The crossbreeding of internet and TV continues

European researchers are exploring new ways to integrate the Internet, social media and television.

The goal of web integration is to unite diverse web applications, social networks and television with a single technology to ensure maximum convenience for users of all types of media and devices.

Scientists have already begun to implement the planned project. It was named NoTube.

According to statistics, a person watches TV and uses a personal computer for about 3.5 hours a day.

The international consortium of digital and television and radio broadcasting companies raised the issue of creating a single platform that would combine television and the Internet.

Experts believe that now is the best time to merge these two formats. For example, the user watches TV, but at the same time can use the web application and control the corresponding processes.

The NoTube principle is based on "linked data". The user's information - such as his contacts on social networks, favorite shows and programs - is stored in an information cloud. The user has access to one or more databases used by the remote application.

"The future is in wireless transmission technology. It will help broadcasters create programs based on consumer interest analysis. This approach will help them find out what viewers want to see most," said Dan Brickley, a researcher at VU University Amsterdam in the Netherlands and one of the lead authors of the project.

During the creation of the unified platform, the capabilities of TV companies were also taken into account.

"TV systems engineers don't have to be geniuses to understand the instructions and recommendations of the engineers involved in the process," Barclay added.

"As the number of TV channels increases, it is not easy for a person to filter out the programs he would really like to watch. We have developed an engine that will solve this problem, it can be deployed on any media platform."

Birkley stresses that all personal data must be protected from annoying advertisers.

"We want to put the user in control," says Brickley. "NoTube will help people decide what to watch and record their preferences."

"Most of our research output and the documents with the positions they present are in the hands of a relatively small group of people with influence in the television industry," the researcher explains. "However, our project has also attracted the attention of the general public."
