Enterofuril is a drug from the group of antimicrobials; used in the treatment of intestinal infections.

The component nifuroxazide is an antimicrobial substance, a derivative of nitrofuran. In therapeutic portions, nifuroxazide almost does not inhibit healthy intestinal microflora, does not lead to the appearance of resistant bacterial forms, and besides, it does not cause cross-resistance of microbes against other antibacterial drugs. The medicinal effect develops already in the first hours after the start of therapy.[1]

Indications Enterofuril

It is used for acute diarrhea of an infectious nature.

Release form

The release of the therapeutic substance is realized in capsules with a volume of 0.1 (10 pieces inside a cell pack, 3 packs inside a box) and 0.2 g (8 capsules inside a blister pack, 1-2 packs inside a box).

Pharmacodynamics

The principle of the medicinal effect is not fully defined. The antiparasitic and antimicrobial activity of nifuroxazide may be related to the presence of an amino group. Local action without penetration into tissues and organs makes nifuroxazide unique in comparison with other derivatives of nitrofuran, since this antidiarrheal drug does not have a systemic effect.

Enterofuril demonstrates the effect of relatively gram-negative and -positive microbes: Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella, pyogenic streptococcus, Salmonella and Escherichia coli.

Pharmacokinetics

When taken orally, nifuroxazide is almost not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and does not pass into tissues with organs, 99% of the drug remains in the intestine.

The metabolic processes of nifuroxazide are realized inside the intestine, approximately 20% of the substance is excreted unchanged.

Nifuroxazide with its metabolic products are excreted along with feces. The rate of excretion is determined by the amount of drug used and gastrointestinal motility. In general, the excretion of nifuroxazide is rather slow, the component remains inside the gastrointestinal tract for a long time.

Dosing and administration

Capsules must be taken orally, without reference to food intake.

For adolescents from 15 years old and adults: 0.2 g (1 capsule with a volume of 0.2 g or 2 capsules with a volume of 0.1 g), 4 times a day. It is allowed to use no more than 0.8 g of nifuroxazide per day.

Children over 6 years of age: 2 capsules with a volume of 0.1 g, 3-4 times a day. A maximum of 0.6-0.8 g of nifuroxazide can be taken per day.

Therapy can last a maximum of 7 days (release form 0.1 g) or 3 days (release form 0.2 g).

  • Application for children

The drug in the form of a release of 0.1 g is prescribed for children over the age of 6 (a suspension of the drug is used for a child under this age). 0.2 g capsules can be used in adolescents over the age of 15.

Use Enterofuril during pregnancy

There is no reliable information regarding the possible fetotoxic and teratogenic effects when using nifuroxazide in pregnant women. Because of this, the drug is not prescribed during the specified period.

Enterofuril can be used for short-term therapy for hepatitis B.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated to prescribe in case of severe intolerance to nifuroxazide, other derivatives of 5-nitrofuran or other elements of the drug.
