Nausea after eating is an uncomfortable condition, usually localized in the upper abdomen, closer to the diaphragm. Often, the feeling of nausea provokes vomiting, emptying the stomach of all its contents. If you feel sick after eating, this may be a single symptom, but repeated, regular nausea is a fairly clear signal of dysfunction of the digestive system. Such diseases include:

  • Ulcerative processes in the gastrointestinal tract, gastroduodenitis;
  • Gallbladder diseases, cholecystitis;
  • Inflammatory process in the pancreas, pancreatitis;
  • Infectious diseases, including intestinal ones;
  • Cardiac pathologies, including heart attack;
  • Endocrine diseases.
  • Hemicrania (migraine).

Somatic causes of nausea after eating that require medical attention:

  • If you feel nauseous after eating, and these sensations are accompanied by heartburn, pain in the epigastric region, belching, this is most likely a sign of gastric dysfunction.
  • Liver and gall bladder, when inflammatory processes occur in them, signal problems with nausea during meals. Also in these cases, pain in the upper right part of the abdomen, a feeling of bitterness in the mouth, a feeling of distension in the stomach, and flatulence are possible.
  • Inflammation of the appendix can manifest itself as nausea after eating, vomiting. Abdominal pain is not always localized in the right side, it can be vague, but after a while, with an increase in body temperature, it moves to the right lower epigastric zone.
  • Pancreatitis is characterized by typical pain that encircles the body in the diaphragm area, nausea after eating is not always present with pancreatitis, however, the acute stage of pancreatitis is characterized by both nausea and vomiting. Bloating is often observed.
  • If the cause of nausea is an infectious disease, E. coli, then, as a rule, unpleasant sensations of nausea begin an hour and a half after eating. Nausea intensifies and ends with vomiting. Infectious diseases of the digestive tract are always accompanied by diarrhea, high body temperature, pain in the navel area.
  • If you feel sick after eating for quite a long time, sometimes throughout the day, even when you are not eating, this may indicate a developing myocardial infarction. These symptoms should not be ignored, you need to call an ambulance.
  • Renal failure often manifests itself with early clinical symptoms in the form of nausea after eating, but the most characteristic symptom is nausea not caused by food. Renal pathologies are accompanied by aching or shooting pains in the lumbar region, chills.
  • Hypertension may be accompanied by nausea after eating, this symptom is especially typical for the morning. The body swells, dizziness may be felt.
  • Hypothyroidism can manifest itself in periodic feelings of nausea after eating, a person becomes weaker, has a decreased appetite, but body weight does not decrease, sometimes even increases. If you feel sick after eating, and also have lethargy, chills and drowsiness, this is a characteristic symptom of developing hypothyroidism.

Physiological causes of nausea after eating that you can deal with on your own:

  • Excessive amounts of fatty, fried foods in the diet, overeating;
  • Consumption of low-quality products with expired shelf life;
  • Disruption of the vestibular apparatus, which is not a disease, but rather a syndrome. Nausea after eating with vestibular disorders is quite common, nausea can also occur with orthostatic syndrome, when the position of the body changes abruptly. Such symptoms are accompanied by sensory changes - dizziness, nystagmus (slipping of the gaze, inability to concentrate).
  • Excessive physical activity immediately after eating (the stomach presses on the diaphragm);
  • A predictable side effect of taking certain types of medications;
  • Psychogenic factors – fear, anxiety;
  • Pregnancy;
  • Worm infestation.

Who to contact?

What can you do if you feel sick after eating?

If there is a suspicion of ulcerative pathology, gastritis, you should immediately switch to a gentle diet and consult a gastroenterologist at the first opportunity. Examinations will be prescribed, including gastroscopy, laboratory blood tests, ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs. Treatment of ulcerative processes with timely diagnosis is successful. Medicines are prescribed that relieve symptoms, heal erosive lesions of the digestive organs. Enzyme therapy, which is taken for a long course, is also effective.

Gallbladder and bile duct pathologies also require medical care. You can only switch to a fractional diet on your own. The main method of confirming gallbladder diseases is ultrasound. If the examination reveals stones, in addition to symptomatic therapy, surgical intervention may be indicated.

If you feel sick after eating and the abdominal area is constricted by extensive circular pain, this is most likely a sign of pancreatitis, which is treated either on an outpatient basis or in a hospital. The main treatment is fermentation and breakdown of food, anti-inflammatory drugs and a strict diet will also be prescribed. Independent actions should be extremely careful: you cannot heat your stomach, try to cure yourself with herbal medicine. The main rule of treatment for pancreatitis, in addition to contacting a doctor, is hunger, cold and rest.

Appendicitis undoubtedly requires urgent medical care. While waiting for the doctor, it is advisable not to take painkillers so as not to disrupt the clinical manifestations of appendicitis, if possible, limit drinking and exclude food.

Intestinal intoxication with food products. The standard method that can be used at home is vomiting. It is induced by drinking plenty of fluids. It is also necessary to take adsorbents - Enterosgel, activated carbon. If nausea does not stop within two hours, you need to call an ambulance.

Dysfunction of the vestibular apparatus is treated with vestibular training or by a neurologist. Drugs that relieve dizziness and nausea can be metoclopramide, Betaserk.

Hypertension, when a person feels sick after eating, is treated only with the help of a doctor. Taking antihypertensive drugs should be regular, often lifelong, this reduces the risk of strokes.

Cardiological pathologies are one of the most serious and life-threatening causes of the patient. At the first suspicion of heart failure, which in addition to nausea manifests itself in the form of pale skin, pain in the left half of the body, a feeling of compression or stuffiness, you must immediately call an ambulance.

Endocrine diseases are not treated independently. If hypothyroidism is diagnosed, regular intake of drugs that regulate hormonal balance is required.

Renal pathologies accompanied by nausea after eating are treated by a urologist. After a comprehensive examination, which may reveal stones or sand, anti-inflammatory treatment, physiotherapy, with the help of which it is possible to crush some types of stones, or surgery are prescribed. Independent actions can be the preparation of a strict diet, excluding spicy and salty food, bed rest and a responsible attitude to the doctor's prescriptions.

In all other cases, when nausea occurs after eating, symptomatic therapy helps.

Migraine manifestations of nausea are relieved by triptan group drugs - Sumatriptan and metoclopramide. You should also exclude from the menu products containing tyramine - hard cheese, wine, chocolate, some types of fish.

Nausea during pregnancy is a fairly typical symptom, usually passing by the second trimester. In more severe cases, monitoring of the condition by a doctor or hospitalization of the pregnant woman is indicated.

Nausea after eating is a symptom that has many causes, some of which can be dealt with independently, but persistent and prolonged nausea is a signal of trouble in the condition of internal organs and systems, this symptom requires the help of a doctor.
