Last reviewed: 04.07.2025

Discharge in men is observed quite often. In some cases, it is a sign indicating serious pathologies, while in others it can be a variant of the norm. In order not to panic in vain, and to take timely measures when such a need arises, it is necessary to understand the origin, it is useful to know the characteristics of discharge observed in various pathologies.
[ 1 ]
Causes masculine discharge
Discharges appear mainly in connection with the development of a venereal disease. This can also be facilitated by hidden infections of various types of neoplasms. Quite often they occur against the background of non-specific inflammation of the urogenital tract. It is also necessary to exclude the possibility of discharges appearing after an injury, medical manipulations, surgical interventions.
Risk factors
The risk group includes men who have undergone operations in the genitourinary system, have suffered an injury, as well as those who lead an immoral lifestyle or frequently change sexual partners. Men with chronic inflammatory processes in the genitourinary system, in other organs and systems are also at risk.
Pathogenesis
The pathogenesis is based on the formation of an excessive amount of exudate. The normal functioning of the glands is disrupted. This leads to the formation of a large amount of pathological fluid in the body, which is released to the outside or accumulates on the surface of the genitals. The amount varies widely and is determined for each person individually. Pathological ones are very diverse. The duration and amount are determined by the severity of the pathological process.

Epidemiology
According to statistics, normal discharge is observed in 100% of men. However, under the influence of various external and internal factors, it can change. Discharge of a pathological nature is observed in 42% of people against the background of venereal diseases, in 39% of people - with non-specific inflammations, in 9% - after operations and surgical interventions. In 10% - due to hidden infections, mental overstrain, fatigue and sexual overstimulation.
Symptoms
We can talk about pathological discharge when there is much more of it, and it differs in some parameters from those that accompany a man every day. They can be very unusual - from white, yellow to cloudy brown. They can vary significantly in consistency - from very liquid to excessively thickened. They can have a different smell: sour, putrid. They can be constant, some appear episodically. Some of them are associated with the process of emptying, and others are not. Exacerbations are possible after eating, drinking alcohol, hypothermia.
Normal discharge in men
Not all discharges are pathological. Some are considered natural, physiological, since they are secreted by the genitourinary organs and correspond to their functions.
It is necessary to distinguish natural biological fluids. Urine is quite easy to distinguish from other fluids. It is usually transparent, the color can vary within the yellow light spectrum. Urine is normally an odorless liquid.
The second component that should be distinguished is the prostate secretion. This is a white viscous liquid with a sharp odor. The odor is maintained by a substance called spermine. Ejaculate is a natural biological fluid that is formed by sperm ejected from the vas deferens. When sperm combines with the gland secretion, prostatic secretion is formed. As a result, the liquid becomes gray-white and turns into a mucous mass.
Normal secretions include fresh smegma, produced mainly by the preputial glands. It is produced systematically, and accumulates under the foreskin. Smegma is based on fats, bacterial particles, their metabolic products, and bacterial colonies. Its main function is to lubricate the skin and reduce friction between the skin of the foreskin and the head of the penis. The maximum activity of these glands occurs during puberty. With age, the secretion of this lubricant decreases sharply, and by old age it may completely disappear.
It is worth paying attention to transparent discharge, which is called urethrorrhea. The main synthesis occurs in the bulbourethral and urethral glands. Associated with sexual desire, and appear during sexual arousal. The main function is to lubricate the urogenital canal and improve the passage of sperm. The volume of such discharge can be different, determined by many factors. It can increase after a man has abstained from sexual intercourse for a long time.
Sometimes there are wet dreams, which are spontaneous releases of sperm. Such emissions can occur in the morning or during the day and are not connected with sexual intercourse or masturbation. They occur when the level of progesterone in the body increases sharply. Wet dreams are determined by how intense the man's sexual life is. Almost always accompanies boys in puberty, which is due to immaturity and hormonal instability. They also occur with rare sexual contacts.
It is also worth paying attention to prostatorrhea, which is secreted from the urethra and is represented by a transparent liquid. It can appear after heavy physical work and intense muscle tension. It can occur with constipation as a result of too weak motility. It can also be the result of voluntary, conscious retention of urine for a long time. The secreted secret contains a mixture of seminal fluid and prostate secretion. If the amount increases sharply and the liquid becomes cloudy, this may indicate the development of prostatitis.

First signs
The large volume of fluid that continues to be released even in the evening and at night attracts attention. Men do not normally experience such discharge. The unusual smell is alarming. Sometimes pain, stinging, and a burning sensation may join in.
But sometimes there are less obvious signs that are difficult to notice right away, but they are worth paying attention to. Mucus may appear during urination, which should not be normal. These discharges are usually easily removed during urination and do not require additional removal. But in the morning, such discharges can make themselves known, since they accumulate overnight. Their amount reaches such that a man immediately notices them. In addition, during the day, these discharges mix with urine, and visually their amount appears smaller.
Also, to detect such a liquid, you can conduct a small test: just after waking up in the morning, press the urogenital canal with light massaging movements, as a result of which liquid may come out. You also need to pay attention to your underwear: it must contain stains from the discharge of the urethra. The amount of liquid may increase after a holiday, a friendly party, if alcohol was consumed, spicy dishes, pickles, marinades were eaten.
It is also advisable to conduct a test to detect the first signs of discharge. For this, it is recommended to collect the morning portion of urine in a separate sterile container and monitor the behavior and characteristics of the fluid. Also, additional fluid discharge may be indicated by stratification of urine and the formation of flakes in it.

Development of inflammatory processes of a non-specific nature. Most often, they are not associated with infectious or viral diseases, but with the microbiocenosis of the human body. It is activated and causes inflammation if problems arise, the immune system decreases, and the body's non-specific defense capabilities fall.
Most often, the causative agents of such diseases are staphylococci and streptococci. Dysbacteriosis may develop, in which the number of representatives of normal microflora is suppressed, and their place is colonized by other microorganisms. Fungal diseases, in particular, candidiasis, often develop according to this principle.
The trigger for the development of a non-specific inflammatory process is hypothermia, exposure to stressors, physical and mental fatigue. A strong infectious process that has passed along the ascending path can increase the discharge. Pathogenic microflora develops first in the bladder, then it penetrates into the ureters, kidneys. The infection can also develop along the descending path. Kidney diseases develop. From them, the infection penetrates into the ureters, descends into the genital tract, and causes non-specific inflammation.
Discharge during thrush in men
Color - white, can be curdled. This is due to the development of pathogenic microflora, in particular, bacterial and fungal. Thrush is often caused by fungi of the genus Candida, so it is also called candidiasis. With intensive reproduction of the fungus, a white coating is formed. When a large amount of fungus accumulates, the degree of seeding becomes quite high, the fungus accumulates in the form of conglomerates that are visible to the naked eye. They appear as white flakes.
Usually, with thrush, white spots are accompanied by discomfort, an unpleasant feeling. With deep tissue damage by fungi, pain in the anal area is possible. With severe damage and a high degree of bacterial contamination, inflammation of the anus occurs. Such uncontrolled growth of fungus occurs with reduced immunity. Such pathology is especially often observed during antibiotic therapy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Thrush in men is extremely rarely transmitted sexually. It is usually a consequence of a violation of the normal microflora inside one's own body. But there is a high probability of transmission of Candida sexually from a man to a woman.
Discharge with chlamydia in men
With chlamydia, discharge is a natural phenomenon. The disease affects the genitourinary system. The disease can proceed covertly. It often happens that a person does not even suspect for a long time that he was infected with chlamydia. It develops asymptomatically, without causing any discomfort to a person. It is activated, as a rule, against the background of reduced immunity and a weakened body.
It is often detected when the degree of damage is quite high. It cannot be detected by conventional methods. For detection, it is advisable to conduct an analysis for latent infections. A smear is also taken, in which the presence of a microorganism is determined by PCR methods. In this case, a large number of leukocytes are also detected in the smear, which indicates an inflammatory process. The ELISA method is used less often. Its efficiency and information content are much lower. Thus, the reliability of PCR is 95-97%, while the efficiency of ELISA is approximately 70-75%.
Infection occurs mainly through sexual intercourse. Infection through everyday life is impossible, since the bacteria quickly die in the environment. The latent period is quite long: 3-4 weeks, sometimes more. Chlamydia is a serious infectious disease that is quite difficult to get rid of. The causative agent of this disease is chlamydia, which is an intracellular obligate parasite that multiplies and develops inside the host cell, gradually destroying it from the inside. It is precisely because the pathogen is an intracellular parasite that the bacteria are so dangerous. It is difficult to diagnose and treat, and is classified as a latent infection.
There are currently no diagnostic methods that allow for intracellular detection of parasites. The presence of chlamydial infection is judged by indirect laboratory methods, in particular by the number of antibodies and antigens. Treatment is also not effective enough due to the fact that drugs are not able to penetrate into the cell and do not pass through the cell membrane.
Thus, chlamydia has protected itself twice. On the one hand, it has a reliable own defense system in the form of a dense cell membrane, polysaccharides that are part of the cell. They provide it with high penetrating ability, due to which it can penetrate into the cell, as well as high resistance to antibacterial drugs. On the other hand, due to the fact that the chlamydial cell is inside the host cell, it acquires additional protection from the effects of the human immune system, which simply does not recognize the pathogen as a foreign agent, accordingly, an immune response does not occur. Antibiotics and modern antibacterial drugs are not able to penetrate the cell membrane, accordingly, they do not affect chlamydia.
Chlamydia is dangerous due to its complications, especially the appearance of epididymitis (inflammation of the testicles). It is a common cause of infertility.
Treatment mainly consists of antibacterial therapy, taking new generation antibiotics. Additionally, immunotherapy and physiotherapy may be prescribed. Prevention consists of avoiding casual sexual relations. It is not recommended to change sexual partners frequently. It is also necessary to periodically undergo preventive medical examinations, take tests, especially after questionable relationships.

Discharge with gonorrhea in men
Gonorrhea is always accompanied by discharge. It affects the genitals. It is impossible to become infected through everyday means, since it dies outside the body. The danger lies in complications, the possibility of infecting a woman.
The incubation period is quite short. The main symptoms are white-yellow discharge and pain. Serious consequences may develop: gonococcal pharyngitis (an infectious and inflammatory process in the throat. Infection from the genitourinary tract can be transmitted to the rectum. Other infectious lesions also develop. Ultimately, infertility usually develops. Of particular danger is the generalization of the infection, which affects other vital organs. Diagnosis is made using a general smear, in which pathogens are detected using the PCR method. Bacteriological culture may be required for greater accuracy. Treatment is antibacterial. Antibiotics are prescribed. Gonorrhea often develops together with chlamydial infection.

Discharge in men with trichomoniasis
It is transmitted sexually, only during traditional sexual intercourse. The pathogens - trichomonads adapt well to the external space, if there is moisture there. Therefore, there is a possibility of transmitting the infection through rags, a humid environment. It manifests itself with white discharge and mucus. Pain and burning appear. Detection consists of microscopy of a smear. If necessary, bacteriological culture is carried out. It is treated with special antiparasitic and antifungal agents. In case of a long-term or chronic course of the disease, combination therapy is used, which includes immunocorrection, vitamin therapy, physiotherapy. During treatment, both sexual partners must be treated, even if the second is not sick, or the symptoms of the disease are not manifested.
Discharge during prostatitis in men
With the development of prostatitis, intense white discharge appears. If the disease is chronic, they can be yellow or green. Often, the discharge is accompanied by a violation of urination and a weak erection. In critical cases, anuria is observed - there is no urine output at all, impotence.
Discharge with ureaplasmosis in men
Ureaplasmas are microscopic bacteria that normally inhabit the human urinary tract. Previously, they were classified as mycoplasmas, but over time they were classified as a separate genus. The classification is based on their ability to break down urea. Microorganisms belong to opportunistic forms. In normal, moderate quantities, they are part of the normal microflora of the urogenital tract, providing protection against other pathogenic microorganisms.
With reduced immunity, weakening and overfatigue of the body, their degree of contamination increases sharply and significantly exceeds the norm.
In women, the number of ureaplasmas is significantly higher than in girls who are not sexually active. Thus, in girls they are found only in 5-15% of cases.
Infection can occur during childbirth, so ureaplasmosis must be treated, even if the disease does not cause discomfort and is asymptomatic. Self-healing is possible in men, which never happens in women. Treatment requires long-term antibiotic therapy.
Discharge in syphilis in men
Syphilis is considered a rather serious venereal pathological condition. It is caused by pale treponema. The incubation period is from 1 to 6 months, and significantly depends on the lifestyle and the state of the man's immunity. It is accompanied by abundant white discharge, less often they take the form of pus. There is severe itching, redness. Later, the skin becomes covered with erosions and a small red rash, spreading throughout the genitals. It is dangerous because it can affect the insides and skin, progress. It even ends in death if left untreated. The man infects his partner, so both need to be treated.
Discharge in HIV in men
HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS. The body loses its ability to protect itself from foreign agents (viruses, bacteria). As a result, a person becomes defenseless, susceptible to infection. The body is unable to cope with even the simplest infection, since lymphocytes, which are the main protective cells of the immune system, are damaged. Death can occur even as a result of the simplest cold, which the body cannot cope with.
This disease is characterized by a latent course and a long incubation period. A person may not know that he is infected, however, the disease develops in his blood, the virus multiplies, and the decrease in immunity continues. The disease can manifest itself suddenly. Also, being a carrier of the virus, a man infects sexual partners.
The disease is transmitted through blood (during blood transfusion, transplantation, during surgical and other manipulations using non-sterile instruments), sexually. Less often, the disease is transmitted transplacentally or during childbirth from mother to child, with breast milk. The incubation period for this disease can range from 2-3 months to 10 years.
The disease manifests itself by loss of appetite, sudden weight loss, weakness, increased fatigue, and sweating. The person is ill for a long time and is often exposed to colds. A common cold can last for several months.
Discharges are usually a consequence of decreased immunity, against which an infection joins in and its intensive growth occurs. Thrush and various dysbacterioses can develop. There is a wide variety of discharges - from white to brown-green, purulent.
Discharge with herpes in men
Herpes is a viral disease in which the pathogen primarily affects the lymph and accumulates in the lymphatic tissue and nodes. It can persist in the blood for a long time, creating a viral load on the body, undermining the protective mechanisms.
There are several types of herpes, including one that is sexually transmitted. As it progresses, an inflammatory process develops in the genital area, and profuse discharge occurs. Most often, they are mucous, less often - purulent. The cause of the discharge can only be accurately determined by the results of a virological study, which will show the presence of the virus in the blood and its exact concentration.

Discharge in diabetes in men
Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common metabolic disorders. As a result, a stable decrease in the immune system develops. On this basis, various pathologies can develop, including in the urinary system. Dysbacteriosis is often observed. They lead to the development of inflammation and fluid secretion.
Forms
In men, there are three main types of discharge: spermatorrhea, hematorrhea, and prostatorrhea.
Spermatorrhea is the secretion of sperm that flows out of the body passively. There is no feeling of sexual arousal or orgasm. The fluid flows out freely, spontaneously. The secretions occur without sexual intercourse or masturbation. Usually, this is a pathological phenomenon that is a consequence of a spinal injury, inflammation, stress, overexertion, overfatigue, and other pathologies of the genitals.
Hematorrhea refers to bloody discharge from the urogenital tract. It is most often observed against the background of injuries, during bougienage, scraping from the membrane. Usually such bleeding is minor.
They can also occur with small stones in the kidneys. This is called renal colic, and it most often manifests itself as pain when urinating. Glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis, edema can also provoke the development of discharge from the genitourinary tract of a man. Protein appears in the urine, blood pressure increases.
Prostatorrhea is a prostate secretion that flows out spontaneously.
Lubrication in men
Lubrication is secreted, ensuring unimpeded passage of spermatozoa, ejaculate through the vas deferens. Often, a large amount of lubricant is secreted in adolescence, which is explained by the immaturity of the reproductive system, endocrine disorders, and irregular sexual intercourse.

White discharge in men
They can appear for various reasons. Most often they occur as a result of the development of an inflammatory process, the spread of infection. Usually the white color is due to the accumulation of a large number of leukocytes, which indicate the development of inflammation.
White color indicates bacterial discharge. They can also appear with a high degree of contamination with bacterial microflora and its dead particles, combined into conglomerates. They can be a consequence of intensive recovery processes that lead to the accumulation of epithelial particles. Less often - a sign of candidiasis, which grows in the form of a thin white coating. They can be mucous or purulent. Pus occurs in advanced pathology, when immune factors begin to intensively synthesize various protective factors. Mucus - with many infectious inflammations of the urinary tract, the ingress of a foreign body, infection, after an injury, failure to comply with hygiene rules. Often occurs after major operations, antibiotic therapy, chemotherapy. In other words, against the background of reduced immunity, resistance, fatigue.
Clear discharge in men
Usually not considered as a pathology. Most often, the cause is sexual arousal. The fluid is produced by the urethral glands. It can be released during defecation, which is also within the normal range.
The amount is individual and is determined by the physiological characteristics of the body, age, endocrine background. Also largely depends on the period of sexual abstinence. In adolescents, the maximum amount, in old age they are reduced to a minimum or completely absent. Contains spermatozoa, so it is necessary to take into account that this fluid can fertilize the egg.
If a man's discharge acquires an unusual shade or a specific color, you need to see a doctor as soon as possible, which will allow you to diagnose a serious disease that needs to be treated immediately.
