Diseases and conditions in which serum testosterone concentrations change

Testosterone is elevated in the following conditions:

  • Uremia.
  • Myotonic dystrophy.
  • Liver failure.
  • Klinefelter syndrome.
  • Cryptorchidism.
  • Primary and secondary hypogonadism.
  • Kallmann syndrome.
  • Use of barbiturates, clomiphene, estrogens, gonadotropin, oral contraceptives.
  • Idiopathic hirsutism.

Testosterone is reduced in the following conditions:

  • Men with XYY karyotype.
  • Stein-Leventhal syndrome.
  • Feminizing testicle syndrome.
  • Precocious puberty in boys.
  • Virilizing luteoma.
  • Tumors of the adrenal cortex.
  • Extragonadal tumors in men, arrhenoblastoma.
  • Use of androgens, dexamethasone, diethylstilbestrol, digoxin, ethanol, halothane, spironolactone, phenothiazines.
  • Free testosterone in serum.
