Libexin is an antitussive drug that corresponds to codeine in its therapeutic effect. The drug does not cause addiction, and in addition, it does not suppress the implementation of respiratory processes.

It has a local anesthetic and bronchodilatory effect, which allows it to block the peripheral areas of the cough reflex. Its use helps to facilitate the processes of expectoration and breathing. [ 1 ]

Indications Libecsin

It is used in the following cases:

  • pleuropneumonia;
  • performing operations in the pleural area;
  • pulmonary infarction;
  • flu or asthma;
  • pleurisy, which has a dry or exudative form;
  • pulmonary emphysema;
  • bronchitis in the active or chronic phase;
  • any form of cough that is unproductive;
  • night cough in people with heart failure.

Release form

The drug is released in tablets - 20 pieces in a cell package.

Pharmacodynamics

The active component of the drug, prenoxdiazine hydrochloride, exhibits antitussive activity through the following effects:

  • local anesthetic effect reduces the excitability of peripheral cough endings;
  • the bronchodilatory effect leads to the suppression of baroreceptors, which are involved in the development of the cough reflex;
  • reduces the activity of the respiratory center without causing respiratory depression.

The antitussive effect lasts for over 3-4 hours.

Pharmacokinetics

The medicine is almost completely absorbed at high speed in the gastrointestinal tract; the level of protein synthesis is 57%. The Cmax values in the blood are noted after 0.5 hours from the moment of taking the tablet. The therapeutic indicators of the drug are maintained for 7 hours.

The half-life is 2.5 hours. Metabolic processes are realized mainly inside the liver.

Dosing and administration

Libexin is prescribed to adults in a dosage of 0.1 g, taken 3-4 times a day; in severe conditions, a dose of 0.2 g can be used in the same frequency.

For a child, taking into account his age, dosages of up to 50 mg are prescribed, taken 3 times a day.

The tablets must be swallowed whole, without chewing.

  • Application for children

For persons under 3 years of age, the use of the medication in the specified form of release is prohibited.

Use Libecsin during pregnancy

Pregnant women can use the medicine only with a doctor's prescription and only under his constant supervision.

Contraindications

Main contraindications:

  • abundant secretion within the respiratory tract;
  • severe intolerance associated with the action of the drug;
  • galactosemia;
  • condition after the use of anesthesia through inhalation.

Side effects Libecsin

Rare side effects include a tendency to develop constipation, stomach pain, nausea, xerostomia or dry throat, and anesthesia of the oral mucosa.

In case of administration of large doses, a weak sedative effect or increased fatigue may develop.

Interactions with other drugs

The medication is prohibited to be used in combination with mucolytics and expectorants, because this can lead to difficulty in the process of sputum discharge.

Storage conditions

Libexin should be stored in a place closed to small children. Maximum temperature is 25°C.

Shelf life

Libexin can be used within a 5-year period from the date of manufacture of the medicinal product.

Analogues

The analogue of the drug is the substance Glauvent.
