The eggs of the following helminths are most often found in feces.

  • Of the nematodes (roundworms) - ascaris (Ascaris lumbricoides), whipworm (Trichocephalus trichiurus), tominx (Thominx aerophilus), duodenal hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale), hookworm (Necator americanus), trichostrongylides (Trichostrongyloidea).
  • Of the trematodes (flukes) - liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica), cat fluke (Opisthorchis felineus), lanceolate fluke (Dicrocoelium lanceatum), schistosomes (Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma japonicum).
  • Of the tapeworms (cestodes) - the unarmed tapeworm (Taeniarhynchus saginatus), the armed tapeworm (Taenia solium), the broad tapeworm (Diphyllobothrium latum), and the small tapeworm (Diphyllobothrium minus).

Microscopic parasitological methods of laboratory diagnostics are direct methods for detecting helminths, their fragments, eggs and helminth larvae; vegetative and cystic forms of pathogenic protozoa, the detection and identification of which does not require indirect research methods.

To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for intestinal helminthiasis, feces are examined 1 month after its completion. If the first negative result of the feces examination is obtained, samples are taken 2 more times with an interval of 2-4 days, after which the final result of the laboratory analysis is issued. In case of strongyloidiasis, the effectiveness of treatment is monitored only by examining bile (even if the parasite was detected by coproscopic methods) 1 month after treatment.
