A list of the most dangerous summer clothes has been compiled
Last reviewed: 01.07.2025
With the arrival of summer, do you want to fit into your favorite dress at any cost? When there is no time for diets, the problem can be disguised rather than solved. Underwear that hides extra pounds on the stomach, jeans that make legs look slimmer, bras that lift the breasts - all these beauty secrets are familiar to every woman.
But are these little tricks really that harmless? What is the danger of shapewear?
Shaping shorts
Risks: stress, heartburn, hyperventilation, incontinence.
How wonderful: put on magic shorts - and immediately a new dress looks beautiful, and no folds are visible... "Slimming shorts are a kind of corsets of the 21st century," say English experts. They are no less harmful. Meanwhile, increased pressure on the lower abdomen leads to increased acid reflux from the stomach into the esophagus, which threatens heartburn. Over time, there is a risk of inflammation.
In addition, shorts artificially support the abdomen and prevent the diaphragm from fully descending during breathing, which causes hyperventilation and a feeling of panic. So if you can’t do without such clothes at a dinner party, at least don’t wear shapewear when you’re flying or on a long trip.
Doctors warn that, for example, irritable bowel syndrome can also manifest and intensify from such clothes. And the miracle shorts also threaten to get into an awkward situation: they reduce the sensitivity of the sphincter of the urethra, which can provoke incontinence during physical activity.
Skinny pants and big buckles
Risks: leg pain, heartburn.
A study published in the Canadian Medical Journal reports that tight pants put pressure on a nerve that runs from the pelvis to the upper thigh. The result is a tingling sensation and numbness. This is a type of neuralgia called "lampas syndrome." Doctors' observations showed that women who began wearing loose pants got rid of these symptoms within a month.
Men who, despite being overweight, try to fit into skinny jeans should be wary of an abdominal hernia, writes the Daily Mail. Dr. Octavio Bessa, a gastroenterologist at Stanford University, notes in his research that 80 percent of his patients suffering from hernias wore trousers that were as much as seven centimeters narrower at the waist than they should be. The doctor warns: a belt or waistband should sit directly above the hips so that the pants do not put pressure on the stomach. By the way, belts with large, heavy buckles also create unnecessary strain on the diaphragm, which can lead to heaviness and pain in the stomach.
The collars are not the right size
Risks: glaucoma, headaches, dizziness, shoulder pain.
Regularly wearing shirts with tight collars threatens inflammation of the blood vessels... of the eyes. Such collars increase pressure on the jugular vein in the neck, which increases the internal pressure in the eye. By the way, this is one of the causes of glaucoma.
Scientists from Cornell University have calculated that 7 out of 10 men buy shirts that are a little tight. This leads to a restriction of blood flow to the brain, and hence – headaches, blurred vision and dizziness, as well as tension in the back and shoulders. It also happens that a favorite shirt that fits in the fall and winter suddenly starts to pinch in the summer. In the summer, body tissues expand. So do not be embarrassed to walk around with the top button unbuttoned – the summer dress code allows this even for meetings.
Narrow shoes
Risks: fungal infections, cramps and numbness of the toes, transverse flat feet.
Bunions are often a “family affair,” but are caused by years of wearing tight, ill-fitting shoes. Hammer toe is another unpleasant medical term that causes cramps in the toes. This deformity occurs when the joint of the foot bends, “wringing” instead of lying flat.
Fungal infections appear on the feet because tight shoes "steam" the feet, making it difficult for air to reach the feet. And heat and moisture, as we know, are the favorite environment for bacteria. And it is generally unnecessary to talk about such "simple" troubles as calluses and blisters.
Tight shoes and tight stockings often cause ankle swelling. Doctors strictly advise against wearing tight shoes for diabetics, which can even cause trophic ulcers on the legs and more serious consequences.
Small underwear
Risks: cystitis, fungal infections, male infertility.
Some people might find thongs sticking out of their jeans sexy, but they certainly don't do any good for your health!
Women's panties of any style, made of synthetic materials that do not allow the skin to breathe, can cause thrush and a number of other unpleasant diseases. The risks of genitourinary infections are especially high in women with low estrogen levels who are going through menopause. Therefore, the skin in intimate areas should receive a normal dose of estrogen and avoid bacteria. Such women are prohibited from wearing tight underwear! - warn gynecologists.
Men should not experiment with tight underwear either – fashionable underwear causes infertility by damaging the testicles. Doctors explain: the testicles hanging in the scrotum should normally be 2.2 degrees colder than body temperature. Tight underwear warms them too much, reducing sperm productivity. Doctors advise couples suffering from infertility to first pay attention to the man’s underwear and switch to loose boxer shorts.
Tight bra
Risks: shoulder pain, breathing problems.
Owners of large breasts know: if you choose the wrong bra size, the weight of the breasts begins to press on the shoulders, and is not distributed evenly. However, the problem of choosing the wrong bra also affects women with small breasts. Have you ever thought that the cause of back pain can be "tricky" gel bras, designed to visually enlarge the breasts? The weight of such bras adds extra pressure to the back.
Push-up bras can restrict movement of the collarbone and upper ribs, leading to breathing problems and muscle pain.
Doctors recommend choosing underwear as carefully as possible so that it fits perfectly.
