Cough is a symptom of many diseases. But most often it manifests itself during colds and respiratory infections - that is, in conditions when the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract is irritated by sputum and inflammation. Cough can manifest itself in different ways, depending on whether sputum is formed and discharged. To eliminate the unpleasant symptom, a medication such as Gerbion is often prescribed, which will help with any respiratory problems. Gerbion for dry and wet cough is presented in the form of syrups, which can be offered to both adults and children.

Herbal preparations are often used to treat cough. Gerbion belongs to this category. Let's consider its features and principle of action.

There are several types of disorder, which differ in duration, strength, character, presence of sputum. To relieve painful symptoms, special drugs are used, most often syrups, which soften the mucous membrane and reduce its inflammation, help to liquefy sputum and facilitate its discharge.

Rules for choosing syrup

  1. In case of dry cough, severe inflammation and frequent coughing fits, mucolytics are necessary. The medicine suppresses the activity of pathogenic microorganisms, relieves irritation. It liquefies phlegm, prevents mucus stagnation and facilitates its removal.
  2. For wet cough, use medications with a softening and enveloping effect. They help restore the surface of the affected respiratory tract. They have expectorant and antiseptic properties, liquefy phlegm, and accelerate its removal from the body.

The most popular and not inferior in effectiveness to antibacterial drugs are herbal products. One of the most popular over-the-counter drugs is Gerbion syrups. They are produced for the treatment of dry and wet coughs and consist of natural components. The drugs are safe, have a minimum of contraindications and side effects. They are approved for use in the treatment of patients over two years of age.

Herbion cough syrup

One of the most popular medicines for eliminating cold symptoms is syrup. It is suitable for patients of all ages and is divided into several categories according to the following features:

  • Compound.
  • Features of coughing attacks.
  • General condition of the patient.
  • Age of the patient.

Before choosing a syrup, you should determine the severity of the disease and choose a method of treatment: relief of the painful condition or removal of phlegm. The safest are herbal preparations, which include Gerbion syrup.

Herbion has several types that suppress dry unproductive cough and promote mucus liquefaction, improving its expectoration. The combined natural composition provides a quick therapeutic effect.

Herbion primrose for cough

Herbion with primrose is a liquid extract from the rhizome of primrose and thyme plant. Additionally, there is levomenthol, a small amount of sucrose and methyl parahydroxybenzoate. The color of the syrup is brown.

A combined antitussive with herbal components. The main active ingredient is primrose root extract, which has a rich chemical composition: saponins, vitamin C, triterpene glycosides. The interaction of all substances provides an antitussive effect, increases bronchopulmonary secretion, liquefies and increases the volume of sputum, facilitating its removal. The active components form a protective film on the respiratory tract, which significantly reduces irritation of cough receptors.

The medicine also contains thyme extract. This component has a local antiseptic effect, relaxes the bronchial muscles, reduces the risk of bronchospasms, and reduces the viscosity of mucus. Thyme extract has an analgesic, antispasmodic, and diuretic effect. Another component of the syrup is menthol. It facilitates breathing, has an anti-inflammatory effect on the mucous membranes, and increases the effectiveness of other active components.

  • Indications for use: respiratory diseases with irritation of the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, obsessive dry and spasmodic cough, difficult expectoration. Painful condition with tracheitis and bronchitis, irritation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract by tobacco smoke and other substances, senile cough.

Herbion Mentomed is available in tablet form, with 18 lozenges per package.

  • Herbion with Icelandic moss consists of a thick extract of this plant. Additional ingredients are: sorbitol, xanthan gum, sodium benzoate, lemon flavoring and acid. The syrup has a brown tint and a specific taste.

Composition of Herbion syrup

The main advantage of Herbion cough medicines is their natural herbal composition. Today, there is a series of cough syrups that contain various medicinal components.

  • Icelandic Moss Syrup

Thick water extract of Icelandic moss consists of: polysaccharides (lichenin and isolichenin), bitter lichen acids. It also contains auxiliary substances: liquid sorbitol, xanthan gum, sodium benzoate, citric acid monohydrate and lemon flavoring.

The interaction of all components provides antitussive, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and immunostimulating effects. The components of Icelandic moss have enveloping properties, creating a protective film on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. Due to this, the cough reflex is reduced and irritation of inflamed tissues disappears.

  • Primrose syrup

The medicine has a combined composition: water extract of primrose and thyme herb, menthol. Additional components are: sucrose, propyl parahydroxybenzoate and methyl parahydroxybenzoate

The root of the primrose contains ascorbic acid, glycosides and saponins, which provide an antitussive effect and increase bronchopulmonary secretion. Thyme extract consists of essential oils, one of which is thymol. This substance has a local antiseptic effect, reduces the viscosity of sputum and the risk of bronchospasm. Menthol enhances the effect of thymol, and also has anti-inflammatory properties, making breathing easier.

  • Ivy syrup

Contains ivy leaf extract, which consists of a complex of biologically active components. It includes triterpene saponins and alpha-hederin. They reduce the viscosity of sputum and stimulate its removal from the body. The activity of plant components provides a mucolytic, bronchodilator and antispasmodic effect.

  • Plantain syrup

This medication has a combined composition: aqueous extract of the herb plantain lanceolate, aqueous extract of mallow flowers, vitamin C and auxiliary substances. The antitussive agent exhibits antibacterial and immunostimulating activity. The active components irritate the receptors of the gastrointestinal mucosa, stimulating the secretion of the bronchial glands (gastropulmonary reflex). Due to this, sputum is liquefied and its volume increases.

Pharmacodynamics

Plantain leaf and mallow flower have a mucous-enveloping effect, soothing the surface of the respiratory tract. The mucus present in the plants eliminates cough caused by the irritating effect of the inflammatory reaction on the tissues of the respiratory tract. The additional presence of vitamin C in the composition of Herbion improves the response of the immune system and accelerates the restoration of tissues damaged by inflammation.

Ivy has a pronounced mucolytic effect, and also acts as an antispasmodic and bronchodilator. The dry extract of the plant is represented by triterpene saponins (in particular, α-hederin and hederacoside). The drug helps to relax the bronchial walls, facilitate expectoration and coughing.

Primrose and thyme promote rapid discharge of thick mucus from the lumen of the bronchi. The rhizome of the primrose plant contains a large number of saponins, which are known for their expectorant (mucolytic) properties. Saponins have a stimulating effect on the receptor mechanism of the vagus nerve, located on the mucous tissue of the stomach. This allows the drug Gerbion to activate the so-called gastropulmonary reflex, due to which the formation of sputum is enhanced and expectoration is potentiated. Saponins also exhibit surface activity, promoting the formation of a monomolecular coating. This allows the substances to spread through the mucous tissues of the respiratory system, providing a local liquefying and sputum-removing effect.

Thyme has an antispasmodic and antiseptic effect and acts as a bronchodilator.

Icelandic moss has an antitussive, immunostimulating, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect. The basis of this effect is the presence of a large number of mucous substances in the plant in the form of polysaccharides (lichenin and isolichenin) and bitter lichen acids. Thanks to such substances, the drug has an enveloping effect on the upper respiratory tract: a kind of protective barrier is formed, protecting the mucous tissues from irritation. As a result, the manifestation of the cough reflex is reduced, dryness and irritation are softened. In addition to the respiratory tract, the drug envelops the surface of the nasopharynx and oral cavity, providing a local softening effect.

Pharmacokinetics

Herbion is a herbal-based product. It is extremely difficult to trace the kinetic properties of such a medicine, since it is impossible to accurately determine the most active natural substance that helps eliminate dry or wet cough - as a rule, the effect of the medicine as a whole is considered.

Some of the plant components act locally, some enter the general bloodstream, but it is not possible to accurately track the nuances of their absorption, distribution and metabolism.

Gerbion for cough for children

Parents are certainly concerned about the choice of medications to eliminate dry or wet cough in a small child. First of all, such medications should be as safe as possible, and no less effective. Is Gerbion one of these safe products?

Herbion syrups have an important feature: they are all made on the basis of plants that successfully eliminate cough and do not harm the small organism. Plantain, thyme, primrose, ivy and Icelandic moss are hypoallergenic plants that are often used in pediatric practice. Medicines with the listed components in the composition are not uncommon on pharmacy shelves.

Of course, the herbal origin of a medicine is not a reason to give it to a child without a doctor’s prescription.

The medicinal instructions state that Gerbion for dry and wet cough can be offered for treatment to children from 2 years of age. However, in some cases, pediatricians allow the use of the drug from the age of one year. This point should be clarified with a competent doctor - perhaps such an exception to the rules will be made on an individual basis.

Gerbion, the basis of which includes an extract from Icelandic moss, can be used for the therapy of one-year-old children. This point is clearly indicated in the annotation to the drug.

Use gerbion cough medicine during pregnancy

At the initial stage of pregnancy, Gerbion is not used, regardless of what kind of cough a woman has - dry or wet. Due to the insufficient volume of studies conducted, there is currently no clear certainty that this drug is completely safe for the developing fetus.

During the second and third trimesters, taking the medicinal syrup is possible, but only after carefully weighing the benefits and potential risks to the course of pregnancy and the intrauterine development of the baby. If such treatment is prescribed, it should be carried out only under the supervision of a doctor. In such a situation, Herbion for cough is taken in the minimum possible dosage.

If a woman is breastfeeding, she should refrain from taking the medication, as it contains potential allergens. It has been proven that the active components of Gerbion get into the mother's milk and can cause allergies in the baby. If treatment with the drug is inevitable, the baby is transferred to artificial formula.

Contraindications

Herbion syrups for dry cough are not recommended for use with wet cough, and vice versa. Before use, be sure to read the instructions for the drug and make sure that it is suitable for treatment.

Other possible contraindications include:

  • hypersensitivity and intolerance to the substances included in the drug Gerbion;
  • diseases in which the use of such syrups is prohibited (diabetes mellitus, lactase deficiency);
  • gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, acute form;
  • decompensated liver pathologies;
  • the initial period of gestation (first trimester);
  • cough associated with whooping cough.

Also, Gerbion syrup is not recommended for the treatment of dry and wet cough in children under 2 years of age.

Side effects gerbion cough medicine

When treating dry and wet cough with Gerbion syrups, side effects are rare. They are mainly expressed by signs of an allergic reaction, less often by dyspeptic symptoms in the form of nausea, loose stools, heartburn, etc.

After completion of treatment, side effects subside on their own, without additional medication.

trusted-source[ 7 ]

Overdose

Overdose cases are not common and are mainly associated with prolonged and uncontrolled use of Gerbion. In case of dry or wet cough, overdose is accompanied by the following symptoms:

  • severe paroxysmal nausea;
  • loose, frequent stools;
  • vomiting attacks;
  • fluctuations in blood sugar levels;
  • liver disorders;
  • rash on the body, itching.

To normalize the patient's condition, along with stopping the use of Gerbion, symptomatic treatment is prescribed.

Interactions with other drugs

  • Gerbion for dry cough is not taken in combination with antitussives and medications that suppress the formation of sputum secretions, because this creates problems with further coughing up of liquefied secretions.
  • Gerbion for wet cough is not combined with any antitussive agents that suppress the cough reflex.

No other drug interactions have been noted, however, when conducting combined treatment for several diseases, it is necessary to consult a doctor regarding the complex use of medications.

Reviews

If you look through all the patient reviews of Gerbion syrups, you can only be convinced of the effectiveness of this medication. Syrups help get rid of painful coughing fits, soothe mucous tissues, eliminate pain and sore throat, and facilitate the removal of mucus.

Gerbion is produced by a company that has been trusted by most medical professionals for many years. Such trust is not difficult to explain: the medicines produced by KRKA (Slovenia) are based on natural ingredients, and the environmental control of raw materials and finished products is constantly and strictly monitored.

The syrup form of Gerbion is perfect for treating cough in patients of all ages, including small children and elderly weakened patients: the medications do not contain aggressive chemical components or potent substances.

All medications representing Gerbion are relatively inexpensive. Therefore, they often become the first choice for eliminating unpleasant symptoms in the form of dry or wet cough.

In addition, most children willingly take Gerbion: the sweet medicine is affordable, helps quickly and efficiently, causes virtually no side effects and is well accepted by the human body (including patients suffering from long-term inflammatory diseases or those in the rehabilitation period).

Herbion cough analogues

It happens that the prescribed medicine is not available in the pharmacy, or for some reason its use is impossible. What is allowed to replace Gerbion?

Of course, it is better to ask the doctor who prescribed this medication about this issue. There are quite a lot of cough-relieving medications with similar composition and action, and the doctor can recommend the following replacement:

  • Bronchophyte is a syrup with a complex herbal composition, which is used to treat bronchopulmonary diseases that occur with difficult secretion of thick bronchial secretions. The drug can be used for bronchial asthma and bronchiectasis.
  • Prospan syrup based on ivy belongs to the category of mucolytics, secretolytics, antitussive drugs. It can be used to treat newborn children.
  • Plantain syrup is a domestic remedy that is successfully used to treat obsessive unproductive coughing fits of various origins.
  • Pectolvan Ivy is a medicine in the form of a syrup based on ivy leaf extract. Pectolvan is approved for use in children from one year of age.
  • Gederin Ivy is a similar herbal preparation to Gerbion with ivy extract, with a high content of biologically active substances. It is used from the age of 2.

The presented medications have much in common, but they also have distinctive features. It is better to get additional advice from a medical specialist, especially if Gerbion for dry and wet cough was prescribed to a child.
