Reference values (norm) for apo-A 1 levels in blood serum: men - 81-169 mg/dl (0.81-1.69 g/l); women - 80-214 mg/dl (0.80-2.14 g/l).

Each primary lipoprotein is characterized by the presence of an individual protein (apolipoprotein) inherent only to it. Apolipoproteins are designated by Latin letters, and some of them represent a family of proteins and are additionally designated by numbers (for example, apo-A 1, apo-A 2, etc.). Apo-A 1 is called the "active alternator". It participates in the transport of triglycerides and cholesterol, activates lecithin-cholesterol acetyltransferase, facilitating the reverse transport of cholesterol from the periphery (including from the vascular wall) to the liver. Apo-A 1 is called the "alternator" because after entering the circulation as part of chylomicrons, it quickly enters HDL and is incorporated into these particles. When apo-A 1 detachment from chylomicrons is impaired, HDL levels decrease and TG levels increase, which contributes to the development of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Since apo-A 1 is the main apolipoprotein of a-LP, determining its concentration specifies the degree of risk of developing coronary heart disease in a patient. a-LP promote the removal of cholesterol from the vascular wall, thereby preventing the development of atherosclerosis.
