Psychologists have provided scientific proof of the benefits of same-sex marriage

The American Psychological Association has called on officials to immediately stop enforcing laws that infringe on the rights of sexual minorities.

In particular, American psychologists are not happy with the situation that has developed around same-sex marriages. At the last meeting of the association in Washington, its members unanimously voted for a resolution calling for the lifting of the ban on marriages between gays and lesbians. At the same time, psychologists emphasize that the ongoing controversy around same-sex marriages only worsens the situation and leads to representatives of sexual minorities feeling even more disadvantaged.

The APA explains its decision to support non-traditional marriages by the fact that the association now has scientific evidence of their benefits for same-sex partners. According to one of the association's leaders, Dr. Clinton Anderson, homosexual marriage carries all the same values and benefits as a traditional union. This conclusion was made based on the latest psychological research, which became possible due to the legalization of same-sex unions in a number of states.

The American Psychological Association is the largest and one of the most influential associations of professional psychologists in the world, with more than 150,000 members from different countries. As USA Today reminds us, the association has supported gays for many years and advocated for the lifting of the ban on same-sex marriages. However, there have been no official resolutions on this matter so far, since the association did not have scientific facts confirming the advisability of marriages between representatives of the same sex.

Currently, six states (plus the District of Columbia) allow same-sex partners to marry in their states. These are Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. This situation does not suit gay activists who lobby for the legalization of same-sex unions at the federal level. Currently, the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman, and thus prohibits gays and lesbians from legally marrying. Due to this same law, same-sex couples who register their union in a state where it is legal do not have the same rights at the federal level that heterosexual couples are granted.
