Treatment of atheroma involves one truly effective method - removal of the cyst by the traditional method with a scalpel or removal using laser or radio wave technology.

Other treatment options for atheroma, such as the use of external medications, traditional medicine recipes, are ineffective and do not give the desired result. Such measures can only help as auxiliary methods for healing the postoperative suture or as a way to speed up the spontaneous opening of the purulent atheroma in order to subsequently remove it on a planned basis.

Atheroma is a retention or congenital cyst of the sebaceous gland. The neoplasm is considered benign, develops very slowly, but is prone to inflammation, including purulent. Atheroma can form on almost any part of the body, excluding the palms and feet - in these areas there are no alveolar glands that produce sebum.

Treatment of atheroma at home

How to treat atheroma? This question is asked by those who accidentally discover an atypical lump on their body. It is quite natural that such a neoplasm causes not only surprise, but also anxiety. It is believed that atheroma can only be treated by removal, this is a proven, statistically confirmed, indisputable fact. Other methods, such as self-squeezing of the "wen", attempts to dissolve it with the help of external ointments, traditional medicine recipes, simply do not give results. A sebaceous cyst cannot dissolve by definition, its structure is specific and is not affected by either synthetic drugs or the medicinal properties of plants.

Treatment of atheroma at home involves only the following situations:

  1. The cyst has become inflamed and is beginning to fester. In these cases, it is better to consult a doctor for recommendations, since the use of many ointments that the patient relies on (Vishnevsky balm, ichthyol ointment, etc.) not only does not contribute to a quick breakthrough of the abscess, but also “drives” it deeper. Unlike lipoma, an atheroma always has an outlet clogged with sebum, and when the ointment gets on it, it provokes an internal subcutaneous abscess and even phlegmon.
  2. A purulent cyst is opened in an outpatient setting, treatment of such an atheroma at home involves care of the wound surface. These can be compresses with antiseptics, healing agents. But in any case, after the symptoms of inflammation subside, the cyst must be removed, as it is prone to recurrence
  3. The atheroma has already been removed and there is a need to care for the postoperative scar. Such treatment of atheroma at home may include the application of absorbable external agents

All other options, when the patient uses unverified information, are fraught with complications in the form of subcutaneous deep purulent processes. Inflamed atheromas in the head, face, armpits, groin are especially dangerous. Cases of healing a sebaceous cyst without surgery can be considered an unspecified or incorrect diagnosis, when either a lipoma or fibroma is mistaken for an atheroma. It should be noted that atheromatous neoplasms never malignize, that is, they do not degenerate into a malignant process, and lipomas and fibromas are prone to transformation into atypical tumors, albeit in rare cases. Therefore, if a person notices a "lump" or "wen" on the body, the most reasonable thing to do would be to consult a doctor - a dermatologist, cosmetologist, surgeon. Enucleation of the cyst is performed on an outpatient basis, most often under local anesthesia, the entire procedure lasts no more than 30-40 minutes, depending on the size and condition of the atheroma. Only in this way, with the help of surgery, can relapses, complications in the form of suppuration, phlegmon and more serious consequences be avoided.

Treatment of atheroma without surgery

Indeed, in the media and on the Internet, there are offers of completely painless and simple ways to neutralize so-called “fatty tumors.”

Most often, such seals and neoplasms are understood to mean lipomas or fibromas, and they are sometimes capable of resolving under the influence of ointments, lotions or compresses. However, you should also know the real facts:

  • Treatment of atheroma without surgery is a myth. All advertisements concerning such methods are at least unprofessional, at most - they are fashionable to consider real sabotage. A sebaceous gland cyst that is not removed in time can become inflamed, suppurate and develop into a subcutaneous, deep abscess, which will have to be operated on anyway.
  • If you believe the so-called "folk" recipes and try to treat a "wen", you can miss precious time and create all the conditions for the malignancy of a lipoma, which, unlike an atheroma, is prone to malignant degeneration. It is difficult to distinguish neoplasms that are similar in appearance on your own; this is within the power of an experienced doctor, who must decide how to treat a wen.
  • There are frequent cases when a small atheroma resembles a simple subcutaneous pimple. Many try to squeeze it out on their own, which leads to traumatization of the cyst capsule and inflammation of the atheroma, up to its suppuration. In addition, even after the apparent neutralization of the compaction, there is a risk of forming a new cyst, next to the one that was supposedly removed. This is how atheromatosis develops - multiple small subcutaneous cysts.
  • Spontaneous rupture of the cyst or spontaneous leakage of its contents after the advice of "steaming" and using other recipes can indeed occur. But the released detritus does not mean getting rid of the internal capsule of the atheroma, which remains in the narrowed sebaceous gland. Gradually, sebaceous secretion begins to accumulate in the capsule again, thus the cyst recurs.
  • Theoretically, compresses from a raw egg film, lubricating the surface of the atheroma with Vishnevsky balm and other, more exotic recipes can somewhat reduce the size of the cyst. However, such methods also contribute to the development of inflammation or suppuration, as they completely block the already obstructed outlet of the sebaceous gland. The result is a complication in the form of a subcutaneous rupture of the capsule and the outflow of pus into the subcutaneous tissue.

Therefore, treatment of atheroma without surgery is simply impossible, not a single such case has been confirmed by doctors and has no scientific basis. Currently, the only reliable option for getting rid of retention or congenital atheroma is total removal of the neoplasm. The earlier the surgery is performed, the less chances for inflammation and complications. In addition, timely enucleation of atheroma is a completely painless and fairly simple surgical procedure that does not leave a noticeable postoperative scar.

Treatment of atheroma with folk remedies

Despite the fact that sebaceous cysts cannot be treated with medicinal plants or other methods at home, many still decide to experiment and try to make “potions” themselves.

In this regard, we have selected the safest advice from all that are offered by websites and media. At least, the use of such decoctions, ointments or compresses will not be able to provoke inflammation or purulent process, to which atheroma is so prone.

Treatment of atheroma with folk remedies:

  1. The use of coltsfoot leaves in the form of natural compresses. Tussilago farfara - this plant was used by Hippocrates, who believed that it had the property of "opening, softening and healing." Most often, coltsfoot is used to treat colds, including diseases of the throat, bronchi, and lungs. Due to the content of organic acids, mucus and saponins, the plant really does affect the upper respiratory tract, relieving cough. However, sterols, tannins and carotenoids can serve as an anti-inflammatory agent, so Tussilago farfara is also used externally. The plant works well for furunculosis, restores tissue from burns, reducing swelling, hyperemia and inflammation. To treat atheroma, you need fresh clean coltsfoot leaves, which can be applied to the seal, securing them with a bandage or plaster. Such compresses should be done for 3-5 days. Given the ability of the healing gift of nature to "draw out" various abscesses, spontaneous opening of a suppurating cyst is possible. However, after the purulent contents have drained, the atheroma should be shown to a doctor and the issue of its radical removal should be decided.
  2. Plantago - or the well-known plantain. This plant has also been known since ancient times as an effective way to treat various wounds and suppurations. Avicenna used plantain for his patients, claiming that there is no better remedy for healing ulcerative processes. In fact, plantain leaves contain a large number of tannins, phytoncides, glycosides, which can stop bleeding, relieve inflammation, and regenerate tissue. Externally, plantain is effective against staphylococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Treatment of atheroma with folk remedies involves applying specific compresses from fresh, clean leaves of the plant. Leaves should be changed daily, preferably every 12 hours. The course of treatment for a small atheroma should not exceed 10 days, if the cyst does not decrease after this period, you should consult a doctor.
  3. Brassica is a cabbage that can be used as an external resorption agent. Cabbage contains many vitamins, thiocyanates, sulfur elements, glycosides, acids, phytoncides and lysozyme, which has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect as an external substance. In the treatment of inflamed atheroma, a freshly washed cabbage leaf is used, which is placed over the cyst and secured in any convenient way. Before use, it is better to lightly beat the leaf so that it releases juice, and during the day it should be changed several times as it dries. Such a remedy can be tried to reduce the symptoms of inflammation of the sebaceous cyst, but in the case of its suppuration, neither cabbage, nor plantain, nor coltsfoot will help - you must immediately consult a doctor to avoid complications in the form of a deep subcutaneous abscess.

Other methods of folk medicine, such as baked onions, silver objects or raw egg film, are at least extravagant in our age, equipped with many modern and effective medical technologies and drugs. In addition, the use of questionable methods can contribute to the addition of a secondary infection to the inflamed lipoma, this is especially dangerous when the atheroma is localized on the head, in the facial area, in the armpits and groin area.

Ointment for atheroma

External medications can be used in the treatment of sebaceous gland cysts only as an auxiliary method after surgical removal. Less often, ointment for atheroma is used in the treatment of the inflammatory process, when it is necessary to provoke a rapid outflow of pus. In such cases, doctors, as a rule, open the cyst, drain it, then sanitize the internal cavity, capsule, and only then perform total excision of the atheroma. Other options, when a gel or ointment is applied to the skin, in the hope that the neoplasm will resolve, are ineffective.

Ointment for atheroma can be used in the following situations:

  1. The cyst became inflamed, suppurated and was opened. After drainage, an anti-inflammatory ointment may be prescribed, for example, Levosin, Levomekol, Solcoseryl, Iruksol, Vishnevsky ointment, Eplan, ointment with propolis.
  2. After the operation, a scar remains, the resorption of which must be accelerated. In such cases, the following drugs are effective (the choice is made by the doctor depending on the location of the cyst):
    • Troxevasin.
    • Heparin.
    • Lyoton.
    • Strataderm.
    • Contratubex.
    • Bodyaga Forte.
    • Dermatix.
    • Zeraderm Ultra.
    • Kelofibrase.
    • Mederma.
  3. Dermatoprotectors containing retinoid. These ointments help improve skin nutrition, activate tissue metabolism, and regulate the process of epithelial cell replacement. Thus, such products reduce the risk of hyperkeratosis, and therefore the risk of rapid atheroma growth. The following external preparations can be prescribed in this capacity:
    • Differin.
    • Baziron.
    • Effesel gel.
    • Klenzit gel.
    • Isotrexin gel.
    • Adolen gel.
    • We see the ointment.
    • Adapalene gel.

There are also recipes for homemade ointments made from plants and fats, but such remedies cannot be considered effective, moreover, the process of their preparation is not sterile, therefore the ointment will be unsafe. It is much more expedient and reasonable to use ready-made pharmacy drugs that the attending physician will prescribe strictly in accordance with the indications, with the size and condition of the atheroma.

Vishnevsky ointment for atheroma

The authorship of this remedy with a characteristic smell belongs to the famous surgeon of the last century - A.V. Vishnevsky. In the distant 1927, the doctor used a new method of treating purulent wounds, he combined xeroform, birch tar and castor oil, resulting in an amazing drug that saved many from complications and even from amputation. In the treatment of sebaceous cysts, this balm is used for inflammation, as well as for suppuration.

How does Vishnevsky ointment work against atheroma?

  • Tar promotes active blood flow, which improves tissue nutrition and trophism.
  • Castor oil is the base carrier of the active components of the balm; it penetrates into the subcutaneous tissue, transporting the antiseptic and irritating substances of the tar.
  • Xeroform is an effective antiseptic substance that destroys pathogenic microorganisms and relieves symptoms of inflammation.

Strictly speaking, Vishnevsky ointment is not quite the correct definition; it is rather a liniment, a balm, more liquid in consistency and absorbed much faster.

In this regard, Vishnevsky ointment for atheroma can be used as an effective remedy for treating an already opened purulent cyst. As a rule, a neoplasm with signs of inflammation is not removed, they try to open it, remove the purulent contents, sanitize the capsule and remove all the symptoms of the pathological process. In this case, balsamic liniment comes to the rescue, which effectively fights inflammation for 3-5 days, but is not able to completely dissolve the cyst itself, its capsule.

How is Vishnevsky balm used in the treatment of purulent atheroma?

  • A bandage soaked in liniment is applied to the open wound surface.
  • The bandage is not removed for 12 hours, after which it is changed.
  • The course of treatment with the ointment depends on the size of the atheroma and the wound surface (incision), but should not exceed 7 days.
  • On a cyst that has not yet cleared of pus, Vishnevsky balm is applied by application – along the edges of the incision.
  • The ointment should not be applied to a simple atheroma without signs of inflammation or suppuration. This is due to its composition, which can contribute to even greater blockage of the obturated duct and create a risk of forming a subcutaneous abscess.
  • It is necessary to take into account the possibility of an allergic reaction to the components of the ointment, therefore it is initially applied in small quantities or a skin test is carried out.

Levomekol for atheroma

Levomecol is an active combination drug with a pronounced antimicrobial effect. Levomecol for atheroma can be prescribed as a drug to provide the following actions:

  • Anti-inflammatory effect in the treatment of purulent atheroma.
  • Dehydrant – reduces swelling during inflammation of atheroma.
  • Antimicrobial effect when a secondary infection is added to the atheroma (the drug is effective against staphylococci and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) •
  • Levomekol activates tissue regeneration in the postoperative period and heals wounds.

How is Levomekol used for atheroma?

  1. After the cyst is removed, a sterile napkin soaked in ointment is applied to the incision. The napkin is changed every 6-8 hours for 3-4 days, depending on the size and depth of the incision. As a rule, Levomekol is prescribed for the treatment of drained purulent atheroma and after its surgical excision.
  2. If the atheroma is large and its enucleation is accompanied by a fairly deep tissue incision, a napkin soaked in ointment is often placed directly inside, in place of the removed tissue sector.
  3. Often, a slightly warmed agent (levomekol) is injected with a syringe directly into the purulent cavity - through a drain, catheter. Such procedures are carried out every day until the cyst capsule is completely cleared of purulent contents.

Independent use of Levomekol in the treatment of sebaceous gland cysts is not advisable, since the ointment has specific contraindications and can cause an allergic reaction.

Treatment of atheroma inflammation

Before discussing the treatment of atheroma inflammation, it should be mentioned that a timely removal of a sebaceous gland cyst means the absence of the risk of an inflammatory process and its consequences. What complications can there be with inflammation?

  • Abscess.
  • Phlegmon.
  • Relapse of cyst development at the site of a spontaneously opened abscess.
  • The addition of a secondary infection and the formation of nearby abscesses.
  • Infection of the scar after spontaneous opening of the inflamed atheroma.

How is atheroma inflammation treated?

  1. A small cyst with signs of inflammation is treated with external anti-inflammatory drugs. Such atheromas are removed only after the symptoms of the process have subsided.
  2. A purulent cyst, especially a large one, is opened on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. A drainage tube is inserted into the incision to ensure proper drainage of the contents. At the same time, the atheroma cavity is sanitized with an antiseptic. After complete evacuation of pus, the atheroma is excised completely within healthy tissues.
  3. Self-treatment of the inflammatory process is not only inappropriate, but also risky. This can lead to the melting of the atheroma capsule, its rupture and the leakage of purulent detritus into the subcutaneous tissue. In the best case, a subcutaneous abscess is formed, in the worst case - extensive phlegmon.
  4. Treatment after surgical incision of the abscess is similar to the standard treatment of purulent wounds - application of dressings, napkins soaked in anti-inflammatory ointments, liniments, sprays (Vishnevsky balm, Levomekol, Oflokain, Olazol - in aerosol form).
  5. Antibiotics are not used in the treatment of atheroma inflammation due to the fact that the skin tissues in these cases are often necrotic and resistant to the action of drugs of this category.

Treatment of atheroma is its removal, timely measures taken not only allow to avoid complications in the form of abscesses, but also reduce the risk of visible postoperative scars. Thus, it is quite simple to neutralize atheroma, taking into account the achievements of medicine - laser or radio wave method, you just need to seek help from a doctor in time.
