Why you can not kiss a newborn: dangers and recommendations

A recent TikTok video by British NHS surgeon Dr Karan Raj warning about the dangers of kissing babies has generated thousands of comments, indicating that the information is new to many people.

Why is this dangerous?

A newborn's immune system is immature, and his risk of contracting a serious infection is much higher than that of an adult or older child.

  • Lack of immune cells: Babies in the first three months of life lack immune cells such as neutrophils and monocytes, which help fight infections. This means that infections that cause only mild symptoms in adults can be deadly in a newborn.

  • Herpes virus: In adults, herpes only causes a cold sore on the lips, but in babies it can cause serious consequences. If the virus only affects the skin, mouth, or eyes, it can be treated with antiviral drugs. However, if the virus affects internal organs, it can be fatal, especially in the first four weeks of a baby's life.

  • Bacterial infections:

    • Group B streptococci (GBS): These bacteria can cause sepsis, pneumonia, meningitis, and blood infections in newborns.
    • E. coli: These bacteria are usually harmless in adults, but can cause the same complications in infants.

How to Care Safely

Parents of newborns should not be shy about asking guests to avoid kissing or touching the baby. This is not an excessive precaution, but common sense.

If you are a guest:

  1. Wash your hands: This is the first step to preventing the transmission of infection.
  2. Don't kiss the face or mouth: If you want to show affection, kiss the foot or the back of the head.
  3. Avoid visiting if you are sick: Especially if you suffer from respiratory infections.
  4. Cover herpes sores: Use a bandage or plaster.
  5. Wear a mask: If you feel unwell but a visit is unavoidable, wear a mask and stay away from your child.

Conclusion

Although kissing is a way to express love, it can cause serious illnesses in newborns. Parents have every right to protect their child's health, and guests should respect these boundaries. Remember, it is better to be careful than to risk the baby's health.
