If your face is swollen and you don't know the reason, or you are not sure about it, and you are tormented by the question: "What to do if your face is swollen?" it is better to seek help from a doctor who will make a diagnosis and prescribe the necessary medications for treatment. But there are some general recommendations, following which, you can fight facial swelling at home.

To get rid of facial swelling, it is necessary to address the underlying causes of this condition:

  • control the salt balance in food products to avoid fluid accumulation in tissues;
  • avoid overly spicy, smoked foods, foods with an abundance of preservatives, chemicals, and dyes, as they complicate the process of removing fluid from the body;
  • eat more fruits, vegetables and berries that help improve the functioning of the urinary system (watermelons, melons, zucchini, bananas, tangerines, etc.);
  • dinner should be no later than 3 hours before bedtime;
  • severe swelling can be removed by taking diuretics and infusions (bear's ears or horsetail are poured with boiling water like tea and drunk throughout the day);
  • Every morning it is useful to wipe your face with an ice cube from the freezer, this activates blood circulation and quickly removes accumulated fluid;
  • you can make a compress from strong green tea, it has a calming effect and improves local blood circulation;
  • a mask made from warm mashed potatoes or any fermented milk products also helps well;
  • you can do contrast washing with alternately cold and hot water;
  • if the swelling is of an allergic nature, taking antihistamines is recommended;
  • If your face is swollen after sunbathing, you can use a sour cream mask or apply the medical preparation panthenol, which has proven itself well in such situations.

It is important to find out the specific cause of facial swelling so that the approach to treatment is as comprehensive as possible.

What to do if your face swells after sleeping?

If your face noticeably swells after sleep, watch yourself closely to see how much liquid you drink at night. Morning swelling often signals water retention in the tissues for one reason or another.

A late dinner or heavy tea drinking before bed, bouts of thirst at night or overeating in the morning manifest themselves in the form of unpleasant swelling of the face.

Slagging of the body, accumulation of mineral salts, diseases and metabolic disorders also contribute to morning facial swelling. All these problems are successfully solved by streamlining your lifestyle, scheduling your daily routine, eating a balanced diet and getting timely rest.

You should reduce the amount of salt you consume, especially during the evening meal, and balance your fluid intake in any form.

However, if the manifestations of facial swelling after sleep become regular, it is recommended to visit a specialist, nephrologist or endocrinologist, and undergo the necessary examinations to determine the true causes of tissue swelling.

What to do if your face is swollen from the sun?

Tanning is not only about the beauty of the body and bronze skin color, the possible consequences of improper tanning can cross out all your backbreaking efforts on a stunning appearance. As a result of exposure to the aggressive sun, the forehead, eyelids and face can swell completely.

To prevent such unpleasant consequences, it is recommended to follow the following rules:

  • sunbathing is least dangerous in the morning and evening hours, avoiding periods of excessive solar activity (from 11 am to 3 pm);
  • you can't be under the scorching sun all the time, you should periodically go into the shade for a while to give your body and skin a rest; also try not to fall asleep while sunbathing, this is fraught with not only swelling of the skin, but also significant sunburn;
  • The use of special products that prevent sunburn and protect the skin from the negative effects of ultraviolet rays and overheating is encouraged;
  • During sunbathing, you should not drink alcoholic beverages, as they tend to increase the negative effects of ultraviolet radiation on the skin.

What to do if your face is swollen due to allergies?

Allergies usually affect different areas of the face, lips; swelling can merge and simultaneously affect large areas of the body.

Allergic swelling of the skin of the face can be caused by taking medications, certain foods, insect bites, animal hair, etc. The provoking factors are significant temperature changes.

Angioedema may appear directly on the face or be total; the skin over the swelling does not change or is slightly hyperemic.

Quincke's edema can develop instantly, with the face swelling sharply, the eyes and cheeks becoming swollen, the skin becoming tense and purple. The nasopharynx, tongue, mucous membranes of the nose and throat can also swell at the same time, which manifests itself as difficulty breathing and swallowing.

Emergency medical care for angioedema should be immediate, as the consequences of sudden tissue swelling can be life-threatening.
