The 20% solution is packaged in containers of 30 or 100 ml. A special dispenser or measuring container is supplied in the kit. The packaging is cardboard.
The active substance of the drug is levocarnitine. The excipients include methyl- and propylparaben, sucrose, sorbitol, water and flavorings.
The drug is produced by the Irish company Chanel Medical.
Pharmacodynamics
The active substance of the drug is a natural analogue of B vitamins. This substance is produced by the liver, kidneys and brain tissue using amino acids in combination with iron and ascorbic acid. Blood serum contains it in free form or in the form of acylcarnitine esters.
The action of the drug is based on improving the metabolic processes of fatty acids in cardiac tissues, liver, and muscle fibers. Due to the effect of levocarnitine, residual metabolic products and toxic substances are removed from the cytoplasm, the course of metabolism improves, functional capacity increases, development accelerates, muscle mass increases and the total number of lipids in adipocytes decreases, the main metabolic processes in thyrotoxicosis are stabilized. Signs of mechanical and psychological overloads are weakened, ischemic phenomena in the heart muscle are reduced, the amount of cholesterol in the bloodstream decreases, immunity is activated at the cellular level, and concentration of attention increases.
The effect of levocarnitine is also used to eliminate functional disorders of the central nervous system in a number of patients with chronic alcohol dependence during withdrawal syndrome.
During significant physical exertion and active sports, endurance increases, the muscular system becomes less sensitive to pain, and the function of skeletal muscles is activated.
Pharmacokinetics
When taken orally, the drug is perfectly absorbed from the digestive system into the bloodstream. The maximum amount of the active drug is detected in the blood after 3 hours. The therapeutically necessary amount of levocarnitine in the blood can be maintained for a long time - up to 9 hours.
The drug is metabolized by forming chemical compounds of the acyl group. Excretion from the body occurs mainly through the urinary system. The half-life of the drug when taken orally can range from 3 to 6 hours, depending on the dosage of the drug taken.
Dosing and administration
The dosage and possible duration of taking Agvantar is prescribed by the doctor on an individual basis, taking into account age characteristics and the specific disease.
The drug is usually taken orally half an hour before meals. For more accurate dosing, it is convenient to use the dispenser or measuring container included in the package.
Adult patients take the drug in an initial dosage of 5 ml per day. The amount of the drug taken is gradually increased, taking into account the patient's individual response to the drug. The average dosage for an adult is determined to be from 5 to 15 ml per day, can be divided into 2-3 doses. The maximum daily intake of the drug by an adult patient is 25-30 ml.
In childhood, the drug is used based on a daily dosage of 50 mg per kilogram of the child's weight. Agvantar is prescribed before feeding the baby, the drug can be diluted with a 5% glucose solution, and also added to jelly, compotes, juices and other sweet drinks. The average dosage for children is determined taking into account age and body weight:
- for newborn babies – 0.5 ml 2-3 times a day;
- for children under one year old – 0.5-1 ml 2-3 times a day;
- for children from one to three years old – 1-2 ml three times a day;
- for children from 4 to 6 years old – 2-3 ml three times a day;
- children from seven to 11 years old – 2.5-4 ml three times a day;
- 12 years and older – 4-5 ml three times a day.
The maximum daily dose is 15 ml. Duration of treatment is from one to three months, depending on the indications. If necessary, the therapeutic course is repeated. In some cases (with a lack of carnitine in the body), Agvantar is used until the signs of deficiency of the substance are completely eliminated.
