Urea excretion in urine is proportional to the protein content of the diet and the rate of metabolism of endogenous proteins. Urea excreted in urine accounts for approximately 90% of the nitrogen metabolites excreted from the body. In adults in a state of nitrogen equilibrium, the excretion of 500 mmol urea (or 14 g urea nitrogen) per day corresponds to the consumption of 100 g protein.
