Pharmacodynamics
The drug is of plant origin. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and in addition antirheumatic properties, acting in the treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system. The main active elements of the roots of the plant Harpagophyitum procumbens are iridoids (such as procumbin with harpagoside, and also harpagide with 8-p-coumaroylharpagide).
Due to the fact that today it has not been possible to identify all the active components of the drug, the entire extract is considered as a therapeutically active component. During in vitro tests, the effect of the Harpagophyitum procumbens root extract, as well as the elements isolated from it, on the processes of eicosanoid biosynthesis was noted.
The element harpagoside (the intensity of the effect is determined by the size of the portion of the drug) inhibits the process of biosynthesis of the components LT and THB 2; in particular, the binding of Cys-LTs is inhibited. But studies show that the extract has a higher efficiency - this indicates a synergistic complementary effect of anti-inflammatory substances. The suppressive effect of flavonoids (they are also part of the extract) in relation to the binding of PG has been known for a long time.
Camphor oil with luteolin, which are part of the drug, in combination with bile and tannic acids have a suppressive effect on collagen hydrolysis caused by collagenase activity. Animal tests have demonstrated the presence of a general anti-inflammatory effect in drugs based on the root of Harpagophyitum procumbens (tea and extract). It should be noted that the anti-inflammatory effect of the drug becomes more pronounced if the patient has chronic forms of inflammation (compared to acute ones).
For pains in which a pain-reducing effect is observed regardless of the treatment method used, it is possible that the drug has a peripheral analgesic effect.
Dosing and administration
The drug is taken three times a day, a single dose is 1-2 capsules (teenagers over 12 years old, as well as adults). Children from 6 years old should take 1 capsule 3 times a day. The capsules should be taken before meals. They should not be chewed - swallow whole and wash down with water.
The course of therapy usually lasts for 1-1.5 months, but in case of chronic diseases it can last longer. It is forbidden to interrupt the therapy prematurely.
