Harvest without chemicals or farm on the roof
Last reviewed: 02.07.2025
One of the world's largest rooftop farms runs entirely on renewable energy and produces dozens of times more crops each year than conventional farms, while the produce grown here is chemical-free and premium.
The founders of the Brooklyn farm Gotham Greens once decided to expand their family business, but in a very unusual way. It was decided to place the new project on the roof of one of the factories, which is located in the southern part of Chicago. It is worth noting that the farm on the roof stands out strikingly against the background of other agricultural farms located in the city. The area of agricultural land occupies 6.9 thousand square meters on the roof of one of the factories. Chicago was not chosen by chance to bring this idea to life, since this city is positioned as the most perfect on earth.
An area of about 7 thousand square meters is certainly not enough for growing agricultural products, but thanks to the greenhouses located all over the roof, even in this small area a fairly good result is obtained.
This is the third rooftop farm of its kind for Gotham Greens (the first two are located in New York City).
The unusual rooftop farm's greenhouses are climate-controlled, allowing vegetables and herbs to be grown year-round, regardless of weather conditions. The farm's delicious, organic food products will be distributed to nearby shops, restaurants, cafes and retailers, with the produce arriving to customers immediately after harvest.
According to one of the founders of the farm and the CEO of Gotham Greens, they have something to be proud of. First of all, it is about expanding their presence in the agricultural market and the ability to produce some of the best products. In particular, Gotham Greens CEO Viraj Puri noted the opportunity to supply products grown on their own farm to Chicago, the city of his childhood, in addition, today Chicago is a city of culinary innovations. Also, representatives of the farm noted that the opportunity to provide residents of Pullman (the southern part of Chicago) with work and help in providing tasty, and most importantly healthy food, is also of great importance.
The farm is completely powered by renewable energy and currently employs a well-coordinated team of 50 people. All vegetables and greens are grown without the use of chemicals using sustainable methods. Each greenhouse is controlled by high-tech equipment for temperature and humidity. As a result, one such farm is capable of producing 30 times more products than a typical agricultural farm located on the outskirts of the city.
And the opportunity to eat not only tasty, but also healthy vegetables and greens without chemicals, especially if they are grown in such unusual conditions, certainly attracts Chicago residents.
