For adequate assessment of the severity of the process, correct choice of the treatment method and accurate prosthetics of the disease course, it is of great importance to study complaints and anamnesis. It is necessary to accurately determine the form (intermittent or persistent) of allergic rhinitis for each patient. The main complaints of patients: nasal discharge, nasal congestion and sneezing attacks. To establish a diagnosis, it is necessary to have two or more symptoms lasting at least 1 hour per day for a long time.

Depending on the prevalence of certain symptoms of allergic rhinitis, two variants of the clinical course of the disease can be distinguished: the so-called exudative and obstructive.

Features of clinical manifestations of exudative and obstructive allergic rhinitis

Symptom of diseases Exudative rhinitis Obstructive rhinitis
Sneezing Often, in fits and starts Little or no effect
Nasal discharge Watery Thick
Itchy nose Often Absent
Nasal congestion Not constant Constant and strongly expressed
Conjunctivitis Often Absent
Cytological dynamics of manifestations During the day the condition worsens, at night it improves Usually the pain is uniform, possibly worsening at night

Allergic inflammation is not limited to the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity. Quite often, patients suffering from allergic rhinitis are found to have foci of chronic infection and other diseases of the upper respiratory tract (sinusitis, polyposis of the nasal cavity in combination with polypous sinusitis and, as a rule, maxillary ethmoiditis, otitis media).
