Pulmonary acute thyroiditis proceeds according to the type of aseptic inflammation due to trauma and hemorrhage into the gland or after radiation therapy. The recently applied treatment with fractional doses of 131 I reduced the number of radiation thyroiditis. Earlier, they occurred in about 5% of cases 2-3 weeks after taking the drug due to destruction of the follicular epithelium.

Patients are concerned about soreness, a feeling of pressure in the gland, sometimes mild symptoms of thyrotoxicosis; tachycardia, emotional lability, sweating.

Treatment of the non-swollen acute thyroiditis
Treatment of non-parenteral acute thyroiditis is symptomatic: analgesics, beta-blockers. Usually the disease lasts for 3-4 weeks. Particular attention should be paid to the possibility of developing post-radial thyroiditis with a congestive location of the gland, since an increase in the size of the gland due to inflammation can cause compression of the mediastinal organs, which is one of the contraindications for the use of radioactive iodine (it is used only if there is a suspicion of goitre malignancy).
