Lego is moving to eco-plastic products
Last reviewed: 02.07.2025

For almost a hundred years, the Lego company has been delighting both children and adults with its gaming products. Lego toys are familiar to everyone, as this company has established the production of educational sets for all age categories. Today, the famous brand is entering a new level of development - toys will now be made of environmentally friendly plastic produced on the basis of sugar cane.
The company announced that the first use of environmentally friendly cane plastic has already been established, so the start of sales of eco-constructors is planned for the end of this year. To begin with, manufacturers will make parts with a botanical affiliation from eco-plastic - for example, trees, foliage and shrubs (which is quite indicative).
The company's management guarantees that in terms of physical properties, the new environmentally friendly parts are absolutely not inferior to products made of ordinary plastic - they will be just as strong and practical. The monomer of the new material is ethylene - a derivative of ethyl alcohol obtained as a result of fermentation processes during the processing of sugar cane. Such a material is structurally identical to the well-known polyethylene. It does not decompose and can be recycled. There is another positive aspect: the technological production of the new eco-plastic is accompanied by minimal emissions of greenhouse gases.
As the company promises, by 2030 absolutely all toys and parts, as well as original packaging, will be produced only from environmentally friendly and safe material. The Lego Group has already allocated more than 165 million dollars for research and the creation of strong and reliable bioplastic.
The company's basic production facilities are located in Denmark, Mexico, China and the Czech Republic. The main plant is considered to be the production facility in the Danish city of Billund: it alone produces more than 20 billion plastic cubes annually, for which it is necessary to use at least 60 tons of plastic daily.
According to information from the World Watch Institute, which was provided in 2015, approximately 4% of the total annual use of petroleum products goes to the production of plastic. And the same amount of oil is used to ensure all the necessary processes in production. Of course, plastic is a fairly practical material, and it can be used in many areas: it is not heavy, it is easy to use, and it has a relatively low cost price. Today, almost everything is made of plastic, and not just toys for children, despite the fact that scientists have repeatedly proven the harm of this material - both for health and for nature as a whole.
As Lego representatives claim, they care about people and the environment, so they are not going to save money.
