Hair removal at home

The epilation fashion is a paradoxical phenomenon: on the one hand, many dream of thick, lush hair, if we are talking about the hair on their head, on the other hand, they strive to get rid of hair on other parts of the body, and it does not matter whether this is a procedure in a salon or hair removal at home. The main thing is the result, and for a long time, and if possible, forever.
History is silent about who was the pioneer in the field of hair removal. The ancient Egyptians, Hindus, Greeks and Romans lay claim to this title, especially those who lived in the Middle Ages, when ladies got rid of their eyebrows, and the slightest fluff on the visible parts of noble bodies was considered an unacceptable shame. The English nobility of that time surpassed everyone, following the example of Queen Elizabeth, many of her admirers epilated their foreheads almost to the very back of the head. Obviously, the role of hair, protecting a person from temperature effects, lost its significance quite a long time ago, and from an aesthetic point of view, "hairiness" turned into an undesirable phenomenon. Centuries have passed since then, but the fashion for smooth skin remains, in addition, many new, high-tech methods have appeared that help remove hair, if not forever, then for up to 10 years. Basically, these are salon procedures that require the skills of a cosmetologist, time and financial resources of the client. In addition, the concept of "hair removal" should be divided into two fundamentally different categories - epilation and depilation. Despite the fact that the palm of primacy and the title of "pioneer" in the field of neutralization of vegetation on the body does not belong to the French, the word epilation comes from the French epiler - tweezers. In the cosmetology dictionary, depilation is getting rid of only the superficial hair shaft, and epilation is the removal of hair along with its root, follicular structure. Accordingly, epilation seems more effective and supposedly guarantees a long-term result, but epilating the skin does not mean that the hair will stop growing, this is possible only with the help of modern laser technologies, available only in salon conditions.
Are there any more accessible ways to make skin smooth and clean, like a baby's, known since the time of our grandmothers? It turns out that such recipes have not only survived, but are still extremely popular.
How to remove hair at home? There are more than 50 methods that involve the use of simple devices, special creams, essential oils, acids, plants, medical drugs, food products, and also quite exotic means.

Hair Removal Recipes at Home
There are not just many recipes for hair removal at home, there are a huge number of them today. The list of home hair removal methods includes both ancient "grandmother's" methods, exotic recipes, and fairly modern products such as depilatory cream or wax strips. The general principles of methods for neutralizing hair growth can be divided into 4 categories:
- Physical methods.
- Mechanical methods.
- Chemical agents.
- Laser hair removal.
What home hair removal recipes are the most effective, how to choose the right option? Many women ask this question, in this sense, the huge assortment becomes a problem, not an advantage. In order to decide which method is best to use, let's try to analyze all the pros and cons of the most popular types of hair removal:
Hair Removal Method |
Operating principle |
Pros |
Flaws |
Razor |
Removing the hair shaft, the follicle remains intact and produces new hair growth |
Simplicity, accessibility |
With constant shaving, the hair may become coarser and darker. Unstable result - hair is visible already on the 2-3rd day. There is a risk of ingrown hair. It is not recommended to use shaving in intimate areas (bikini) |
Hair removal cream |
Chemical destruction of the hair shaft |
The procedure does not require much time and is effective in emergency situations when you need to quickly ensure smooth skin. |
Cannot be used for the eyelid area. The result is short-lived - no more than 7 days. An allergic reaction is possible, a preliminary test is required. |
Wax, wax strips |
Wax reduces the activity of the follicle, which is removed along with the shaft. |
The result lasts up to 21 days. With constant use of the method, the hair begins to thin out and stops growing. |
The procedure is accompanied by painful sensations. There are contraindications - diabetes, varicose veins, pregnancy, skin neoplasms (moles, papillomas) |
Epilator for home use |
Removal of hair follicle and shaft by rotating the epilator disc |
Good, lasting results up to 14 days, simplicity and relative safety |
Before the procedure, the skin must be prepared - degreased, steamed. Primary epilation may cause painful sensations |
Sugaring |
Capture and removal of hair follicle, shaft |
Natural, bioavailable composition, good, lasting result up to 3 weeks. Washes off with plain water |
The procedure is painful, takes a lot of time, requires skills. Relative contraindications - diabetes |
Removal with hydrogen peroxide |
Chemical action on the hair shaft, hair becomes thinner, lighter, growth slows down |
Fast, affordable procedure |
Peroxide has a negative effect on dense hair structure, especially dark hair. |
Salon procedures – laser hair removal, photoepilation, ELOS therapy |
Hardware impact on the follicle and hair shaft |
All mixtures, devices, instruments are repeatedly checked for safety, in addition, hair removal in the salon takes 1.5-2 times less time than home hair removal. A lasting, sometimes long-lasting effect |
Each salon procedure has one relative disadvantage – the cost of the course. However, some ladies prefer to entrust the right of hair removal to a specialist, to receive a guarantee of the result and to save such a valuable resource of time. |
Of the more exotic, and sometimes even strange for our enlightened age, methods, the following recipes for hair removal at home are still popular:
- Hair removal with iodine.
- Epilation with lime.
- Use of datura in hair removal.
- Hair removal with ant oil.
- Hair removal with turmeric.
- Hair removal with nuts.
- Epilation with potassium permanganate.
It is obvious that a modern woman will prefer more civilized methods, such as removal with a household appliance - an epilator, cream, wax strips and other proven and truly practical methods. It should be noted that the effectiveness of any recipe is directly related to the degree of "hairiness", that is, the thickness of the hair and the temperature at which the procedure is carried out. Some solutions penetrate the follicle better if there is practically no hair shaft on the skin surface, in addition, warmed, steamed skin, open pores allow the drug to act at a sufficient depth, and therefore achieve a more lasting result.
Hair removal with wax
Bioepilation is several options for neutralizing hair growth using viscous mixtures, and hair removal with wax also falls into this category. Our ancestors used this method, and Eastern women were especially fond of it, since any hair on the body was considered a purely male prerogative. The principle of action is quite simple, although it is accompanied by painful sensations. Centuries have passed, but the composition of the mixtures has remained virtually unchanged. Let's consider the advantages and some disadvantages of hair removal with wax:
- The benefits of waxing:
- The method can be used at home.
- Hair removal with wax is quite fast.
- Waxing, also known as wax epilation, gives lasting results for 2-3 weeks.
- If you have enough courage, waxing can be used for 2-3 years, then the hair can stop growing completely.
- Nuances that can be considered disadvantages, including contraindications:
- It should not be used by those with a history of diabetes, varicose veins, papillomas, or moles on the treated areas of the skin.
- Waxing may cause irritation in women with sensitive skin.
- The procedure is quite painful, not every lady can endure it with honor.
Wax removal is carried out using several types of mixture:
- Warm, soft wax, which is prepared from resins, beeswax itself, and sometimes honey. Soft wax may also contain antiseptic or anesthetic components. This wax opens pores well due to thermal exposure, but its use is more uncomfortable than other types of wax. In addition, soft wax is difficult and slow to dissolve in a liquid medium, so it has to be removed with special products that need to be purchased in salons. At home, it is convenient to use wax strips, which are freely available. A relative disadvantage is the ban on repeating the procedure within 24 hours, respectively, one area of the body will already be smooth, and others will remain with hair. Resourceful women epilate the remaining hair with creams or household devices (epilators, razors, etc.).
- Hot hard wax has its advantages and disadvantages. The basis of hot wax is the resin of coniferous trees, less often - petroleum products. Essential oils are added to the composition, which provide an antimicrobial effect and prevent excessive adhesion of the mixture to the skin. Hot wax is most often used in salon conditions, since the process of heating it requires special thermometers and containers.
How to care for your body after waxing?
First of all, it is necessary to prevent the hair ends from growing into the skin. This can be done with the help of inhibitor mixtures, which not only eliminate the possibility of ingrown hairs, but also slow down the growth of new hair shafts. Scrubs and gentle peels that help the skin to renew itself are also effective.
Hair removal with wax, waxing requires prepared, clean, degreased skin, in addition, a certain type of wax must be applied to each area of the body. Therefore, at home, it is best to use strips for hair removal on the legs. All other areas of the body are best left to cosmetologists, that is, to visit a salon. Professional waxing involves anesthesia of the working areas, post-epilation treatment, which significantly reduces the risk of irritation and various complications.
Hair Removal with Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a well-known antiseptic that helps treat wounds and cuts. There were times when women were dazzling blondes with the help of hydrogen peroxide, today there are other ways to bleach hair on the head. But peroxide is still popular, including in hair removal procedures. A more accurate definition would be "bleaching unwanted hair on the body with peroxide", since peroxide is not able to completely remove the hair shaft. All you need to do is buy a bottle of H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) at the pharmacy, soak a cotton swab or cotton swab for cleaning ears in it and lubricate the area of the body to be treated. The more often the body is treated with peroxide, the faster the hair will lighten, in addition, it will gradually become thin, brittle, and therefore will grow more slowly.
There is a more effective recipe that includes hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, it is suitable for treating large areas, such as legs, which are quite difficult to lubricate with cotton swabs using the point method. You can prepare the composition yourself, its only drawback is the unpleasant specific smell that ammonia gives off:
- 50 ml of hydrogen peroxide.
- 5 drops of ammonia.
- Shaving cream, preferably neutral, without perfume additives, the only exception can be menthol.
- Mix everything in a glass container until smooth.
- Apply with a swab to the scalp and leave for 15-20 minutes.
- Rinse with warm water.
- Repeat the procedure daily for a week.
Hair removal with iodine
This method is quite exotic and radical. Hair removal with iodine is, first of all, a lot of minuses that outweigh a small number of pluses:
- Skin burns are possible, and usually occur in 75% of cases.
- In addition to the fact that hair will be removed, the skin will acquire a specific shade for a long time, therefore, during all the numerous procedures, you need to stay at home and not show yourself to others.
- Iodine often causes allergic reactions.
- You should not experiment with iodine in removing facial hair, there is a very high risk of irritation and even burns.
- Iodine dries out the skin.
To finally dissuade readers of the disadvantages of the inappropriate use of iodine, we offer a brief description. The first concentrated portion of iodine was obtained two centuries ago by the French chemist Courtois. Since then, scientists have found many valuable and useful properties of this chemical element from the halogen group. However, within the framework of the topic under discussion, it should be noted that iodine has an extremely high absorption capacity, its property to quickly concentrate and cause a toxic reaction in case of overdose. Considering that our body already contains a certain amount of iodine, its external use is quite risky. In addition, iodine can cause dermatitis, urticaria and even a specific acne rash - iodism. Such a high degree of risk neutralizes all the small advantages of iodine epilation. Although some daredevils still try this mixture for hair removal:
- 1.5 ml iodine.
- 2 ml of ammonia.
- 30 ml of medical alcohol.
- 5-7 ml castor or other base oil.
- Everything is mixed until the specific color characteristic of iodine is neutralized.
- The mixture is applied to the hair with a tampon twice a day for 10-15 minutes for 2-3 weeks.
Of course, this recipe is good because it does not stain the skin, but the explosive mixture of alcohols raises doubts. Even if the hair stops growing, the skin will most likely be overdried and will have to be treated.
Hair removal with potassium permanganate
Kalii permanganas or potassium permanganate is an effective and simple antiseptic with a powerful oxidizing property. It is this ability that is used in the treatment of all kinds of wounds, burns, potassium permanganate is even used as an antimicrobial agent in agriculture. It would be more accurate to write - was used, since recently potassium permanganate has not been freely available. Firstly, pharmacists have found out that it is not as safe as previously thought, in addition, manganese is very flammable. Even a small crystal that gets into the mucous membrane can cause a serious thermal burn, coming into contact with protein compounds. Therefore, in the process of preparing the mixture below, you need to be very careful and make sure that all the potassium permanganate is completely dissolved.
The recipe, according to fans of this method, is very effective in the bikini area. A quarter teaspoon of potassium permanganate is dissolved in 15 liters of fairly hot water (up to 38-40 degrees). Then you need to try to take a bath with the resulting solution in any way. You should sit in hot water for at least 25 minutes, you will have to repeat the bath procedures every day before going to bed until you get the desired result. The only downsides of this method are obvious: hot baths are not recommended for everyone, it is very difficult to make the necessary concentration without drying out the skin, the skin acquires an unpleasant shade, it is almost impossible to buy potassium permanganate. There is only one conclusion - use more accessible, safe, practical methods of hair removal at home.
Hair removal strips
Wax strips are a disposable device for hair removal at home. The top layer of the strips is covered with a viscous dense material that removes hair, capturing the hair shaft and sometimes the hair follicle. The composition of the strip can be different and intended for different skin types - from normal, combination to sensitive. Often, hair removal strips contain antiseptic components, essential oils, vitamins and moisturizers.
How do wax strips work?
The use of hair removal strips is very simple, all instructions can be read on the packaging. In short, before removal, you need to warm the strip up a little with your hands (between your palms), then apply it to the prepared area of skin and straighten it in the direction of hair growth. The skin should be clean, dry and preferably degreased (wipe with lotion or alcohol). After a certain time, the strip is abruptly torn off in the direction opposite to hair growth. The procedure is quite painful even with repeated use, so some women pre-lubricate the skin with anesthetic. In addition, removal with wax strips does not mean 100% elimination of all hairs, the remaining, surviving rods will have to be pulled out with tweezers. The sticky mixture after tearing off the strip is removed with napkins that are included with the wax product, it can also be removed with any vegetable-based oil. The strips have undeniable advantages - they are easy to use, safe and can be used even by those who have varicose veins. However, in comparison with hair removal with hot wax, the strips are inferior in terms of epilation quality. In short, each woman decides on the choice of means, including the choice of wax strips, among which the following are the most popular:
- Byly Turbo strips are suitable for neutralizing hair in the bikini area. The wax contains green tea and mint extract, which help to relieve pain and reduce the risk of irritation.
- Silium strips containing aloe extract are suitable for almost all areas requiring epilation. In addition, these strips work well and gently on very sensitive skin.
- The extremely popular Veet strips, which remove unwanted hair both delicately and reliably. The only caveat is that this product is not suitable for the face, intimate area and chest.
- Cliven strips are suitable for very sensitive areas of the skin - the face, bikini area. In addition to beeswax, the manufacturers included softening jojoba oil and sweet almond extract in the composition.
Hair removal with ammonia
Ammonia Caustica soluta or ammonia was known to ancient Roman scientists, Arab alchemists, and later ammonia was used as a dye. Since the beginning of the last century, ammonia salts have acquired a new form - alcohol and have come to be used in many areas - from agriculture, pharmacy to military-industrial production. Women know ammonia as an emergency aid for fainting, but most often it is contained in hair dyes. The property of ammonia to destroy the structure of the hair shaft helps coloring pigments penetrate the hair and fix there, this characteristic can be used in another sense - during epilation.
Hair removal remedy with ammonia:
- 1 teaspoon of ammonia (alcohol).
- 1 tablespoon of vodka or medical alcohol.
- 5 drops of iodine.
- 1 teaspoon of grape seed oil (you can use any refined oil or castor oil).
- Mix everything in a dark glass bottle with a lid (shake).
- Wipe the hair growth area with the mixture regularly, preferably twice a day.
Fans of this method claim that after a month the hair becomes thin, brittle, and after 2-3 months it stops growing. Cosmetologists are skeptical about this, since the alcohol base and the action of iodine can have a negative effect on the skin, it becomes overdried and hard.
Hair removal with alcohol
When a woman is interested in how hair removal with alcohol works, she most likely understands that it is not about epilation, but about slowing down the growth of hair shafts and weakening the activity of the hair follicle. All alcohol tinctures are inhibitors of hair growth, therefore, such a product can be prepared independently or purchased at a pharmacy. Alcohol as a mono-product that helps to cope with hair growth is not used for the following reasons:
- Risk of overdrying and degreasing the skin.
- A distant result that no one guarantees. Hair may not grow only during alcohol procedures, as soon as the alcohol rubbing ends, the follicle is restored and produces hair shaft growth.
Plants, substances that slow down hair growth, which can be infused in alcohol:
- Saffron.
- Turmeric.
- Green walnut.
- Partitions of dried mature walnuts.
- Lily and hyacinth bulbs.
- Omega or spotted hemlock (the plant is very poisonous).
- Datura or common thorn apple (poisonous plant).
- Nettle seeds.
- Poppy seeds.
- Euphorbia juice (tincture).
- Pine nut shells.
As for hemlock or datura, it is better to buy ready-made tinctures and handle them very carefully, making sure that the substance does not get into your mouth and eyes. You can make a tincture from nettle seeds or nut partitions yourself. To do this, take 0.5 cups of the active substance and 2 cups of alcohol, which acts as a good preservative and degreasing component. The method of application, hair removal with alcohol, is very simple. After epilation, the treated area of the skin is wiped with tincture twice a day. This must be done regularly, until the hair slows down its growth and weakens. A month-long course of systematic wiping is considered safe, then a break is also taken for a month. The course can be repeated.
Silky skin and hair removal
Silky skin – “silky skin”. This is what many women dream of when searching for the ideal way to remove hair. There are several options for Silky skin products on the modern epilation market:
- Depilatory cream Silky skin.
- Silky skin abrasive pads.
- Silky skin lotion, slowing down hair growth.
- Silky skin roll-on deodorant that destroys micro bacteria, odor and slows down the growth of new hair.
Silky Skin Shaving Gel by Johnson
In general, all these products, despite the fact that they belong to different manufacturers, are united by one common name and purpose - hair removal and prevention of growth. As a method directly related to the epilation procedure, the following products can be mentioned:
- Silky Skin depilatory cream for hair removal. Designed for epilation of the bikini area, legs and armpits. The cream contains thioglycolic acid, which destroys the structure of the hair shaft.
- Silky Skin pads. This is a set of convenient abrasive pads made of plastic and a grinding part. The principle of action is a delicate peeling, which gradually thins the hair shaft. In addition to affecting the hair, the pads perfectly exfoliate the skin, making it smooth and silky. The set includes two convenient holders and 10 discs that can be changed as they wear out. Large discs work with legs, arms, bikini area, small ones - with armpits or face. One set, as supporters of this method claim, is enough for a whole year.
Ipl hair removal
Intensive Pulse Light is translated as intense pulsed light, this is the name of the IPL hair removal process. What does it mean and how does it work?
The IPL method is essentially photoepilation, the history of which began in 1990 in Sweden. Engineer Gustavsson, specializing in medical technology, suggested that dermatologists and cosmetologists use his invention not only for epilation, but also for restoring the structure of the skin. As many as 10 years passed, and only at the beginning of the 21st century did IPL as a technology gain the right to widespread distribution and use. The company that holds the patent has released many devices that operate on the basis of pulsed light exposure; in principle, the concept of IPL unites many types of pulsed epilation, be it photoepilation or laser hair removal. The principle of action is based on damage to the hair follicle, which is destroyed by light pulses. At the same time, the skin remains not only intact and safe, but also heals and rejuvenates.
Is it possible to use the IPL method at home? It turns out that it is possible, although until recently photoepilation was performed only in beauty salons. Since the method is absolutely safe and works with all skin types and types of hair, the manufacturer has released an epilator for home use. With the help of a high-tech IPL device, you can remove from 150 to 180 hairs at once in just a few seconds.
What preparation is required?
- The skin must be clean and dry.
- Before the procedure, you cannot use self-tanner and it is better not to sunbathe at all; IPL technology works more effectively with light skin.
- To achieve results faster, it is better to shave the hair beforehand to “open” the way to the follicle for the impulse.
- What areas can and cannot be worked with? The device is most effective when working with the bikini area, armpits, chest, back, legs. The device is not used to remove hair on the face.
- Is there any irritation, redness of the skin? Minor irritation is possible in women with sensitive light skin, but discomfort and redness pass within 1-2 hours.
- Very rarely, complications such as swelling or puffiness in the area where the device is being used occur. These phenomena are acceptable and disappear within 24 hours.
- After photoepilation, you cannot sunbathe for 2-3 days and it is best not to be in the open sun at all. Before going outside, the skin should be protected with a protective cream with UV protection.
- After epilation, you should not visit the swimming pool to avoid skin irritation from chlorinated water.
- The procedure can be repeated every 2 weeks until the desired result is achieved. If the first epilation was without complications, you can re-treat your hair after 2 days, but it is better to take a break for at least a week.
- After the procedure, the skin should be treated with a moisturizer without alcohol and aromatic fragrances.
- Between photoepilation sessions, you should not do waxing, sugaring or other hair removal procedures, except for using depilatory cream or a razor.
Formic acid for hair removal
Formic or methanoic acid is the basis of formalin, therefore, its effect on hair growth is similar. Formic acid is used not so much for hair removal as for slowing down their growth and as a powerful antiseptic after the epilation procedure. The acid cannot be used in its pure form, it is too aggressive, even poisonous, it is added to an oil base and the so-called ant oil is obtained. The highest concentration of acid is found in eggs, which are collected mainly in Asian countries, where the coveted product is produced. It is unlikely that any of the fair sex would want to look for an anthill on their own, stir it with a special device, then carefully separate the eggs, squeeze them out and generally engage in such a labor-intensive and unsafe process. Therefore, it is best to buy a ready-made product, one bottle is enough for 1.5-2 months.
Regular application of formic acid oil at the first stage leads to an increase in the time between epilations, that is, it prolongs the effectiveness, and then the activity of the follicles is blocked, and the hair shafts simply do not appear, the hair does not grow. Those who have already tried the acid claim that it does not irritate the skin and even makes it smoother and silkier. The product is applied to the area of the skin where the hair was removed, it should be kept for no more than 15 minutes, then washed off. If there is no allergic reaction or other discomfort on the skin, ant oil should be re-applied for 3-4 hours. Some ladies act even more practical, they add 8-10 drops of oil to a basic neutral cream (regular Baby cream is well suited), thus receiving a double or even triple portion of the healing agent. Such a cream acts more delicately, and it can be applied daily.
Hair removal with citric acid
Lemon and lemon juice have long been used in hair removal procedures. First of all, due to the bleaching of the hair shaft and the acid that destroys its structure. Hair removal with citric acid is practically not used nowadays due to the high risk of skin damage. More often, citric acid is a part of inhibitor creams, that is, those that slow down the appearance of new hair after epilation. Nevertheless, recipes and recommendations for using lemon are still found on women's forums and websites. We will not lag behind, but we will immediately stipulate that the methods below are not absolutely safe, after all, acid is an aggressive element that can cause irritation and an allergic reaction.
- A method that many call "French". There is a myth that elegant French women in the last century used lemon slices after shaving their body hair. Lemon juice not only slowed down the growth of new hair shafts, but also suppressed the activity of the follicle. It is said that after 2 months of such rubbing, the hair becomes thinner, and after six months it stops growing completely.
- Hair removal with citric acid and honey. Prepare a mixture of 2 tablespoons of honey and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice. Apply the product to the skin area in the direction of the growing hair with a swab. Leave for 10-15 minutes, rinse with running water. Such procedures should be repeated no more than 2 times a week for 14 days (4 times in total). If there is no result, continue applying the honey-lemon mixture for another 2 weeks. The product can cause an allergy, since both lemon and honey are reaction-provoking components.
- Mixture of flour and lemon juice. Add 2 teaspoons of lemon juice and 1-1.5 tablespoons of flour to 100 ml of purified water. Apply the mixed mixture as an application to washed skin, remove after 15 minutes. The composition is suitable for removing hair above the upper lip, on the legs, but not in the bikini area (irritation may occur)
In addition, lemon juice is an invariable element in the sugar mixture, almost all types of sugaring involve the inclusion of lemon in their composition. Please note that all recipes use citric acid extracted from fresh lemon, that is, juice, and not a dry concentrated mixture.
Hair removal with pumice stone
There is probably no better known method of neutralizing body hair than pumice. It has been used for a long time as a scrubbing, abrasive method, and not only hair was removed, but also keratinized skin, for example, on the heels.
Hair removal with pumice is still quite popular today, although this method is considered aggressive and is not suitable for delicate skin and sensitive areas. The principle of action is simple - the skin and hair are subject to friction, the hair shaft becomes weak, thin, and gradually deteriorates. If the follicle is also weak, then hair growth may stop completely. The pumice hair removal method is used on the legs, and the skin must be moisturized. It is best to rub the legs during bath procedures, when the pores are open, the skin is sufficiently saturated with moisture. Women who practice such an ancient method say that regular procedures for 2-3 months make the hair follicles "freeze". Hair removal with pumice cannot be done daily to avoid irritation and skin damage. Efficiency is achieved not by frequency, but by consistency.
Hair removal with resin
Resin for hair removal is a fairly ancient remedy and method that has remained popular to this day. Hair removal with resin was used by the legendary Cleopatra, who was famous for her soft and smooth skin. In principle, resin epilation is the same waxing, the same principle of action and almost the same level of discomfort in the form of pain. Although hair removal with resin is considered less painful, since the composition pre-opens the pores and more carefully captures the hair follicle.
How to prepare the composition, make resin?
- Honey is needed, which prepares the skin, removes waste and toxins from it and is the base for the resin.
- You need walnuts, preferably ground to a very fine state (crushed). Nut grinding prevents ingrown hairs, gently exfoliates the skin, and its oils penetrate inside and block the work of the follicle.
- You need pine resin, which binds all the components and “catches” unwanted hair.
- All ingredients are taken in equal quantities and mixed.
- The mixture is applied to prepared clean dry skin and left for 2-3 minutes, less often it is necessary to keep it for 5 minutes. It all depends on the hair structure.
- After the required time, the mixture is washed off with warm water.
What are the benefits of hair removal with resin?
- Relatively painless, especially compared to waxing.
- Effectiveness. Hair does not grow for 3-4 weeks.
- Safety due to natural ingredients.
- Availability and possibility of use at home.
Hair removal with honey
Honey was used in hair removal by our ancestors. If earlier the skin was simply rubbed with honey, waiting for the hair to stick together and be pulled out, then modern recipes suggest more gentle methods of influence on the human body.
Hair removal with honey:
- 250 g honey (not liquid consistency).
- Half a glass of lemon juice (not acidic).
- 250 g granulated sugar.
- Mix everything, add lemon juice and heat in a double boiler.
- The mixture must be stirred constantly until the sugar and honey are completely dissolved.
- Cool to a tolerable temperature.
- Apply the resulting mixture in small strips onto clean, dry skin.
- Place strips of fabric on top, smooth out and leave for 5-10 minutes.
- After a while, tear off the fabric strips in the direction of hair growth.
Benefits of removing unwanted hair with honey:
- Natural ingredients.
- Efficiency – hair is removed together with follicles by 70-80%.
- Lasting effect – up to 3 weeks.
- Availability. You can prepare the composition yourself.
Relative disadvantages:
- The procedure is quite painful.
- Allergic reactions to honey or lemon are possible.
- Not all hair is removed; the remaining hair has to be removed using other available methods.
Hair Removal with Lemon
Lemon contains acid, therefore, it is suitable as a means of destroying the hair structure. It should be recognized that acidic action on the hair is considered a rather extreme method, as it can cause both skin irritation and an allergic reaction. Therefore, most often, hair removal with lemon involves using it as a component, and not as a mono-remedy.
Recipe for hair removal using lemon juice:
- 200 grams of sugar.
- 100 ml lemon juice.
- 50 ml castor oil.
- 50 ml of water.
- 5 drops of lavender essential oil.
- Pour lemon juice and water into the sugar, place on low heat, preferably in a double boiler.
- When the sugar has dissolved and turns golden, gradually pour in the castor oil.
- Heat the mixture for another 5 minutes and cool.
- Add essential oil at the end.
- The mixture is applied to clean areas of the skin and removed with a cotton cloth after 5-10 minutes.
- The composition is intended for use for a month, twice a week.
Hair removal with lemon is also called the "French" method, although there is no reliable evidence that French women used it. Legend has it that beautiful Parisians wiped their skin with a fresh, cut lemon every time after epilation. It supposedly helped to prolong the results of epilation and prevent ingrown hairs.
Ammonia for hair removal
Ammonia or ammonia is used as a component in a mixture for hair removal. Ammonia has an aggressive effect on the hair structure, especially in combination with hydrogen peroxide or iodine.
Ammonia Application Recipe #1:
- 1 bottle of hydrogen peroxide.
- 2 ampoules of ammonia.
- 5 ml of alcohol.
- Mix everything and apply with a cotton swab to small areas of skin where unwanted hair grows.

Papain for hair removal
Carica papaya or papain is an active enzyme, hydrolase, which is prepared from the papaya tree. Papain has long been used in cosmetology as a means of eliminating hyperpigmentation, as a delicate exfoliant. Like all enzymes, papain is aggressive when in contact with minerals and calcium, so before using papain for hair removal, you need to test for a possible allergic reaction.
It is believed that all substances containing enzymes or being such, well block hair growth. Papain is really an excellent inhibitor, which is used as a post-epilation agent. The enzyme is able to penetrate deep into the skin, reduce the activity of the hair follicle and disrupt the nutrition of the shaft. Regular treatment of epilated areas leads to a complete cessation of new hair growth, especially if you use papain after bath procedures, when all pores are open. In addition to the inhibitory effect, papain is good for the following properties:
- Soft exfoliating action.
- Skin structure alignment.
- Anti-cellulite effect.
- Reduction in pigmentation intensity.
- Anti-varicose effect.
- Anti-inflammatory effect.
How to prepare the composition?
- 45-50 ml of water.
- Xanthan – 1 gram.
- Papain – 1 gram (dissolve in one drop of water).
- Ascorbic acid – 1 ml (solution).
- Nicotinic acid – 1 ml of solution.
- Calendula or chamomile extract - 5-6 drops.
- Extract, aloe extract - 5 g.
You need to add water to xanthan (guar), you will get a gel-like substance, then dilute all the acids and papain in water. Add the solution of acids and papain to the gel, mix. Apply the mixture immediately after the depilation procedure, but not more than 2 times a week. A slight burning or tingling sensation is acceptable, as well as temporary reddening of the skin. Regular use of the enzyme mixture guarantees prolongation of the epilation result for at least 1 week.
Hair removal with lime
Among the rather unconventional and provocative in every sense recipes there is also one – hair removal with lime. Of course, for the purpose of familiarization we will give a recipe for epilation with quicklime, but we strongly advise you to limit yourself to this, read and try to analyze all the danger of such a sophisticated method of hair removal.
Lime hair removal recipe #1:
- 100 milliliters of milkweed juice (poisonous plant).
- 50 grams of slaked lime.
- 50 grams of crushed aloe leaves or aloe juice.
- Mix everything and leave for about 6 hours.
- Apply to desired areas (except face) and rinse off after 15-20 minutes.
- After the procedure, be sure to moisturize the skin with a neutral cream (baby cream).
Recipe for removing unwanted hair #2:
- 10 grams of quicklime (ground CaO).
- 10 grams of calcium salt of sulfurous acid, or more simply, calcium sulfite.
- 10 grams of potato starch.
- Mix everything, add water until you get a mushy consistency.
- The mixture is applied to the hairy areas.
- After 20-30 minutes, the mixture is removed with warm water.
Let's pay attention to milkweed and calcium sulfite right away. Milkweed is definitely a poisonous plant, to make juice from it, you need to work with gloves, and in general, think carefully whether it is necessary to do this. Calcium sulfate is a food additive from the infamous list of harmful substances E, sulfite goes under the name E 226. There is a standard for using E 226 in the preparation of certain types of products, where calcium sulfite acts as a preservative. Obviously, in the above recipe, it also helps to "preserve" the growth of the hair shaft, while lime aggressively destroys the hair structure. There are a lot of disadvantages from using lime hair removal - overdried skin, irritation, possible allergic reactions, and even dermatitis. Therefore, it is better to use more gentle methods, of which there are plenty today.
Hair Removal Soap
Earlier, during the Middle Ages, women really did use soap to remove hair. And they did it, literally, without sparing their lives, or rather, their skin. The necessary places on the body were generously soaped and exposed to the scorching sun. It is unknown how effective this extreme method was in relation to hair, but one can guess what happened to the skin.
Today, you can also find old recipes on women's forms that suggest using laundry soap, which contains an increased concentration of alkalis. As is known, skin and hair feel normal in a certain acidic environment, and the aggressive effect of alkali contributes to a decrease in the work of the hair follicle and slows down hair growth.
Making the product – soap:
- Grate laundry soap – 1 tablespoon shavings.
- Ash from burnt nut shells (preferably cedar) – 2 tablespoons.
- Mix everything and add 1 tablespoon of very hot water, mix again.
- According to the author offering the recipe, the resulting paste has a very high alkaline environment – up to 10-12 PH.
- The mixture is applied to the areas to be depilated.
- After 10-15 minutes the composition is washed off.
- The procedure is carried out daily, once a day until the hair is visibly weakened.
- The weakened hair is then carefully removed with either tweezers or a depilatory.
In addition to such a sophisticated method, there is a simpler one; recently, Remolan soap has become popular, the composition of which is not disclosed, but the presence of glycosides, alkaloids and flavonoids is indicated. Most likely, such a powerful sedative union "puts to sleep" the hair follicles and reduces the rate of hair growth.
Acrinol for hair removal
Acrinol or rivanol is ethacridine lactate, a disinfectant and wound healing agent. Ethacridine, in addition to its other properties, is capable of coagulating protein structures, which is used in the field of epilation as an antiseptic and inhibitory agent.
Acrinol for hair removal should be used in the form of a 1% solution, other forms of this drug cannot be used. The method of application is very simple - a cotton swab is moistened with acrinol and the desired areas of the skin are lubricated daily until hair growth stops. The procedure should be done only once a day, it is safe, since the product is simply not able to irritate or damage the skin. Allergic reactions are extremely rare, so it is possible to test acrinol on an area of skin that is invisible to the eye. The solution is very effective in removing unwanted hair above the upper lip, on the chin. A relative disadvantage of acrinol can be considered its gradual action, it will not remove hair in one session, as when using a cream or depilatory. However, painlessness, antiseptic and disinfectant properties outweigh the discomfort of waiting for the result.
Some sources contain warnings about external use of Akrinol solution. It is not recommended for use in the presence of kidney diseases, inflammatory processes, in all other cases it is absolutely safe.
Vinegar for hair removal
What do resourceful women not use, solving problems, including hair removal. Vinegar is really used in epilation, but not to neutralize the hair shaft, but after it, as a means of preventing the ingrown roots. Apple cider vinegar is especially effective in this sense, the properties of which were known to the ancient Romans and Egyptians. It was used as a wound-healing agent, added to medicinal drinks and decoctions. Vinegar for hair removal, or rather after epilation, softens the upper layer of the skin well, helps exfoliate dead cells, reduces the activity of the hair follicle, and therefore slows down hair growth. In addition, a product containing vinegar has an antibacterial property, while nourishing the skin due to the content of amino acids, minerals and antioxidants. Ideally, such a phenomenon as ingrown hairs should be absent, but when it comes to home procedures, technological errors are inevitable. Also, each woman has individual, specific features of the structure of hair or skin, so care after epilation is very important. The composition with vinegar can be prepared independently, or you can buy a ready-made product from the professional care series in specialized stores or salons.
How to prepare a remedy against ingrown hairs:
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar.
- 1 tablespoon grape seed oil.
Mix the components with quick rotational movements, it should be noted that it will be difficult to do this, the mixture will be heterogeneous. Apply immediately after the hair removal procedure using an application method, preferably with a cotton swab or cotton pad. Rubbing and rubbing the product is prohibited to avoid unnecessary skin irritation. If you are not allergic to honey, you can prepare another recipe:
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar.
- 1 teaspoon honey.
- 0.5 cups of purified water at room temperature.
Mix everything and apply to skin areas with light movements. Repeat the procedure daily for a week, apply the composition only to clean, preferably moisturized skin.
Some sources offer advice on hair removal, including on the face, using a mixture of sugar, vinegar and brilliant green. The author of this article considers such recommendations not only useless or exotic, but also extremely dangerous from all points of view. Especially in our time, given all the progressive innovations of the 21st century and the basic common sense of our readers. You must agree that there is no need to subject yourself to such stupid experiments when there are many other, safer and painless ways to remove hair.
Hair Removal with Wine Vinegar
Wine vinegar is classified as a natural vinegar and contains flavonoids, aldehydes, and tartaric acid. Due to its composition, it is possible to remove hair with wine vinegar, or rather, to weaken it, and stop the activity of hair shaft development.
Real wine vinegar can be red or white depending on the grape variety. Considering that the natural product is obtained after 10-12 years of aging, it is extremely difficult to find. The vinegar that is sold is most likely fermented wine and contains many undesirable components.
Wine vinegar is used as an element in the composition of hair removal products:
- 1 kilogram of sugar.
- Green stuff (standard bottle).
- Half a glass of water.
- 125 milliliters of wine vinegar.
- Vinegar is added to the water and the liquid is poured into the sugar.
- Cook the mixture over very low heat, stirring constantly until it becomes syrupy.
- Gradually add brilliant green (1/3 of the bottle).
- The cooled syrup is poured into a glass container covered with polyethylene.
- The cooled “clay” is kneaded and applied to the skin in parts.
- After a minute, the clay is torn off in the direction opposite to hair growth.
- This is done on all areas of the body where hair needs to be removed.
An alternative to wine vinegar can be no less useful - apple cider vinegar, which can also be included as a component in a hair growth inhibiting product.
