Causes of serum apolipoprotein A1 elevation and lowering

The concentration of apo-A 1 increases with familial hyper-a-lipoproteinemia, pregnancy, estrogen treatment, alcohol abuse, and physical activity.
Determination of apo-A 1 alone provides little information for assessing lipoprotein metabolism disorders, so it is advisable to simultaneously determine the concentration of apo-B1 and calculate the apo-B1/apo-A 1 ratio. Normally, it is less than 1.
Low values of apo-A 1 concentration in the blood serum can be detected in Tangier disease, familial hypo-a-lipoproteinemia, DLP types I and V, diabetes mellitus type 1, cholestasis, hemodialysis, infectious diseases, as well as the use of a number of drugs (diuretics, beta-blockers, androgens, glucocorticosteroids, cyclosporine).
