The State Environmental Inspectorate estimated the damage from the oil spill off the coast of Odessa at $300,000. This was reported by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
According to the ministry, a total of 914.5 kg of oil products have been collected from the beaches of Odessa Oblast. The culprit of the spill, the Cypriot vessel Baltic Chief 1, has been detained in the Nikolaev port. The captain will have to pay a fine of 23.8 thousand hryvnia for violating the rules of activity in the exclusive economic zone of Ukraine.
Oil has polluted about a kilometer of Ilyichevsk beaches. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
Meanwhile, eyewitnesses claim to have seen oil spills at the 16th station of Bolshoy Fontana in Odessa, near the village of Sauvignon (Chernomorka) and further, all the way to the resort of Karolino-Bugaz.
Employees of the State Environmental Inspectorate of the North-West Region of the Black Sea have identified the culprits of the pollution.
They turned out to be the Russian tanker Orion A and the Cypriot Baltic Chief 1. The leak occurred when fuel oil was being pumped from one vessel to another. Due to a hose malfunction, 5 tons of oil products spilled onto the deck of the Baltic Chief. About 300 liters spilled into the sea. The ship owners will have to pay a fine.
The governor stated that the coast of Odessa region has been completely cleared of oil products and that thanks to the coordinated work of rescue services and volunteers, an environmental disaster was avoided.
At the same time, environmentalists predict serious consequences of pollution.
