafe risk factors that relate to lipid metabolism in the body are increased levels of triglycerides against the background of a reduced amount of high-density lipoproteins in the circulatory system. Such indicators also indicate the presence of serious metabolic disorders. It should be noted that the so-called "good" cholesterol, which is usually classified as a high-density lipoprotein, is not taken into account here - such cholesterol has a beneficial effect on the circulatory system.
Another symptom indicating the development of serious metabolic disorders affecting the cardiovascular system is high blood pressure. If we are talking about a carbohydrate metabolism disorder, then the unstable blood sugar level should be a warning sign, first of all.
As scientists note, a person begins to develop metabolic syndrome when at least three of the above factors are present. If such violations are present, the risk of coronary pathologies increases twofold, and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases fivefold.
However, experts are quick to reassure: even if a patient discovers three or more signs of metabolic disorders, he can always prevent the development of complications. To do this, it is only necessary to: avoid weight gain, establish a healthy diet and lead an active lifestyle.
Experts advise to keep the body mass index below 30 U, while the abdominal circumference should not exceed 80 cm for women and 94 cm for men. Only under such conditions can we talk about the possibility of preventing the development of metabolic disorders.
To prevent further worsening of metabolic disorders, scientists recommend changing your lifestyle gradually: switch to eating healthy and high-quality foods, balance the intake of carbohydrates, proteins and fats into the body, and minimize the time a person spends without moving. If metabolic syndrome has already made itself known - for example, blood pressure periodically rises, there is an increased level of cholesterol and sugar in the blood - then, along with changing your lifestyle, you still need to consult with your doctor. It may make sense to undergo a short course of therapy so that the impaired functioning of the organs is restored faster.
