Diabetes is characterized by loss of sensitivity of cells to insulin (type 2) or complete absence of its production as a result of their death in the endocrine part of the pancreas (type 1). This hormone is necessary for the absorption of carbohydrates, without it, blood sugar increases and this is fraught with dangerous consequences for all human organs. The disease requires a special approach to your diet, a significant reduction in fats and carbohydrates in the menu, an increase in food rich in fiber. Can you drink juices with diabetes?
Juices are a concentrated composition of the raw materials from which they are made. So, to make a glass of apple juice, you need 4-5 medium-sized fruits, pineapple juice - almost a whole pineapple, etc. Even if you do not add sugar, fruits made from fruit contain it in sufficient quantities to harm a diabetic, because they contain a lot of easily digestible carbohydrates: sucrose, fructose. Within half an hour after drinking 200 ml of fruit juice, blood glucose increases by 3-4 mmol / l, and if you wash it down with a full meal, then by 7-8 units. These facts indicate that although juices contain many useful substances for the body, diabetics need to approach their consumption carefully and carefully.
Healthy Juices for Diabetes
It is best to find a golden mean in nutrition between benefit and harm, because you can satisfy your gastronomic needs using a harmless and tasty product. In this context, we are talking exclusively about freshly squeezed juices. Let's consider which of them are suitable for diabetics:
- Pomegranate juice - this fruit is sour in taste, which means it has little sugar. The value of pomegranate is in its low calorie content with a large amount of vitamins (C, E, group B), minerals (calcium, phosphorus, aluminum, manganese, chromium, etc.), amino acids (15 names), fatty acids, flavonoids, tannins. It increases blood glucose, immunity, normalizes blood pressure, reduces cholesterol, strengthens the walls of blood vessels, connective and bone tissues, accelerates regeneration processes, removes toxins and slags, stabilizes hormonal levels, promotes digestion. All these qualities are ideal for diabetics. It should be drunk diluted - on average, 50 ml of juice per half a glass of water. Drinking before meals, it reduces thirst, reduces dry mouth, improves overall well-being. It can cause harm to people with increased stomach acidity, pancreatitis, which often accompanies diabetes, peptic ulcer disease, and exacerbations of gastritis;
- apple juice - not every apple is suitable for this pathology. Juice from green sour fruits is exactly what will saturate with pectins, enzymes, microelements, vitamins, will help in the fight against vitamin deficiency and anemia, will cleanse the blood. Do not forget that diabetics should not eat more than 2-3 apples a day, so you need to squeeze juice from the same amount of fruits;
- Burdock juice for diabetes - another name for it is agrimony, has a unique composition, thanks to which it is possible to reduce the dose of insulin. It contains fatty oils necessary for patients, accelerating tissue regeneration, bitter glycosides that regulate carbohydrate metabolism, the polysaccharide inulin, which breaks down fats and improves the functionality of the pancreas, tannins, which have anti-inflammatory and bactericidal properties. In addition, vitamin C prevents the development of infectious diseases, carotene improves vision, rutin makes the walls of blood vessels more elastic. It is undesirable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, parallel intake of diuretics. Juice can be obtained from young leaves of the plant in the period from April to June. At other times, they are less valuable. They are plucked and soaked in water for 3 hours, after light drying, they are passed through a meat grinder twice and squeezed out. You can also get juice from the roots, chopping them and squeezing them well. The resulting drink can be stored for no more than 3 days; to prepare it for the future, it must be frozen, preserved or mixed with alcohol;
- lemon juice - sour taste, containing ascorbic acid, citric, malic, pectin, phytoncides, carotene, riboflavin, thiamine, flavonoids, rutin and other equally useful substances. We eat lemon to prevent colds, because it strengthens the immune system, with vitamin deficiency, gastrointestinal tract pathologies, urolithiasis, gout, rheumatism, hypertension. Previously, it was in demand for the prevention of scurvy. Such a wide range of action of its biologically active components is especially valuable in diabetes mellitus, unless there is excessive secretion of hydrochloric acid. It can be drunk diluted with water, but natural lemon is consumed through a straw so as not to harm tooth enamel;
- lemon juice with egg for diabetes - this combination of products is used to reduce sugar levels for a long time. A cocktail is prepared by combining the juice of one lemon with an egg, stir well and drink in the morning on an empty stomach. After 3 days, take a break for a month, then repeat;
- orange juice - this citrus fruit itself is very useful for humans, it boosts immunity, antioxidants in its composition are a good cancer prevention, it effectively cleanses the intestines, its specific pigments fight glaucoma, cataracts, which is important for diabetics. But the fruit contains fiber, which slows down the process of glucose absorption into the blood, there is little of it in juices. If nutritionists allow 1-2 fruits per day, then juices from the same number of oranges should be drunk very carefully, diluting them with water in a ratio of 1:2;
- apricot juice - has many useful properties: carotene - turns into vitamin A, which is so necessary for the body, cleanses it from free radicals, pectins - remove slags and toxins, minerals - participate in the processes of metabolism and hematopoiesis. Apricot fights putrefactive bacteria in the intestines, strengthens the nervous system, bone tissue. All this could work for a diabetic, if it were not for the many sugars in it. This drink is unacceptable for diabetics;
- Birch sap - due to its healing properties, many people try to collect as much of it as possible in the spring and preserve it for the rest of the year. For diabetes, a fresh drink will be more beneficial; it can also be frozen. Due to the low glucose content, as well as record calcium, it will not harm and at the same time strengthen blood vessels, improve heart function. Saponins in its composition will reduce the load on the kidneys, break down stones in them. Amino acids and essential oils are involved in cleansing organs from harmful toxic substances. Drink a glass of it three times a day 20-30 minutes before meals.
Vegetable Juices for Type 2 Diabetes
In addition to fruit juices, there are various vegetable juices. Non-insulin-dependent diabetes type 2 requires strict adherence to a diet, so we will focus on the most popular ones that can help with diabetes:
- tomato juice — tomatoes have a low glycemic index (15 units), which alone speaks in its favor. Fresh juice from it contains minerals important for humans: phosphorus, potassium, iron, calcium, iodine, zinc, fluorine; vitamins B, C, E, niacin, folic acid, carotene, lycopene, etc. The energy value of tomatoes is low (20 kcal per 100 g of weight), it does not contain fats, so its use will not harm the pancreas, restore water-salt balance, reduce cholesterol, have a beneficial effect on cardiac activity, but can negatively affect health in case of gout, exacerbation of gastritis, pancreatitis, peptic ulcer. It can be drunk daily separately from the main meal in a volume of 500-600 ml;
- potato juice - it is not a tasty treat that can bring pleasure, but for the sake of your health it is quite possible to take a few sips twice a day (half a glass at a time is recommended). This product has a wound-healing, general strengthening and anti-inflammatory effect, the only condition for this is to prepare it immediately before use;
- carrot juice - even children know about the benefits of this vegetable: beta-carotene, vitamins C, E, B, K, many minerals. Ophthalmologists insist on including it in the diet to improve visual acuity, it is also recommended to strengthen the body, blood vessels, and increase resistance to viral and bacterial agents. Its glycemic index in its raw form is not high, so juices with a volume limit of 250 ml per day are quite acceptable for diabetics;
- beetroot juice - what can alert people with diabetes is the high content of sucrose. On the other hand, it has a lot that could provide an invaluable service to the patient's health - it cleans blood vessels, reduces "bad" cholesterol levels, blood pressure, i.e. fights the consequences of diabetes. In this situation, it is important to maintain a balance between benefit and harm, which means adhering to the required dosage - 50 ml at a time, 4 times a day, monitoring its effect on sugar levels. If it clearly increases, you should refuse;
- pumpkin juice - there are probably no people who have not heard about the benefits of this berry, so pumpkin dishes and diabetes are good "partners". Its special significance for people with this pathology is that pumpkin promotes the production of its own insulin. In addition, it helps remove fluid from the body, harmful cholesterol, and avoid anemia. The berry is useful in any form, including juices. Fresh fruit is grated and squeezed through cheesecloth;
- cucumber juice - although the vegetable does not have an abundance of vitamins, and water predominates, it is effective as a diuretic and choleretic agent, which is important for endocrine diseases. In addition, it contains such microelements as potassium, sodium, phosphorus, potassium, chlorine. It is believed that cucumber prevents the development of atherosclerosis, strengthens the nervous and vascular systems. There are no restrictions on doses for it;
- Coriander juice - a well-known culinary herb has long been famous for its healing effect on the body: it lowered blood glucose levels, removed toxins, was an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent, improved intestinal motility and digestion. But it also has a downside. Hypotension, pregnancy, lactation, gastrointestinal ulcers, thrombophlebitis - diagnoses in which it can cause harm. You should reduce sugar with coriander juice, taking these features into account;
- zucchini juice is a universal and harmless vegetable with rare exceptions. It improves appetite, coats the mucous membranes of the digestive organs well, eliminates swelling, helps in the fight against excess weight if fat deposits are concentrated in the waist area, increases hemoglobin levels and vascular elasticity. Zucchini juice is very popular among people on weight loss diets. And yet, you should not abuse it, because it can significantly loosen the stool, disrupt the water-salt balance. Its glycemic index is 15, this is a low indicator, but the volume, over 400 ml per day should not be exceeded.
If any of the listed juices is unacceptable in taste, it can be combined with others, for example, vegetable with fruit, creating delicious cocktails. The addition of "green" from parsley, dill, cilantro is especially useful. This increases the useful components, while reducing carbohydrates.
What juices should not be drunk if you have diabetes?
Industrial juice production technologies consist of several stages: producing a concentrate by evaporating water, and then restoring it. Such a product contains a high concentration of sugar, which is unacceptable for diabetics. You also cannot drink natural juices from sweet fruits: peach, apricot, grapes.
