Pathogenesis

To the brain, arterial blood comes from a pair of large vessels - the internal carotid artery and the vertebral artery. These vessels, in turn, are also paired: they supply blood to certain areas of the right and left cerebral hemispheres. The connecting portion of the branches of these arterial vessels is called the Willis circle. A circle is a vasculature that compensates for blood flow if any of the vessels ceases to function.
