Common complications of colds are runny nose and cough. Laryngotracheitis, tracheitis, tracheobronchitis, bronchitis and pneumonia, regardless of genesis, are accompanied by cough. The intensity of the cough reflex depends on the degree of involvement of the chest organs in the inflammatory process. The use of ointments to reduce the symptoms of complications of colds is based on the warming effect and anti-inflammatory inhalation of active essential vapors. The ease of use of an auxiliary method of treating cough is also attractive. The manifestation of side effects from the effects of this method of therapy is reduced to a minimum. If you use ointments correctly and do not overdo it with the amount of the drug used (burns may occur at the site of application with too large doses of the drug), then the treatment will have only positive dynamics.

Warming ointments for cough

Almost any cold is accompanied by a cough. In the modern world, a large number of various drugs are produced to combat this symptom. Cough ointments are widely available. Supporters of traditional medicine classify this remedy as a distracting procedure. But the drugs are very popular. They often contain menthol, turpentine, camphor, thymol (thyme), methyl ester of salicylic acid, etc. When applied externally, these components have a fairly strong antiseptic, warming, diaphoretic, blood circulation-enhancing effect and ultimately lead to the stimulation of expectoration.

Warming ointments for coughs include:

  • Balsam Star
  • Bom-benge
  • Boromenthol
  • Combigrip, etc.

The advantage of these preparations is their ease of use. It is enough to take the required amount and rub it into the chest, throat, back or feet for 10 minutes. It is advisable to rub it in the evening before going to bed.

Rubbing should not be used at high body temperature. Do not forget about possible local allergic reactions. Warming ointment for cough is not used in the acute stage of the disease. Use is permissible in the period approaching recovery to eliminate residual manifestations of a cold. Warming ointments are not used in children under 1 year old, and in older children extreme caution is observed.

Cough rub ointments

From ancient times to the present day, an effective method for overcoming cough in children and adults has been preserved - rubbing. This procedure consists of activating the intensity of blood flow and warming, which stimulates the discharge of pathological secretion of the tracheobronchial tree and reduces coughing.

For rubbing, use industrially produced turpentine ointment, Dr. Mom, Vicks-active, Bryonia ointment, ointments containing essential oils, bear, badger, goat fat. The active components of each product have good permeability and antiphlogistic action.

Traditional healers recommend using goat or badger fat for rubbing. You can use fat in its pure form or with various additives (bee products, alcohol or vodka). Honey has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and soothing properties. Alcohol or vodka promote deep warming and dilation of blood vessels in the chest organs.

Doctor Mom ointment, sold in pharmacies, is used for rubbing. The ointment contains eucalyptus and menthol, which intensively warm the chest and have antibacterial properties.

Rubbing with cough ointments promotes more active removal of phlegm from the lungs, accelerating recovery.

It is necessary to carry out the rubbing procedure correctly. Honey-containing ointments must be warmed up to obtain a homogeneous consistency before use. Any of the ointments used should be at room temperature. The product is applied to the chest according to the instructions, but the area of the heart projection is almost always excluded. The rubbed areas are covered with natural fabric or a towel. The patient is wrapped in a blanket and allowed to lie quietly for at least 2 hours. It is better to carry out the procedure before going to bed.

Ointment forms of cough medicines can stain underwear and bed linen. In this case, it is necessary to use old things that you will not mind throwing away later.

Rubbing is permitted only in the absence of elevated temperature and for children over 2 years of age.

Cough ointments for children

Cough ointments for children have been used for many centuries. Now the pharmaceutical industry produces a large number of all kinds of cough ointments and creams intended for use in treating children. They are all used differently. The action of some is based on the inhalation of essential oils that have anti-inflammatory properties, while others are effective when rubbed in. Before using an ointment to treat a cough, a mandatory consultation with a pediatrician is necessary. Each ointment has its own list of indications and contraindications. When coughing due to whooping cough, rubbing with an ointment is unlikely to give a positive result, because the nature of this cough lies in the irritation of certain areas of the central nervous system.

When a child has influenza or acute respiratory viral infection, it is necessary to determine whether the cough is dry or wet. In the initial stage of a cold, the cough is usually dry.

Over a period of time, the dry (non-productive) cough becomes wet. The patient's general condition improves, mucopurulent sputum begins to separate.

The use of ointments is effective in converting unproductive cough into productive (wet). Rubbing will speed up the evacuation of sputum and promote a speedy recovery. Cough ointments can be used from any childhood age, including infants, but it is important to remember the child's sensitivity features. If the ointment is used for the first time by a child, then it is necessary to conduct a test for individual susceptibility. To do this, apply a small amount of the product to the inner surface of the elbow bend. If there is no local redness or rash, then you can safely start using the drug.

The most popular ointments in pediatrics are:

  • Pulmex baby;
  • Dr. Mom;
  • Dr. Theis;
  • Teddy bear;
  • Badger and others.

All cough ointments are applied to the chest, avoiding the projection of the heart, to the back, and to the feet. When using ointment to treat a runny nose, the wings of the nose are lubricated with the preparation.

Rubbing with ointment is an effective and simple method for relieving cough, which promotes a speedy recovery. The variety of cough ointments produced by the pharmaceutical industry leaves no doubt that the method is actively used in therapeutic treatment. But rubbing with ointments is not an absolutely safe method. Do not forget about the individual sensitivity of the body to the components of the ointment, possible age restrictions, and the duration of exposure of the ointment to the skin. All these features will be taken into account by the doctor when prescribing a drug for rubbing. Self-medication is unacceptable, although at first glance, the use of ointment seems absolutely harmless.
