Why can a pimple appear under the nose? Is it the result of some disease, or just a coincidence? How to get rid of this unattractive formation?
It's rare that someone has never encountered such a problem. Therefore, there are good reasons to look into this issue in more detail.
ICD 10 code
- L 00 – L 99 – diseases of the skin and subcutaneous fat.
- L 60 – L 75 – diseases of skin appendages.
- L 70 – acne.
Causes of a pimple under the nose
What is the pathogenesis of acne?
A pimple appears on the surface of the skin due to blockage of the sebaceous ducts by its own secretions, which, when in contact with air, form a kind of plug. In addition, an infection can get into the duct, which provokes the development of an inflammatory reaction. Thus, a red pimple is formed, with the subsequent formation of a pustule or wound.
There are quite a lot of sebaceous glands near the nose, so the appearance of a pimple in this particular place is not uncommon.
So what are the causes of sebaceous duct blockage?
- Active hormonal background. Most often, acne appears during the period of active sexual development - in teenagers. A surge in hormone levels becomes the main factor in increased sebum production, which can lead to its accumulation in the pores. If, against the background of this condition, there is poor nutrition or insufficient skin care, then inflammatory foci can form - large acne, often multiple.
- Improper diet. It has long been known that our diet and lifestyle largely affect the quality of the skin. Alcohol, animal fats, hot spices, smoked products and sweets directly affect the liver. If the liver does not cope with its main function, various rashes may appear on the skin, especially in the face area.
- Frequent or severe stress. After experiencing stress, depression or nervous exhaustion, the secretion of sebum also increases, which causes acne.
- Runny nose, including allergic. When you have a runny nose, mucous discharge flows out of your nose, and there is constant friction of the skin with nasal tissues and hands, which also leads to irritation and inflammation of the sebaceous ducts.
- Insufficient hygiene. Bacteria, dust particles, exfoliated epidermal cells, cream or cosmetic residues accumulating on the surface of the skin can artificially clog the channels, resulting in inflammatory reactions in the form of acne.
Symptoms of a Pimple Under the Nose
A pimple can be of two types:
- with signs of inflammation - papules (red pimples), pustules (purulent pimples), nodules (large painful pimples), cysts (the most severe form of acne);
- without signs of inflammation – blackheads or comedones.
The first signs that a pimple will soon form under the nose are a small, pinpoint soreness of the skin in a certain place, sometimes accompanied by itching. Gradually, a small spot appears - reddish or light, depending on the type of pimple that is forming.
Once the pimple under the nose becomes obvious, its symptoms expand.
- It often happens that a pimple under the nose hurts. Pain may indicate the presence of an inflammatory process in the pimple - for example, with a skin cold caused by prolonged exposure to cold or wind. The development of such a pimple begins with the appearance of a red spot, which gradually increases and turns into a painful elevation without signs of accumulation of pus inside. The condition may be accompanied by symptoms of acute respiratory infections, staph infection, herpes, as well as infectious diseases of the digestive system.
- White pimples under the nose can manifest as one of the types of acne - these are rashes in the form of small white nodules, quite dense when palpated. A white pimple is a fatty accumulation under the surface of the skin. Such an accumulation is caused by clogging of the pore with sweat secretions. Most often, white formations under the nose appear in people with increased oiliness of the skin on the face, or in those who are prone to increased sweating.
- Red pimples under the nose are almost always inflammatory in nature, which is explained by the presence of bacteria in the area where pimples appear, which actively develop in the oily skin environment. Red pimples rise above the skin surface by 1-4 mm during growth, sometimes accompanied by pain when touched. Such rashes usually resolve on their own, without leaving any traces on the surface of the face.
- A subcutaneous pimple under the nose at the initial stages of development is a compacted point area, which over time matures into a large pimple. Such an element looks like a reddened elevation, causing pain even with a light touch. A subcutaneous pimple is difficult to treat, and often leaves traces or small scars.
- An internal pimple under the nose is often a consequence of acute local inflammation of the sebaceous duct. Such a pimple can be flat, or in the form of a cone or hemisphere. The internal cavity of the formation is usually filled with pus.
- A pimple under the nose of a baby can be a sign of hormonal changes in the child's body. Such changes usually occur in the second or third month of the baby's life. Pimples are usually small, often multiple, and can appear and disappear on their own, without any treatment. The skin condition normalizes as soon as the hormonal background becomes stable.
Consequences and complications of acne under the nose
Often, after a pimple has healed, a dark or light spot remains on the skin's surface. This condition is medically called post-inflammatory skin pigmentation. Most often, such spots disappear on their own after some time.
A much bigger problem is such a complication of a pimple as the formation of scar tissue. Most often, this happens when a pimple is forcibly squeezed. The larger the pimple, the larger the scar it leaves behind.
Acne scars themselves do not pose any danger, except that they are an unpleasant cosmetic defect. It is very difficult to get rid of such a defect, and in most cases the scars remain for life.
If you follow the rules of personal hygiene and facial skin care, the prognosis for acne is considered favorable.
Diagnosis of a pimple under the nose
A routine external examination and tests can be used for diagnosis, but in most cases an external examination is sufficient.
Laboratory tests are prescribed to female patients if obvious hormonal disorders are suspected. Testing for testosterone, FSH, and LH in the blood is used.
Laboratory tests for bacterial or fungal infection are performed to rule out the development of folliculitis.
Instrumental diagnostics are used only in cases where the appearance of acne is associated with diseases of internal organs - for example, with diseases of the digestive system.
Differential diagnostics are prescribed to exclude the following diseases:
- rosacea;
- folliculitis;
- keratosis.
You may need to consult with specialists such as a dermatovenerologist, infectious disease specialist, gastroenterologist, endocrinologist, etc.

Treatment of pimple under the nose
If you are primarily interested in the question of how to squeeze a pimple under the nose, then you should know that it is absolutely not recommended to do this. Squeezing pimples most often leads to their further spread. In addition, a scar or an unpleasant pigmented mark may form at the site of the squeezed pimple. If you squeeze an inflamed deep-seated nodule, you can accidentally infect the skin. In the future, this may result in negative consequences, up to the point that you will have to use surgical treatment.
How to cure a pimple? And how to remove a pimple during menstruation, when there is a hormonal restructuring of the body?
First of all, stop using any cosmetics. Trying to mask the defect with a layer of powder and foundation, you clog the inflamed pore even more, which only worsens the situation.
Wash your face only with soft, warm water, without using aggressive detergents.
Medicines are used only after consultation with a dermatologist. Most often, these are either hormonal drugs or antibacterial agents. Of the antibiotics, preference is given to the tetracycline group: treatment begins with external use of antibacterial creams. This can be tetracycline or chloramphenicol ointment, as well as the combined ointment Levomekol. Usually, the course of local antibiotic therapy lasts two weeks, after which the rashes are eliminated for a long time.
After each washing, it is recommended to treat the affected area of the skin with Polysorb, which will cleanse and dry the inflamed surface.
If the appearance of a pimple is associated with problems with the digestive organs, then it is often recommended to use drugs to combat dysbacteriosis. These can be such drugs as Lactovit, Bifidumbacterin, Lactomun, etc.
Often, a good effect is achieved by local application of pharmaceutical ointments Baziron, Zinerit or Skinoren. It is preferable to apply them in the morning after washing and at night.
If pus appears inside the pimple, it may be enough to treat the inflammatory element with a cotton swab dipped in iodine solution.
You cannot cover an inflamed pimple with a band-aid: the lack of air access will aggravate the inflammatory process.
If you are close to such a method of treatment as homeopathy, then you can use the remedy Sulphur 6C - it is considered especially effective for the treatment of teenage acne. Sulphur is produced in the form of external ointments and granules for internal use. The course of treatment with ointment is 7-10 days: treat the rash in the evening, shortly before bedtime. Granules are used in C6 dilution, usually once a week. The exact regimen is prescribed individually, based on the causes of the disease.
Folk remedies for pimples under the nose
Herbal treatment usually gives a good, but not quick effect. Folk remedies are also often used to prevent the recurrence of rashes.

- Elecampane flowers 1 tbsp, calendula flowers 1 tbsp, walnut leaves 1 tbsp. Pour 400 ml of hot water and keep on the fire for 15 minutes, then leave for one hour. Use to wipe the skin of the face three times a day.
