Candida albicans antigen is normally absent in blood serum.

The test is used for direct detection of candidal antigen in the blood of patients with invasive candidiasis. This test is more specific than antibody detection. A value of more than 2 ng of serum candidal antigen (mannan) in ELISA suggests invasive candidiasis. The sensitivity of the method in cancer patients is 65-70% with a specificity of 100%. To detect candidal antigen in the blood serum, the test is recommended to be performed at least 2 times a week.
