During pregnancy, changes in hormone levels affect a woman's entire body, and even hair cannot escape the effects of sex hormones.

Typically, by the fourth month of gestation, expectant mothers notice that their hair is growing faster and looks thicker and healthier than before.

But for some, changes in hormonal levels lead to a deterioration in hair condition - increased hair loss, increased dryness or oiliness. And although all these changes are temporary (they will disappear within six months after the birth of the child) and it is impossible to influence hormones, you can take appropriate measures. And hair masks during pregnancy will come to the rescue.

According to experts, the basic recipes for hair masks during pregnancy are no different from the recommendations for non-pregnant women. However, the very first piece of advice for pregnant women is proper nutrition. For example, hair can become dry and brittle due to a lack of protein food, iron deficiency, or iodine deficiency.

Mask for dry hair

The most accessible and simple remedy for dry and brittle hair is an oil hair mask with a light scalp massage. This procedure is carried out no more than once every 7-10 days. In this case, olive or burdock oil (1-2 tablespoons are enough) should be slightly warm, and for the mask to bring maximum benefit, put on a shower cap, and on top - a terry towel (for about half an hour). Moreover, the latter actions are mandatory for any hair mask.

You can add a few drops of lavender, rose, chamomile, lemon, grapefruit or ylang-ylang essential oils to an oil mask for dry hair during pregnancy. But cinnamon, clove, mint, rosemary, juniper, oregano, thyme and sage essential oils are absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy.

Masks for oily hair during pregnancy

For oily hair and increased sebum secretion by the glands located on the scalp, trichologists recommend applying the following hair masks to the hair and scalp at least once a week:

  • from kefir or yogurt;
  • from rye bread soaked in a decoction of nettle or chamomile;
  • from honey and aloe juice (in a ratio of 2:1);
  • from raw egg yolks (to make the mask easier to apply, add a little cold water to one yolk);
  • from slightly beaten egg whites;
  • from crushed and steamed leaves of plantain, birch or oak;
  • from freshly squeezed apple juice and baker's yeast;
  • from crushed rowan berries.

To reduce the oiliness of the scalp, wipe it with aloe juice, lemon (half-and-half with water), red currant, as well as green tea, chamomile infusion or oak bark decoction. And after washing your hair, it is recommended to rinse it with water slightly acidified with fresh lemon juice or natural apple cider vinegar.

Masks against hair loss

Recommended hair loss mask compositions with onions, garlic, hot peppers, mustard powder, vodka or cognac should not be used during pregnancy: hair masks during pregnancy should not irritate the scalp and cause a reflex rush of blood.

You can prepare herbal decoctions and wet the hair roots with them several times to strengthen the follicles. Suitable medicinal plants include nettle, fireweed, horsetail, burdock (roots), dandelion and walnut leaves.

As reviews of hair masks during pregnancy show, when losing hair due to excessive shedding, moistening the hair and scalp with an infusion of oak bark and onion peel helps well. It is prepared at the rate of 3 tablespoons of crushed bark and peel from 4-5 onions per liter of water. The decoction should simmer for at least half an hour, and then infuse under the lid. You need to moisten your hair and skin with a warm decoction, then tie your head for a couple of hours. It is not necessary to wash your hair, and if the smell bothers you, then you will only need regular water and drying naturally (without a hair dryer).

For any hair type, you can prepare hair masks for pregnancy based on this decoction by mixing honey and egg yolks, which are beneficial for hair.
