White discharge during pregnancy can cause great concern in a woman. There are several reasons for this type of discharge. First of all, such discharge is directly related to pregnancy, since the body at this time is doing a colossal job of preparing for bearing and giving birth to a child.

As doctors explain, with the onset of pregnancy, a mucous plug appears on the cervix, which prevents infection from entering from the outside, due to which a woman's discharge may increase slightly. At the same time, discharge is considered completely normal and should not cause panic in a pregnant woman. Natural discharge during pregnancy is considered mucous, transparent or milky white, without a specific odor. Discharge, in principle, bothers the woman, does not irritate the vaginal mucosa. If personal hygiene is observed, such discharge is almost imperceptible. Discharge after childbirth goes away on its own, without any additional treatment.

Before labor, the amount of discharge may increase. This is also a natural process that precedes labor. If the discharge is painless, then you should not worry about it, the time for the baby to be born has not yet come. But if moderate transparent discharge is observed for several hours, most likely, the water has begun to break, in this case it is better to go to the doctor immediately.

Discharges that occur against the background of fungal, bacterial or infectious diseases are considered pathological. If such discharge appears, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible and begin appropriate treatment. If the discharge has a greenish, gray (or any other) tint, an unpleasant odor, you should consult a doctor and, if necessary, take tests. Such discharge is typical of yeast infection, bacterial vaginitis, trichomoniasis. Timely treatment reduces the risk of developing serious consequences for both the woman herself and her future child. Self-medication during pregnancy is prohibited, since in order to correctly identify the causative agent of the disease, it is necessary to take a smear and then carry out appropriate treatment taking into account the woman's condition and the pregnancy period.

Causes of white discharge during pregnancy

A healthy cervix produces a secretion necessary for renewing the mucous membrane, moisturizing the vaginal walls, and maintaining the microflora in the genitals. When the nature of the discharge changes (consistency, odor, etc.), the possible cause may be hormonal influence or infection.

The infection also provokes white discharge from the genitals during pregnancy, and the disease negatively affects both the general condition of the woman and the health of the future child. With the onset of pregnancy, a woman's resistance to any diseases decreases, in particular, to those that are sexually transmitted.

Up to 12 weeks, the woman's body is strongly influenced by progesterone, which is necessary to maintain pregnancy. From the thirteenth week of pregnancy, discharge may increase, it is transparent, odorless, does not cause itching, burning or discomfort.

A pregnant woman must pay attention to the color, consistency, and amount of discharge, as this will help to identify pathological processes in the genitals in time. If the nature of the discharge has changed, the cause may be hormonal surges in the body, diseases of the reproductive system, infection, etc. The most common cause of discharge in pregnant women is candidiasis (thrush). In this case, the discharge has a cheesy consistency, they are abundant, with a beer smell. The possibility of the development of other opportunistic flora of the genitals is also not excluded.

During pregnancy, cervical erosion sometimes develops, and a woman may notice discharge of a yellow to brownish hue. If symptoms of erosion appear, it is necessary to inform the doctor about it.

In pregnant women, white or pinkish discharge appears during the period when menstruation should have begun. The discharge has no odor, does not cause anxiety or discomfort. If such discharge is accompanied by pain in the lower abdomen, you should tell your doctor about it as soon as possible, since such conditions may indicate various pathologies (ectopic pregnancy, spontaneous miscarriage, etc.).

White discharge without odor during pregnancy

In the first weeks of pregnancy, when a woman does not even know about her condition, discharge from the genitals may appear. Even abundant white or transparent discharge is considered a natural reaction of the body to the hormonal changes that have begun.

In addition to changes in hormonal levels, discharge may appear due to a mucus plug formed in the cervix, which serves as a barrier to infections. The formation of the plug may be accompanied by heavy discharge in a woman.

Natural white discharge during pregnancy, which is not a cause for concern, is mucous, without various impurities (lumps, flakes, etc.), the color can be either transparent or milky white, without a characteristic odor.

With such physiological discharge, a woman should carefully observe the hygiene of the genitals (wear comfortable underwear made of natural fabrics, regularly wash the genitals, use daily pads, etc.).

Thick white discharge during pregnancy

The first 3 months of pregnancy are strongly influenced by the hormone progesterone. At first, it is produced by the corpus luteum, which is formed after the rupture of the follicle. After the egg is fertilized, the corpus luteum increases in size and produces progesterone in fairly large quantities. Progesterone helps to keep the embryo in the uterus. It is under the influence of this hormone that thick mucus is formed in the cervix (plug). Thick white discharge during pregnancy appears from the genitals as a result of a large amount of progesterone in the woman's body. Usually, a woman notices white or transparent mucous clots on the lower part of the vagina, which are released asymptomatically, without causing discomfort. Such odorless discharge and discomfort in the genitals should not cause concern in a woman, especially in the first trimester.

In the second trimester, the fetus is already firmly attached inside the uterus, the placenta is almost mature, and active production of another hormone, estrogen, begins. At this stage of pregnancy, the uterus develops, which is constantly increasing, and the mammary glands, which are preparing to produce milk. Estrogen often causes a woman to have whitish or colorless discharge. Such discharge is also not related to pathology. But if the discharge acquires an unpleasant odor, changes color, or discomfort in the genitals begins to bother (itching, burning, etc.), you need to tell your gynecologist about this in order to prevent the severe development of serious diseases.

White liquid discharge during pregnancy

Liquid white discharge during pregnancy has many causes, in particular, it can be a natural process that does not require any intervention. In some cases, even a doctor may find it difficult to distinguish normal discharge from pathological ones.

The appearance of discharge in the second trimester of pregnancy also occurs under the influence of hormones. In the first months, the pregnant woman's body is affected by progesterone, which provokes thick mucus-like discharge of a thick mucous nature. After the 12th week, the woman again undergoes hormonal changes in the body, estrogen comes to the fore, which causes a change in the nature of the discharge. Under the influence of this hormone, the woman begins to have thin discharge from the vagina. Especially abundant discharge can be immediately before childbirth. When the discharge that appears has no odor, they do not cause discomfort (itching, burning, etc.), then they are a natural manifestation of the body's reaction to pregnancy.

The problem in this case is that discharge, no matter what it is caused by, is a good environment for the reproduction of pathogenic microorganisms, so a woman, especially a pregnant woman, needs to carefully monitor her hygiene (wash herself once a day, use special products for intimate hygiene, regularly change underwear, use pads that are changed every 5-6 hours).

Liquid discharge that has a specific smell (resembling fish) and is quite abundant may indicate bacterial vaginosis or a violation of the vaginal microflora. Diseases can develop against the background of weak immunity, hormones, which provokes the growth of pathogenic microflora in the mucous membrane.

Bacterial vaginosis is usually not accompanied by any symptoms, in rare cases a woman is bothered by slight itching or burning. The disease is dangerous because some factors (for example, an even greater weakening of the immune system) can provoke an inflammatory process, so it is necessary to treat the disease.

One of the reasons for liquid discharge is sexually transmitted infections and various infectious and inflammatory diseases. Most of these diseases at the beginning of their development proceed without any special symptoms. It is for this reason that doctors recommend planning pregnancy in order to promptly identify and treat all existing diseases of the reproductive system.

In pregnant women, when immunity is reduced, there is a surge in hormones, infectious and inflammatory diseases can enter the acute phase, and various discharges from the genitals are possible, in particular liquid ones.

For example, with gonorrhea, which occurs in a latent form, a woman begins to have liquid discharge with a yellow-green tint, which may indicate the onset of inflammation. Chronic trichomoniasis, which occurs without pronounced symptoms, is accompanied by abundant foamy discharge of a yellowish tint during an exacerbation. Most infectious diseases are accompanied by a burning sensation, itching, and in some cases, pain during urination.

Yellow-white discharge during pregnancy

Yellow discharge from the genitals always indicates a pathological process. The discharge may not cause any discomfort to a woman. If there is a dark yellow discharge with an unpleasant odor, accompanied by pain, itching of the genitals, you need to visit a gynecologist as soon as possible and take the necessary tests.

There are several reasons why yellow-white discharge appears during pregnancy. First of all, it is any inflammatory process that has worsened during pregnancy. With weakened immunity, pathogenic bacteria penetrate the vagina, multiply and lead to inflammation of the genitals. It is necessary to react to such discharge very quickly, since it can lead to spontaneous termination of pregnancy.

Dark yellow discharge may indicate the occurrence of an allergic reaction, which can be provoked by intimate hygiene products, underwear, etc. Also, some microorganisms cause yellowish discharge.

If the yellow discharge over time acquires a greenish tint, this indicates more serious diseases, such as venereal diseases, which are also accompanied by pain when urinating, itching, and burning.

Bright yellow discharge from the genitals indicates inflammation of the fallopian tubes, ovaries, or a bacterial infection.

Yellow discharge with an unpleasant, sharp odor occurs with inflammation of the uterus or appendages. Inflammation of the internal organs of a pregnant woman is a rather dangerous disease, since in most cases the pregnancy ends in a spontaneous miscarriage.

White cheesy discharge during pregnancy

Some women notice white discharge during pregnancy, which has a cheesy consistency and a sour smell. This kind of discharge indicates a disease that often affects women, not only pregnant women - thrush or, scientifically, vaginal candidiasis. Also, symptoms of thrush are severe itching, burning, swelling of the genitals, which can intensify at night, after sex or hygiene procedures.

A pregnant woman's hormonal background changes completely, the acidity in the vaginal mucosa decreases, and the body's defense reaction weakens. All this contributes to the proliferation of fungi that are present in the vaginal environment. As a result, thrush develops. The disease usually worsens during pregnancy and is very difficult to treat.

If a woman is bothered by itching, burning and cheesy green discharge with an unpleasant odor, it is necessary to urgently go to the hospital. In this case, the discharge may be a sign of infection or inflammation of the genitals, which can end in spontaneous termination of pregnancy. The inflammatory process in the fallopian tubes and ovaries provokes green cheesy discharge. Acute vaginal infection is accompanied by abundant cheesy discharge with a greenish tint. If the discharge is insignificant, then a bacterial infection in the genital tract may be developing.

If a pregnant woman discovers foamy, cheesy, yellowish discharge, she must immediately get tested for sexually transmitted diseases.

Often, greenish cheesy discharge begins after taking antibiotics. The appearance of green mucus in the vagina indicates a violation of the microflora in it.

Treatment of white discharge during pregnancy

Transparent or white discharge during pregnancy that has no odor, is not accompanied by unpleasant sensations in the vagina, and does not pose a threat to the health of the expectant mother. All of these discharges are a natural process that does not require treatment. A woman may begin having discharge a few weeks after conception and continue until delivery. At the end of pregnancy, discharge may become more abundant, but this also does not require treatment. Before delivery, it is important for a woman not to confuse discharge with the discharge of the mucus plug (which is of a denser consistency with reddish streaks). Also, abundant discharge may appear due to leakage of amniotic fluid. In any case, any kind of discharge and sensations must be reported to your gynecologist, who will help determine the cause of the discharge.

Bacterial infections that develop in a pregnant woman are quite difficult to treat. First of all, drugs are prescribed to suppress pathogenic flora in the vagina and help restore balance. Immunostimulants, proper nutrition, and walks in the fresh air are also prescribed.

Infections in the genitals must be treated, otherwise negative consequences will affect both the woman and her child. It is quite difficult to treat advanced infections in pregnant women, so at the slightest suspicion of an infectious disease, you must contact a specialist and not self-medicate.

For the treatment of infection in pregnant women, special schemes have been developed that are used at a certain time, only proven drugs that do not provoke complications in the child are used for treatment. Treatment must be carried out under the control of laboratory tests.

Such a common disease as thrush is treated during pregnancy mainly with local medications (creams, ointments, suppositories). Usually doctors prescribe pimafucin in the early stages of pregnancy, but it has a weak effectiveness, so at a later stage thrush can develop with renewed vigor.

In some cases, doctors recommend using traditional medicine to relieve symptoms (a solution of water, iodine and soda, a decoction of oak bark, calendula, etc.).

White discharge during pregnancy bothers almost every woman. First of all, you need to know that discharge that has no smell, is not accompanied by discomfort in the genitals, is a natural reaction of the body to pregnancy (i.e. a change in hormonal levels). If an unpleasant odor appears, discharge with any color (greenish, yellowish, bloody, etc.), you need to urgently consult a doctor to determine the cause of this condition. Timely diagnosis of the disease and effective treatment allows you to avoid a number of unpleasant consequences, both for the woman herself and for the child inside her.
