Gradually increasing exercise and behavioral therapy (changing your perspective on your condition) are the best way to get rid of chronic fatigue syndrome, a study has found. An analysis of 640 people suggests that this is not only an effective but also a relatively inexpensive method.

Scientists still do not know what causes this syndrome. Meanwhile, thousands suffer from it. Some of the most popular theories are viral and infectious (the culprits are the Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, herpes virus type 6, Coxsackie virus, hepatitis C, enterovirus, retrovirus).

The development of the syndrome is also promoted by unbalanced emotional and intellectual loads in the absence of physical activity (stressful work, increased responsibility). Therefore, the syndrome mainly affects residents of megacities.

Symptoms include extreme fatigue, decreased concentration, memory loss, joint and muscle pain, and sleep disturbances. The syndrome forces many people to quit their jobs and hire a caregiver.

A comprehensive approach to treatment allows for significant savings for both the individual and the healthcare system. Professor Paul McCrone comments: "The state definitely needs to invest in the proposed approach."
