Diseases and conditions, in which the concentration of prolactin in the blood serum changes

Prolactinum is increased at:

  • Prolactin-producing pituitary tumors
  • Idiopathic hyperlactinemia (in women - menstruation and infertility disorder, in men - impotence)
  • Hypofunction of the thyroid gland
  • Renal insufficiency
  • Breast damage
  • Injury, surgery
  • Shingles
  • The use of phenothiazine, haloperidol, imipramine, methyldoph, large doses of estrogens, oral contraceptives, arginine, opiates, postinsulin hypoglycemia

Prolactin is downgraded when:

  • Surgical removal of the pituitary gland
  • X-ray therapy
  • Treatment with bromocriptine
  • Application of T 4
  • Factors causing hyperglycemia
