Sonne dysentery is the most common form of dysentery in Russia; a total of 36,092 people fell ill with shigellosis in 2006 and 31,632 people in 2007 (incidence rates of 25.1 and 22.1 per 100,000, respectively), with children under 17 accounting for more than half of those who fell ill (with incidence rates of 69.1 and 62.15 per 100,000, respectively).

Objectives of immunization against Sonne dysentery

Vaccination against Sonne dysentery is given to children from 3 years of age and adults. Primary vaccination against Sonne dysentery is recommended for:

  • workers of infectious disease hospitals and bacteriological laboratories;
  • persons employed in the field of public catering and public utilities;
  • children attending children's institutions and going to health camps;
  • persons traveling to regions with a high incidence of Sonne dysentery.

According to epidemiological indications, mass immunization of the population is carried out when there is a threat of an epidemic or outbreak (natural disasters, etc.). Vaccination against Sonne dysentery is carried out before the seasonal increase in the incidence of the disease. The Shigella vaccine is registered in Russia - purified lipopolysaccharide from the S. Sonei culture. Preservative - phenol. Administration of the vaccine after 2-3 weeks provides immunity to infection for 1 year. The drug efficiency coefficient is 92.4%. It is available in 1 ml ampoules in a package of 5 or 10 ampoules.

Sonne dysentery vaccine: dosage and method of administration

The Shigella vaccine is administered once, deeply subcutaneously or intramuscularly into the outer surface of the upper third of the shoulder. The dose for all ages is 0.5 ml (50 mcg). Revaccination against dysentery is carried out, if necessary, once a year with the same dose.

Side effects

Reactions are rare and weak: during the first day, redness and soreness at the injection site, temperature up to 37.6° (in 3-5% - within 24-48 hours), sometimes headache.
