Tooth color has an impact on sex life
Last reviewed: 01.07.2025
British researchers from the University of Leeds have found out why people should have white teeth. It is a sign of good health and an additional indicator of attractiveness.
Moms and dads were absolutely right when they made us brush our teeth and achieve a snow-white smile. They may not have had a scientific explanation for their advice, but today researchers have found one. Experts have proven what has been known for many years - people with white smiles look more attractive.
From a scientific point of view, white teeth in humans are like a peacock's tail. This is the very sign of health and "valuable genetic material" that automatically places us in the category of desirable partners. British scientists invited 150 young men and women to show them photographs of models whose teeth were slightly changed using a photo editor.
In total, models with three tooth colors were presented - yellowish-white, simply white and unrealistically white, which can only be achieved with bleaching. Volunteers were asked to determine the most attractive models from their point of view. Unsurprisingly, those with yellowish-white teeth attracted the least attention from the study participants. People with grooves between their teeth (in the style of Vanessa Paradis), which were considered sexy for some time, were not particularly popular either. But unrealistically white and simply white teeth were rated in terms of attractiveness in exactly the same way.
This means that you don't have to spend a fortune on creating Hollywood smiles. Healthy, natural whiteness will look no less dignified. So don't forget to brush your teeth twice a day, use mouthwash and floss!
