The All-Ukrainian scientific and practical conference was held at Sumy State University, the topic of which was “Infectious diseases in the practice of an internist”.

Scientists and various specialists (therapists, pediatricians, infectious disease specialists, family and preventive medicine doctors) from different regions of Ukraine discussed diagnostic and treatment-and-preventive measures to combat infectious and parasitic diseases, improving the work of the infectious disease service, and exchanged experience and knowledge.

The head of the regional health department, Sergei Butenko, noted that at the moment the epidemiological situation regarding infectious and parasitic diseases in the region is under control and remains stable.

Sumy region has been in second or third place in Ukraine for several years in terms of the number of identified patients, which indicates active work of healthcare and a high diagnostic level.

In 2012, the Antihepatitis program was launched in the region, thanks to which treatment of hepatitis patients is carried out at the expense of budget funds, in addition, the necessary equipment is purchased. Within the framework of the program, a unique device for extrarenal blood purification with the function of an "artificial liver" was purchased, which allows supporting the liver in case of acute failure.

In his report “Modern approaches to the treatment of acute intestinal infections ”, the Chairman of the Association of Infectious Disease Specialists in Sumy Oblast, Nikolai Chemich, presented an algorithm for treating infectious diarrhea and discussed in detail the clinical and epidemiological indications for hospitalization of patients.

In addition, Irina Troitskaya, who is a freelance regional infectious disease specialist, acquainted conference participants with the main pathogens of prolonged fever, voiced the data of her differential diagnostics and presented an algorithm for examining patients using modern methods.

The speech of the student of the Medical University in Sumy Anastasia Lishnevska sounded quite interesting. The girl devoted her report to the depiction of infectious diseases in the works of the great Ukrainian writer Taras Shevchenko. She also made a retrospective analysis of the poems and made the following conclusions: the poet's work was significantly influenced by the mass incidence of infectious diseases. Also, the cholera epidemic of 1846-1860 was quite widespread, while the main anti-epidemiological measures were not carried out well enough, which ultimately led to the mass death of people from this dangerous infectious disease.

During the conference, a number of speakers devoted their speeches to the introduction of modern treatment methods into the practice of an internist, in particular, antibacterial and antiviral drugs, probiotics. Approaches to the diagnosis of infectious diseases that are widespread in the Sumy region were also discussed in detail. Conference participants made proposals to improve the timely diagnosis of infectious diseases, examination and effective treatment of patients. In addition, ten reports were presented separately at the young specialists section.

Following the conference in Sumy, the participants approved a number of recommendations for implementation in medical and preventive institutions in Ukraine.
